About the Owner

Hi, my name is Catherine, I'm Irish and have been renting out my mountain retreat for eight years. I want all my guests to feel like we as a family do when we go out to Crete, as if they never want to leave! My kids often accuse me of having OCD as I like everything to be perfect for guests. Our house has been furnished and finished to the highest of standards because I want the best for you.We have had such amazing feedback from all our guests this year (34 reviews on Tripadvisor!) with many mailing me on their return thinking of returning to Villa Vouno next year. I have many many contacts in Crete and make a point of trying to help guests tailor their holiday by putting them into contact with a network of Cretans who can make their dreams come true! Don't take my word, see the reviews!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Catherine

Yes, arrived home late last evening somewhat tired and had an early start this morning but I have the rest of the week off for recovery and laundry purposes! We had the best time, amazing weather every single day and we did some fabulous excursions. The Samaria Gorge was incredibly dramatic (I imagine you’ve done this at some point) though my legs still haven’t 100% recovered from that steep descent, don’t think those particular muscles have been used for some time … but it was definitely worth it! Really enjoyed looking round the War Museum, lovely chap who explained everything in half Greek/English … followed by lunch in one of the tavernas overlooking the plateau, what an incredible place and with such a history. Stunning scenery and villages on the road to Elafonisi and we found an almost deserted area of the beach to the left of the main area, just heavenly for swimming and sunbathing. Visited Lake Kourno which was very pretty, also Chania where we had our feet nibbled … weird but very relaxing sensation. Richard dived down to the Elephant’s Cave – he’s quite an experienced diver but found that quite scary but also incredibly stunning … We relaxed and swam from the dive RIB while my husband dived – so we all enjoyed ourselves. All in all, we couldn’t have asked for a better holiday – and your Villa was just perfect for what we needed, and that view is just unsurpassed! I’m missing the sound of those sheep and goats bells already – so soporific.

Also confirm the links work fine, I just haven’t had a moment to write the reviews yet but will do so in the next few days.

Thank you for everything Catherine, it was a memorable holiday and I hope we’ll have the opportunity to return one day.

Best wishes

Judy

Comfortable, traditional villa with breathtaking views.

  • 5 of 5

Perched high up on the hillside in a quiet area above Kokkino Chorio, Villa Vouno has extensive views over Souda Bay. Two large balconies give great opportunities for relaxing in the sun or shade while admiring the stunning views, perfect for watching the sun set over Souda Bay and mountains. Steps in the garden lead to an upper terrace with a swimming pool and large barbeque area also with extensive views.

The villa is comfortably furnished with a large sitting area, a kitchen fully equipped for self catering and three bedrooms, a bathroom and two shower rooms, one ensuite to the double bedroom, ideal for a family. The villa is a short walk from St Georges Retreat Taverna which serves not only food and drink but also some great sunsets. There are a variety of other tavernas a 5 to15 minute drive away in the local villages and on the coast at Almyrida plus a minimarket in Kokkino Chorio. The owner could not have been more helpful in supplying the information we needed to make the most of our stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our two week stay in October which included getting married at the villa and using it as a wonderful place to honeymoon, relax and explore the beautiful west of Crete.

Lovely villa, peaceful location, spectacular views

  • 5 of 5

Villa Vouno is in a beautiful location high up on the Drapanos Peninsula. The views are second to none. We’ve never stayed anywhere before where you can enjoy both sunrise and sunset over the sea and the villa has two lovely terraces to sit and appreciate them, as well as a pretty entrance terrace. Loved the front door with individual panels that open so you can see who’s there! The villa has a cool stone interior and is very restful, comfortable and well furnished. We always had the windows and French doors open when we were home which let in a cool breeze. The pool and barbecue areas are lovely - completely private as there is only the steep mountainside behind - and well planted with flowers, herbs and shrubs so there are lots of butterflies, bees and other insects. The pool itself is a really good size and it’s so peaceful – the only sounds being the cicadas and the bleating of the goats.

Crete is a beautiful island and a week is not enough even for just this particular area in the north west. We really enjoyed hiking down the Imbros Gorge (came across hardly any other walkers so felt we had the place to ourselves); driving south across the mountains to Hora Sfakion and taking a boat to Loutro (a lovely place); Lake Kournas where we sunbathed on the shore on a mat of wild thyme – the fragrance was amazing; Chania old town and a boat and snorkeling trip from Chania harbour. There was also great snorkeling in the little cove in Kokkino Chorio. It was exciting to watch from our terrace a submarine coming into the bay and we also explored the World War 2 bunker and tunnels up the hill behind the villa which was rather scary but interesting! However, I have to say that the highlight of every day was watching the sunset from the villa. It was so spectacular that it got to the point that we wouldn’t go out until the sun finally disappeared from view!

Almyrida and Plaka are close by for eating out, but if you don’t want to drive St George’s Retreat (5 minutes walk) has a lovely terrace and the same great view as the villa. We ate there twice and it was nice to have that option.

