About the property

Farmhouse Apartment near Falerone, Le Marche, Italy -f A Fabulous Setting With Easy Access To Ancient Sites And Many Other Pleasure

Self contained private apartment within a charming, secluded, farmhouse setting, within 4 acres of grounds with olive trees, flower gardens, and fish ponds with panoramic views over the Sibillini mountains. This is an almost tourist free agricultural area. To eat and shop in local villages is like stepping back in time with local produce and old fashioned service. The little house is self contained with freedom of the garden, barbeques and pool area. It has a sitting room/kitchen downstairs and double bedroom with en-suite upstairs. Its is well equipped and comfortable. The house lies between the Sibillini National Park and the sandy beaches of the Adriatic with its many fabulous fish restaurants. Both sea and mountains are half an hour drive away.

Nature lovers will also enjoy the wildlife. Badgers, foxes and hares abound also deer, wild boar, martens and my friends the porcupines who have a great taste for flower bulbs. Excellent location for bird lovers, especially birds of prey.

About Pam Getliff

Hi, I have lived here for about 9 years, the house was derelict when I bought it so I have seen a lot of change here. It has been an enormous task but it is so pretty and comfortable now it has all been worth it. Le Marche is such a relaxed and friendly place. Even if you don't speak Italian the people are so kind you never want for help. I live here by myself except for a cat who came from England with me a couple of 'outside' cats. I have 3 grown up children still living in the UK who love to come to visit. I spend quite a bit of time gardening but now that the restoration is all done I am training myself to go to the beach a lot more and to the mountains especially in winter. I have also made a little pottery and hope to get more proficient at that this year.

Why Pam Getliff chose Fermo

We used to come to Italy camping as children, I always loved it, but never thought I would come here to live. When my bank sent a magazine with an article about Le Marche I had to come and look. I had never heard of it and there was not a single town or City with a name I recognised. I was enchanted and bought a house that same week.

Of course the restoration took longer and cost more than I had ever dreamed. I love it here, the countryside, which always seems green even when the weather is hot, the food, always fresh and seasonal, the sea, the mountains but most of all the people

What makes this house unique

Everyone who comes here is delighted, many return. They love the area and especially the house. Although the house is quite small it is comfy and well equipped and they like the fact that the garden is large and there are lots of different places to sit and relax. Mostly they love the tranquility and privacy of the place yet it is not remote. A couple of kilometes give you a choice of bars, shops, restaurants. Not very modern but all the more fun for that.

There is so much going on in the summer, little night markets, parades and competions in the mediaeval style, festas, fireworks, traditional food in the town squares, music and dancing.... but only for those who like it.

Notes on accommodation: Casa Vicino Rita is a quaint and homely little house, an annex to my own farmhouse, but completely self contained. Set in a sheltered hollow it has 4 acres of garden and olive trees and panoramic views. This is virtually a tourist free area agricultural area (mainly olives, sunflowers and corn). To shop in local hilltop villages and eat or drink in the bars and restaurants is like stepping back in time with traditional Marche dishes at at old fashioned prices and helpful and friendly advice. The little house has it's own self contained eating area outside eating area, although guests are welcome to use the whole garden and splash pool. ther is also an outdoor kitchen. It has kitchen/sitting room downstairs and double bedroom with ensuite shower room up. Photographers, painters, readers, writers, walkers, historians, gardeners, gastronomes and dreamers will be happy here. As will shoppers as there are the many factory shops offering world renowned designer shoes, knitwear etc nearby. Outside: Casa Vicino Rita has mature gardens with full grown mulberry, willow, walnut trees and many other ornamental trees. It has olive trees, including some very large, old trees. There are fruiting trees of many kinds including some that may be unfamiliar such as pomegranite, persimon, and mulberry. The old stone well remains and a growing collection of Mediterranean and other plants is thriving. There is a 'wild' natural pond with goldfish etc. and a more formal and well planted carp pool with large carp, lilies and all sorts of wildlife, including tree frogs. From the gardens there are spectacular views of the mountains A decked area with an outdoor kitchen and BBQ provides a secluded sunbathing / relaxing spot and there is also a private breakfast area for guests. There are seats and tables all around the garden so visitors are sure to find a comfy place in sun or shade for relaxing. There is a small (4.5 meter diameter) pool for those who want a cool, refreshing dip. Utility Room: The little house is not equipped with a washing machine but guests are welcome to use the washing machine in the main house. Iron and ironing board are supplied. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All linen and towels are included. Fresh bedding is provided weekly and plenty of towels, including beach towels, are also provided. Cleaning is done at changeover although more frequent cleaning can be arranged at extra cost if required. Other: Casa Vicino Rita used to be the cantina to the main farmhouse. It has been completely restored to its original design with high beamed ceilings, lots of windows and tiled floor. Its character has been retained without compromising comfort.

