Gite with Pool (usually sole use), unique Garden Room & Air Conditioned Bedroom

Overview

Property

Updated: 10-Dec-2016
Gite near Gironde Estuary, Charente Maritime, France - 10 mins from Mirambeau & Estuary

La Vieille Grange is different in many ways, in offering the best of all worlds in its facilities, its location and in the atmosphere the owners strive to create.

It is gite accommodation with a difference - ideal for couples and year round holidays - with pool, log fires, an acre of garden, views across the valley and a unique “weatherproof” garden room/terrace. Quality assured : up to 50% returning guests !

A quality conversion of an old wine producing barn the gite offers privacy, relaxation, views, a large 4x6m all-weather and all-year heated garden room/terrace, an acre of garden, an 11x5m swimming pool (with diving board at deep end) and all mod cons internally, but at a value-for-money price.

Located in Charente Maritime, surrounded by vineyards and rolling countryside but within 10 minutes of the Gironde estuary and quiet marinas, it is within 30 minutes of a nice beach with lots of lovely local places to visit and with easy access to the life of Bordeaux, La Rochelle, St.Emilion and Cognac.

The gite is specifically designed as spacious (95 m2) self catering holiday accommodation for couples (or 2 friends!) and the owners Martin and Christopher take pride in welcoming and respecting the diversity of their guests, regardless of background.

Updated every year, the gite consists of :

On ground floor :

Kitchen/dining room : modern and fully equipped incl full sized oven & ceramic hob, breakfast bar, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge/freezer, microwave, dining table/chairs and direct dial telephone/answering machine

Living room : with Godin log burner, TV/video with English (BBC, ITV, Film4 etc) & French channels, DVD player, CD/radio/cassette player & sofa (a sofa-bed can be provided for people not able to get up the stairs, subject to availability)

Bathroom : bath with wall mounted shower attachment

Separate WC

Entrance hall, with spiral staircase up to :

On 1st floor, in the converted grenier/loft, 2 large bedrooms (each approx 6mx3m / 18ftx9ft into the eaves - although with some low beams) :

Main double bedroom for 2 people, incl. sitting area with sofa and aircon ... and French windows with views across countryside towards the estuary (and the sunsets !).

Mezzanine double bedroom for additional 2 people, leading to main bedroom

and outside :

An enormous (6x4 metre) all weather & all year round garden room/terrace with triple sliding patio doors, opening onto pool area and stunning views across garden and valley beyond

If/when you need heating in the garden room, there is a log burner if you just want a quick bit of added warmth there is a stylish infra-red gas radiator

So if it's a bit drizzly you can still relax and enjoy a good book (or an even better bottle of wine !) whilst enjoying the "being in the garden" feeling and gazing at the views across garden and valley to the village beyond !

And when it stops drizzling and warms up - just open up as much or as little of the patio doors as you want - opening up as much as 2/3rds of the room to the garden.

With a choice of furniture : easy chairs; wood steamer-style chairs or deckchairs. Plus dining table & chairs, coffee table and side tables.

Plenty of choice of garden furniture (wood or PVC sun-loungers, chairs, tables & parasols), plus BBQ and 2 bikes

Use of 11mx5m swimming pool - May to October incl. The pool is approx 1m in the shallow end and approx 2m at the deep end, with a diving board *

Garden - approx 1 acre - incl boules pit and picnic area with 2nd BBQ

with pool and garden shared only with the owners and from time to time their guests.

Yours is the only gite, and normally you will have the pool entirely to yourselves !

Sorry but the gite isn't suitable for children under 13. We're happy to consider one small, well behaved dog.

and not forgetting the ever popular "finishing touches" :

With your confirmation letter, you'll get our colour information booklet - with everything from our favourite places to eat and drink, to the all important opening times of local supermarkets - and of course maps and directions for getting to us !

and waiting for you when you arrive :

fresh flowers to gladden the eye

our complimentary "Post Travelling Recovery Kit" otherwise known as our "Welcome Pack", including a bottle of wine (for you to celebrate the start of your holiday !) and provisions for an evening snack and morning breakfast - so you don't need to go to a supermarket after travelling ! (Pack includes : bottle of wine, olives, bread, croissants, milk, cheese, orange juice, tea, coffee, sugar, margarine, pasta & pesto sauce)

an abundance of up to date tourist maps, guides and leaflets - carefully organised to make it easy to find just what you want (yes, Chris IS that sad !)

availability of an extensive DVD library (to accompany that late night bottle of wine perhaps ?)

Wi-fi coverage is provided on request (subject to availability**) if you bring a wi-fi enabled laptop.

the gite Information Folder with details of everything from the latest weather forecast, times of local markets, list of DVDs/videos available to borrow and information about how to use all the gite's facilities - from the dishwasher to the underwater swimming pool floodlights !

Whilst the gite is attached to Chris and Martin's house, it is completely self contained and the terrace is divided to provide privacy. Your privacy is assured : in the words of previous guests : "Chris and Martin ... manage that delicate task (so easily !) of being unobtrusive & yet so friendly. We shall return ..."

The gite is well equipped with heating for the cooler months, with a Godin log burner in the living room and wall mounted electric radiators and convector heaters in all other rooms - including modern "chaleur douce" radiators for gentle and controllable background warmth

We're ashamed to say that some of the internal doors, even on the ground floor, are too narrow for wheelchairs to get through. Otherwise, the ground floor facilities are quite accessible for people with mobility difficulties.

For people with hearing disabilities, sub-titles can be provided on the TV (dependent on specific programmes) upon request, and many DVDs in the library have sub-titles available.

