Overview

About the property

A truly privileged location perfect for nature lovers, birdwatching and walking

Surrounded by a private patio garden, our stone 'casita' is a charming self catering cottage for two in a idyllic rural setting. The modest stone construction that was formely used for wine making has been restored with vintage finds and rustic detail and has an "away from it all" feeling. The limited indoor space has been used sensitively has been simply but tastefully decorated, and has everything you need for a truly comfortable stay. The fantastic wood burner ensures cosy nights in winter and early spring. The patio offers a fantastic panoramic view of the Sierra de Gredos mountains and the fertile Tietar valley below. Meals can be enjoyed on a large table under the wisteria and grapevine with the amazing gredos mountain peaks in permanent view. There are also very comfortable sunloungers for easy reading, reflecting and recharging. You can also choose to explore this surprisingly lush area of Extremadura, with wonderful oak and chesnut forests and amazing river pools. Lovely circular walks can be done right from the cottage or use this location as a base from which to explore the charming villages of our valley, the amazing Monfragüe Natural Park or to visit the Heritage cities of Plasencia or Trujillo.

The view's great; the cottage, not so much

  • 2 of 5

Yes, the view is lovely. But the cottage leaves a lot to be desired.

There's not a single comfortable surface to relax on: the lounge chairs outside are really hard & uncomfortable, with barely an inch of padding. And the mattress was awful; after a few nights our backs really hurt. The rest of the cottage is so crammed full of stuff that there's very little room for your own things, which end up all over the couch.

The bath has one of those shower attachments that you have to hold over yourself with one hand while you try to get clean with the other. And the kitchen is fairly cramped; you can make a proper meal, but it's not easy. This is more important than you'd think, because access to the cottage is difficult: it's only a couple of kms. from the main road, but it takes almost 15 minutes to get there, because the road is so narrow, rocky, and deeply rutted that, unless you have an SUV, you can't go faster than ~10 km/hr. Once we returned to clean up after the day's adventures, we found ourselves reluctant to face that drive again to go out for dinner.

Also, the cottage really needs a good cleaning: it's evidently been years since it's received anything but the most superficial attention. The outdoor table, where you'd really like to eat, was filthy and covered with bird droppings; we scrubbed it for 40 mins. before we were comfortable putting the cutlery on it.

You can't even count on peace & quiet; though you're miles from anywhere, there's a neighbor just on the other side of the patio wall. You may return from an excursion hoping to relax, but if he decides to fire up a weed-whacker right then (it happened several times), you aren't going to. And the cats he lets roam loose mean you aren't going to see any birds close up, either.

The owner did our washing, as advertised, returning it wet for us to hang up (no problem) in a basket so filthy it left big brown smudges on every item that touched it, which then had to be spot-cleaned all over again.

The area's beautiful, and there are several nearby hikes that are delightful. It's too bad that — what with the uncomfortable furniture, the iffy plumbing, the dirt & disorder, and the noisy neighbor — you can't relax when you return.

Owner's Response: Dear Anthony H, It is very clear that regretfully your expectations were not met so we are taking this opportunity to review and complement the style and features description of our property so as to inform future guests more successfully and will work on many of the things you felt needed attention. We are aware that living styles vary and what seems charming and homely to us might seem impractical, cluttered and unnecessary to others but, it is very important for us, that all our guests are not disappointed and rent the type of property that suits them best. Regarding noise from our neighbors we have never before in all the years that we have been renting had any complaints at all but will certainly remain attentive to your particular experience. It is true that our track can be challenging. In Extremadura, a vast and largely rural area, most properties like ours set in amazing natural locations are bound to have some sections of non tarmac road. We are often assured that this is expected and that our privileged location and wonderful view more than compensates for this. We will make sure to reinforce the description of access that already exists. Opportunely some sections have been resurfaced since your stay. I am happy to know that you enjoyed the nature, walks and stunning view that makes our property so unique and special. Thank you for helping us improve.

Tranquility at De La Cava

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the casita De La Cava was very enjoyable.

The hosts, Emma and Cesar, are close at hand, but left us to make ourselves at home in the comfortable, well-equipped stone cottage.

Their dog, Mia, greeted us at our front door most mornings, and she loved to accompany us on our long walks along the lanes and the little river and through the woodland that surrounds the cottage.

The view of the Gredos mountains from the vine-covered patio provides peaceful entertainment as the lights and shadows change throughout the day. The small orchard attracts a variety of birds and the figs are yummy!

Villanueva de la Vera is a charming village with a good selection of bars and restaurants with friendly staff.

The main road gives access to several other local villages nestled in the foothills of the Gredos range, and there are many interesting and historic towns within a two-hour drive.

Our holiday was a great get-away break.

Charming and quaint while providing all the requisite amenities

  • 5 of 5

A wonderfully unique holiday experience. The view from the terrace where we ate our meals was positively stunning. Emma and Cesar were warm, friendly and informative without being intrusive. Delacava is the perfect place to find peace and tranquility. We absolutely loved it and would certainly recommend it.

The perfect get away!

  • 5 of 5

Our week at DeLaCava exceeded our expectations! The wonderful views of mountains and countryside is the perfect escape from city life, and nestled in the perfect location, the cottage offers everything you need for a relaxing holiday. The surrounding area is perfect for hiking! You can follow trails up the mountains to find beautiful clear water pools, or you can find similar pools in Villanueva de la Vera. If you like the outdoors then this is definitely for you! Thank you Emma and Cesar for everything, we hope to come back soon!

A terrace with a view - a cottage with charm

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week this August (2016), whilst Emma & Cesar were doing a house-swap in the UK. You take a punt on these things -- booking a cottage online in a part of Spain you've never been to! -- but De la Cava exceeded all expectations. It was a lovely spot to enjoy the best that the La Vera region, in northern Extremadura, has to offer. And there is plenty to see and experience: great hiking in the Sierra de Gredos, pottering about medieval mountain villages, lazing on the lovely terrace with a glass of iced Vermouth with Mia the dog as company, and plunging into rock pools near the wild-west-named village of El Raso. One piece of advice: it's best not to rent a small car - the bumpy 2-3km track leading up to the property is not for economy models (as we found out). The old cottage is quite small but it has everything you'd need. And the pottery, made by the owners, is fabulous! We loved our stay there.
