About Ness

My name is Ness I have lived in Spain since 1970 raising two sons in Menorca where we lived for 15 years. My last husband was an Olympic skier back in the '60s so our winters were spent in the mountains. At first in the Pyrenees and since 1996 (when Sierra Nevada hosted the World Championships) in Sierra Nevada. Unfortunately he died in 2006 and since then I spend less time on the ski slopes preferring life on the farm in warmer climes on the southern slopes of the Sierra in a beautiful region known as the Alpujarra. So when I or the family are not using the place I am able to share our lovely duplex with others on a holiday rental basis. I also spend time in my pretty little place down on the coast with wonderful sea views & ideal for that quiet beach holiday with a very Spanish flavour.

Why Ness chose Monachil

My husband who sadly died in 2006 was an Olympic Skier and skied for Spain in two Olympics in Grenoble and Sant Moritz back in the '60's! His life was devoted to the mountains.

I still live in Sierra Nevada but on the warmer southern slopes though I still love to ski when I can!

What makes this apartment unique

Once there noticed a sewage smell from the downstairs bathroom. Notified the owner who said it was a known problem. Kept the door shut the rest of the stay and used the upstairs bathroom only. Upstairs 4 twin beds but neither me or my boy slept well on the mattresses. Wound up using the pull out couch mattress but then discovered no sheets for it. Hotel was accommodating with wi fi and shuttle service. Didn't ski in ski out as we are snowboarders and it's a long walk on a flat road ski run to get back to the hotel. We wound up using the chair lift down in the mornings. Would prefer a mid or lower level location next time as it was a hassle to go to dinner in the village in the evenings. Used the spa 27 euros one day at the hotel but the Jacuzzi was warm not hot. The attendant informed me it was normal for that time of day. I wouldn't rate the hotel more than 3 stars as the elevator was out for a day and we were on the 4th floor. Plus the dinner buffet was ok 50 euros, not anything super. There is a nice area lobby level for the kids to play pool and hang out which was nice. Plus we had a parking spot in the garage. And the hot water in the shower was much hotter than the spa. Kitchen was small and wished there was a microwave instead of convection oven. My recommendation- fix the bathroom smell, get better furniture with bigger tv, buy better mattresses, put an electric fireplace in the existing non used fireplace, put in a microwave with toaster, update the artwork and pictures and you'll have a much more desired rental.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your very detailed & lengthy input. As I explainedI have raised countless complaints with the hotel regarding their plumbing problem & I apologise again for the intermittent smell. Did you mention it in reception? I haven’t ever received any complaints regarding the beds so maybe this down to cultural differences US v EU maybe? I have always thought one could sleep 4 in a twin room Stateside! So ours must seem awfully tiny!! Anyway I’m very sorry you found everything so generally below par. My guests are generally so delighted it’s very disappointing & a bit bewildering!

Car: recommended

Sierra Nevada is one of the few ski resorts where you can ski in the morning and lunch on the beach! The Costa Tropical awaits just half an hour from Granada.

The airport of Malaga is about an 1.30 hours drive from the ski area in Sierra Nevada. Getting up the mountain by public transport is complicated. Car hire is recommended although taxi is another option.

The fabulous city of Granada and the famous Alhambra Palace are only 30 minutes down the mountain. You are advised to prebook tickets to the Alhambra to avoid disappointment. The city offers a very cosmopolitan atmosphere with great shopping in the Moorish quarter. Flamenco and 'doing the tapateo' are popular with both locals and visitors. The tapa (titbit) is still served free with every alcoholic drink in this city!
