Overview

About the property

Villa in Vega de San Mateo, Gran Canaria - La Casa del Moral

A traditional house that has been carefully restored is always a pleasure to find and thus it was with delight that we wandered through the welcoming rooms of this charming rural retreat. The interior is a perfect blend of old and new. Traditional carved furniture of heavy wood sits atop terracotta tiles in the cosy sitting room, a pretty kitchen, curtained with colourful fabrics is adorned with local pottery, whilst in the immaculate bathrooms thoughtfully chosen ceramics decorate tap handles and walls alike. Standing high on the slopes of a south-facing hillside, on the edge of the local village of Solana de Utiaca, this privileged situation combines a picturesque panorama of mountains with proximity to amenities. Built in 1850 and carefully refurbished in 2001, the stone, terracotta and wood building has a floor area of 200 m² with modern facilities in a charming atmosphere. This villa has a private pool (6,5 x 4 mt) with a panoramic view to the mountainous landscape.

From the house, a narrow footpath winds its way up to the parking area and the village above of Solana de Utiaca. Within walking distance, this small village has a grocery store, although for a greater selection of amenities Santa Brígida and the market town of Vega de San Mateo is a 15-minute drive.

The city of Las Palmas and so the coastline is only at 20km. Within 30 minutes drive, a great variety of beaches can be reached, all of them away from mass tourism. Melenara, Las Canteras or San Andrés give you the opportunity to spend the day in the beach in a family mood with the local people. Then, with the sunset, you may enjoy a dinner of fresh fish at any of the inexpensive restaurants around the area.

The Real Club de Golf the Las Palmas is within 15-minute drive of the villa next to the stunning Caldera de Bandama, a 200-meter-deep volcanic crater, on whose peak you will find an observation platform that affords you a scenic vista of the island. Kill two birds with one stone!

Heaven in the mountains!

  • 5 of 5

A family party of 6, aged 15 to 80 spent a week here and returned feeling very relaxed. The villa is gorgeous and the pool amazing! As we had elderly members in our party we only spend a day away from the villa as the access was not easy for them. We had hired a 9 seater minivan and in hindsight would have been better with two smaller cars. The 4 younger ones travelled down to Aqualand which was a fun family day out!

Owner's Response: Dear Julia, Thank you so much for writing such a nice review. I think you have a good point on hiring two small cars rather than one big one also because you double the chance of having at least one of the drivers doing it. Generally speaking I always recommend small cars for the mountains with a good motor, just like my Yaris. I could not live without it! Thank you again and hope to see you soon. Best regards, Beatriz

Superb

  • 5 of 5

What can one say that hasn't been said before ? The property is great and the views fantastic. Stayed for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it, just wish that we were more nimble on our feet to walk around more. Beatriz is a great owner and yes she also carried our suitcases from the car park down to the villa as the drive is not for the faint hearted. Would not hesitate to return..

Owner's Response: Dear Brian, You are very kind with me. I just wish I could change the road myself to make it easier for all the guests. Please return soon. Best wishes, Beatriz

An amazing place to stay...

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in this idyllic villa - we were very lucky with the weather so were able to take full advantage of all the different sitting areas, outside and in and the (very cold!!) pool.

The views from the villa are stunning and the birdlife very varied. The villa itself is very well stocked with initial food supplies and equipment and was exceptionally clean. Beatriz made us feel very welcome when we first arrived and helped us with the infamous road. Having driven down it once we decided to park at the top for the rest of the week and use the path. We had seen people's comments about the road and it is scary but we were well warned...the rest of the villa more than makes up for it. Would highly recommend this property..

High in the hills

  • 3 of 5

Lovely house in a beautiful setting but not easy to get to. Exceptionally attentive host who responded to our every need.

Unfortunately the weather was too cold to stay at the house during the day time and make full use of the facilities.

Everyday we made the dash down and south to the sun.

Owner's Response: Dear Mike, Thank you so much for writing this nice review. I am sorry that the weather was not so good this time. As I always say, that is a matter of chance and today it is nice but tomorrow who knows. The plants though are very happy to have some water from time to time so that is a positive side. I am sure next time we will be more lucky and you will be able to fully enjoy the house every single day! Looking forward to meeting you soon agin. Beatriz

Rural Retreat

  • 4 of 5

A lovely rural property with panoramic mountain views. Great sense of history and tradition. Although only two of us there was plenty of space for 6 people. The property is well equipped, clean and maintained to a good standard. The garden is terraced overlooking a ravine, with plenty of seating areas at different levels. We enjoyed picking oranges and lemons from the garden in December.

The house sits below a very steep cliff and access to the property by road or path Is difficult. Both have very steep gradients. The owner, Beatriz will take your luggage down by road whilst giving you the opportunity to learn how best to manoeuvre the car around the tight bends. We chose to leave our car in the car park at the top and use the steep path to access the property.

There are 2 small shops in the village that sell essentials food items fresh bread, fruit and vegetables.

Beatriz was very helpful, easily contactable and speaks very good English.

Despite the access issues we would stay again and highly recommend as a peaceful and tranquil alternative to beach accommodation.

Wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We rented this villa for a week in November, and although the weather was not the greatest, we had a truly wonderful stay.

The villa is full of character - at least as lovely as in the photos - and very spacious, which makes it excellent for groups/families as there are 3 double bedrooms, all with ensuite bathroom, and various living areas both inside and outside, so you won't feel crowded. Also the fireplace is a great feature during cooler evenings.

The location turned out to be very convenient. It feels remote, but towns of Santa Brigida and San Mateo are only short drive away, and thanks to the motorway, the city of Las Palmas is less than half an hour drive. It is also a good base for many scenic drives - I would recommend trips to Teror, and especially route Pico de las Nieves-Roque Nublo-Tejeda!

Beatriz responds all queries promptly, and her driving instructions from the airport are excellent. As long as you follow them, and ignore your satnav, you will find the place without a problem.

In short: highly recommended!