We loved this little house!

  • 5 of 5

Many years ago when first visiting Le Marche we stumbled onto this lovely little house and were instantly in love.

Meanwhile we've come back five times, never staying anywhere else but here and never being disappointed.

It's hard to pin-point precisely what it makes so wonderful. There is the garden for a start. Sitting there in the evening, with a bottle of wine, gazing at the surrounding hills -

we never get tired of it. And when it gets dark and the fireflies come out, it's just magical. The house itself has everything we need and is comfortable, in a kind of rugged, rural way that we like a lot. The internet works fine - never a given in Italy. It's also ideally located, very quiet, away from the main road, but yet not too far from the surrounding villages for doing a restaurant at night (and there are lot of good ones to choose from: do not forget to consult the house's guest book for suggestions and discoveries made by previous visitors, including our own :-) ). A large part of it is certainly also the welcome we received from Pam, the owner (and from Cato, Pam's cat, who came from the UK and now is a mild-tempered local king of the hill, keeping his Italian cousins in check). She's a wonderful warm person, full of stories about the region - if you like hearing those (we do!).

We read about another visitor complaining about the mosquitos. There are some, varying from year to year, but not more than you'd expect in a country house, and no more than we have at home, in a Belgian city. About the wood stove, yes you can tell it's being used, perhaps a bit more intensely the last year, but it has never actually bothered us. We're also sure that if you just ask, the owner will go out of her way to help you with any issue you may have.

As to us, we will definitely be coming back for a sixth time!

See you soon!

We were really surprised to read the review from Paula K. My wife and I have visited Marche yearly for the last 6 or 7 years (sometimes 2 or 3 times a year) and we always stay in the Little House and we have always found it to be clean and tidy. The owner is so kind and nothing is too much trouble – if you need anything at all you just need to ask and she will arrange it for you – from a change of linen to local olive oil to recommending the best ice cream or booking a table at one of the great local restaurants.

The wood burner is an ideal way to warm the house. You can smell it, but it is just the usual smell you would expect from a wood fire and we liked it very much – it will be a particular memory of our stays, and no doubt every time we smell a wood fire in future we will think of Marche.

It is horrible to be bothered by mosquitos, but the little house is in the middle of the Italian countryside so it should perhaps not be too much of a surprise that there may sometimes be insects to cope with (and one of the up sides of the location is that during our visits we have also encountered porcupines and wild boar, and had lessons in how to find wild asparagus). In any case, although I understand that this summer has been particularly bad for mosquitos throughout Marche, I can say in all honesty that we have never been particularly bothered by them when staying at the Little House, although it is always best to be prepared – in our experience from visits elsewhere some citronella candles are often enough to deal with the problem.

We are already missing the little house and planning our next visit.

The equipment in the house was very basic (kitchen etc) - no spare towels or bed linen and had an aroma of an old kipper smoke house (from the wood burner which had not been cleaned - hence all of our clothing took on the aroma) ! The house needed a thorough clean. We had booked for 7 days but left after 3 days as we were eaten alive by mosquitoes who thrived in the gardens surrounding the property. The positives are: the bed was comfortable, the views are stunning and we did see some fire flies - but we paid the price in mosquito bites!

Owner's Response: These guests told me, on arrival, that they both had severe reactions to mosquito bites and had had to curtail a holiday in Pompeii for this reason. I did my best to make them comfortable providing them with insect repellent, cream, fragrant candles, spray, plug ins, fans etc. but despite that they were, unfortunately, still troubled. It is hard to know what else I could have done. This is a rural location, the accommodation comfortable and pretty but simple. The pictures and descriptions in the Owners Direct site are accurate. The guests are provided with 3 towels each on arrival, and more are provided if requested. The beds are all made up, with an extra cover in case guests feel chilly. The kitchen has all the equipment described and sufficient crockery, cutlery etc for 4. It’s a pity about the wood stove, guests usually love it. I am always available and willing to meet the guests’ requests. Many come regularly. I am very sorry that these guests were not happy, but other than the problem with the mosquitoes, which I did my best to solve, they made no complaint or request.