Guestbook comments from the owner

'A beautiful gite in such tranquil & peaceful surroundings. We've had an excellent 2 weeks here, enhanced by the weather and by Chris and Martin who manage that delicate task (so easily!) of being unobtrusive & so friendly. We shall return ...'

'We particularly loved : the accommodation and absolutely pristine facilities the view, the garden, the sunset, the birdsong and our wonderful hosts'

'So much to do in Charente-Maritime and we saw so little! The attractions of the gite were rather too much. The gorgeous weather poolside, the swallows dipping over the water, the buzzard wheeling over the valley, the amazing illuminating church (!) and the peace and quiet '

Fab place to stay

  • 4 of 5

From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome by Martin and Chris. There was a 'welcome pack' waiting for us with everything we needed to get us started and even a vase full of tulips, (from their beautiful garden I assume)!

The garden room, with its perfect view of the pool, garden and village beyond, is a lovely place to spend some time.

The gite is in a very good location to explore the gems of the area including La Rochelle, Bordeaux, all the small villages along the estuary and much more.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in May/June and wouldn't hesitate to return to stay at the gite if we decide to visit Mirambeau in the future.

Thanks again Martin and Chris for a wonderful holiday.

Perfect for peace & tranquility

  • 5 of 5

Martin & Chris are wonderful hosts, they have succeeded in offering a beautiful property with everything you could think of provided except for your own clothes! The Gite and gardens are immaculate and the welcome hamper has never been beaten anywhere else. The location is great for exploring either inland or coastal (estuary) on very quiet French roads a pleasure for de-stressing. Great if you enjoy log burners, in both garden room & the lounge. A very well equipped kitchen so that you can really self cater if you wish. The bedrooms are accessed by a small spiral staircase from the hall, just have to remember to mind your head on the beams upstairs. Definitely a property to return to at some point in the future. Well done for sharing your special place with others.

One of the nicest Gites we have stayed in.

  • 5 of 5

A lovely, clean, quiet and spacious Gite, fully equipped and with helpful, friendly owners in Chris and Martin.

The Gite also boasted one of the cleanest pools we have seen in over 25 years of holidaying in France.

The Gite was off the beaten track which meant it was quiet and peaceful, but equally it was only 10 mins from a Super U Supermarket that was able to supply all our needs for 2 weeks holiday.

Convenient for Bordeaux, the Gironde estuary and the lovely town of Sainte, the Gite could not be better situated- The best of both worlds!

We would most certainly recommend it.

This is a small piece of heaven on earth

  • 5 of 5

This property is everything that it says and more. The gite, garden and pool offer a wonderful relaxing space. Chris and Martin were wonderful hosts offering lots of advice, suggesting great places to dine and explore. The welcome pack on arrival was super. On a final note, this review would not be complete without mentioning Keanu a special little dachshund who made our stay very special. We will return.

La Veille Grange

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful two weeks at this lovely gite. Spacious accommodation, beautiful grounds and a magnificent pool. Everything looked just as in the pictures on the website. Chris, Martin and Keanu were really helpful and informative hosts and very accommodating of our dog, Huck. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and there are so many fantastic places to visit that we could not cover them all in the fortnight. So we are definitely looking forward to a return visit.

Even Better than Expected

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Vieille Grange - loved our stay so much we have already booked for next year. Although intended for two, the property is much bigger than we anticipated especially the garden room/terrace which we loved and in which we spent a great deal of time, perfecting the art of doing nothing in particular and simply relaxing!

From the moment we arrived and were shown round, we knew we had picked a winner! Martin and Chris provided a welcome pack of food and wine kindly customised to our likes/dislikes so we were able to make an evening meal and breakfast without venturing out. There were also some fresh flowers - a lovely touch. They were perfect hosts - thanks to both! We very much enjoyed meeting you and appreciated your input and help.

We spent 12 nights there and because of the space, the high standard of cleanliness, equipment, furniture and furnishings, the TV (UK satellite), wifi, its own landline and the books, DVDs and local information we felt we were actually LIVING in France rather than just passing through! We only wish we had the courage to do what Martin and Chris have done and move to France.

We loved the pool which we had to ourselves so were able to splash away happily in private. The pretty, well-maintained grounds have various types of outdoor chairs to sit in or lounge in while enjoying views of the garden and the countryside - accompanied by the odd glass of wine.

There are lots of interesting places locally to potter around without having to travel very far. The owners provide plenty of brochures, books and information to give a flavour of what there is in the area. We usually rush around on holiday but somehow as it was so peaceful and private here we just whiled away the hours doing nothing in particular. Did us good! We did explore several local towns and villages, had a boat trip on the river and crossed by ferry to tour the Medoc vineyards.

Although there are no shops in the immediate area, Mirambeau, only a few kilometres away, has several shops including bakeries, pharmacy, post office, newsagents and a well-stocked supermarket with petrol - so all needs covered.

Was there anything not to like? Well, perhaps we did miss having an upstairs bathroom. Did that put us off? No, we have already booked for 2014. Oh, and the weather was wet and thundery for several days, but that was outside their control! And even then we were still able to enjoy views from the garden room!

Owner's Response: Dear Michael. Many thanks for your review - for which it's you that deserves the 5* rather than us - for the most thorough review of the year ! We're really pleased that you liked the gite so much that you booked to come back before you'd even left ! And we do recognise what you say about the downstairs loo - as soon as we sum up the courage to knock through the metre thick wall we'll put one upstairs - but we can't promise when that will be ! You were both a pleasure to meet and we look forward to welcoming you back next year. Best wishes and thanks from Martin + Chris