Catherine, the owner, was immensely helpful throughout and sent us loads of information and photographs. She clearly loves Villa Vouno and it’s easy to see why. She really wants her guests to enjoy it as much as she and her family and does her best to ensure that they do.

A wonderful holiday in a magical place. Loved it! Hope to come back one day!

Thank you Catherine.

Owner's Response: Hi Heather, Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review (All of them!!!!). I am really glad that you enjoyed yourselves in Crete and at Villa Vouno. We don't ever get to do the things we planned either, when we are there.....it's just too easy to sit back and chill at the Villa. Anyway, I hope your holiday keeps you going for a while now that you are back to our lovely British weather! Best regards, Catherine

Lovely property, stunning views!

  • 4 of 5

We had a fantastic time at Villa Vouno with our two young children. The views from the terraces are fantastic, especially at sunset time. The house is spacious and simply but stylishly decorated. Lovely family-friendly beaches are a short drive away. The pool and BBQ area is wonderful and set away from the house so no worries about our preschoolers wandering out of the villa and falling in. The house is set on a mountainside on the edge of a tiny village, so you need to drive to amenities, but there is a nice taverna next door where we had dinner. Thoroughly recommend.

Relaxing retreat with spectacular views

  • 5 of 5

Villa Vouno is a fabulous villa. The villa itself is well appointed with three good sized bedrooms, a great open plan kitchen dining area and comfortable cosy living room. The winning aspect for us however were the balconies. There is a large balcony off the living room overlooking the sea with table and chairs for 6 perfect for a family meal. Above this connecting two of the bedrooms is another large balcony with outdoor sofa, chairs coffee table and sun loungers, I spent many hours with my book reading on this balcony. There is also a front covered porch with bistro table and two chairs and hanging chair which catches the early morning sun. We had a bit of rain on our last day and it was wonderful sitting in the hanging chair listening to the rain looking out at the view with beer in hand! The pool on the upper terrace is a great size, big enough for laps and lovely to relax beside. Also on this upper area is a fabulous BBQ and outdoor dining area. The views from the villa are wonderful, on the side of a mountain with vista over the sea. There are other villas dotted around so there is no feeling of isolation and the peace and calm and privacy is maintained because this villa is the highest up. The sound of goat bells and their beating, crickets and bird song are the main sounds up at the villa and this is a wonderful soundtrack. Crete itself is a fabulous island with so many different aspects, Villa Vouno is about 35-40 minutes for the beautiful town of Chania which is very much worth a visit and there are plenty of other towns and villages within close driving distances including Plaka with lovely taverna’s and the beach resort of Almyrida and a little further afield but still very manageable on day trips are world renowned stunning beaches, gorges and historical sights. Far too much to enjoy in just one week so we’re already craving to return! Catherine is a very generous owner, she gave us plenty of local information and made sure we had everything we needed for a fabulous trip. We felt thoroughly cared for and appreciated and highly recommend this villa.

Owner's Response: Hi Chloe, Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review on this and Facebook....and what a review! I am so glad you both enjoyed yourselves; reading it out to my hubby has taken him to the calendar to a) see what I have left and when he could go and b) onto Ryanair to see what it's going to cost him!!!! Meanwhile, I'm stuck here working....although to be fair I have a lovely job getting brides all sorted for their big day, so I can't complain! Anyway, I hope it keeps you going for many months to come....until next time. Cx

Beautiful villa in a beautiful setting.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely villa - clean, spacious and well equipped. The pool is simply stunning - if a little cold at first! The uninterrupted views of Souda Bay are breathtaking. BBQ facilities are excellent, couldn't ask for more.

Catherine has been very helpful throughout - from booking, to directions and recommendations of what to do in the local area.

The situation of the villa is very convenient from Chania airport and once you've found it once you realise it is very straightforward to get to. It is a good base to explore Chania and the surrounding areas and also Rethymno.

A car is a must in this villa. The nearest beach at Almyrida is only a 10 minute drive away but it is not walkable due to the mountainous terrain!

A Fantastic Villa

  • 5 of 5

You are first greeted by the gorgeous views, a lovely welcome pack which was greatly appreciated and the villa is spotlessly clean! We couldn't fault it, there is everything you might need including some binoculars! We had a lovely stay and wish we had booked 2 weeks instead of the 1 as it went way too quickly.

Catherine was brilliant, right from my first enquiry until the end, answering all my questions and giving us loads of information about the area and things to see and do.

Thank you so much for letting us into your gorgeous villa and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a peaceful getaway. The only thing I would say is the photos don't do the villa any justice, it is so much better in the flesh!

Thanks again.

Location

From the Owner

When I was a child,my father spent each Summer sailing charter yachts from mainland Greece to Bodrum in Turkey for his best friend who was Greek. I grew up with Greece in my blood. When my father passed away, we took a trip out in memory of him and fell in love with the Island of Crete. While we have been going out to Crete for many years, we have never grown tired of the place or feel that we have seen it all! There is still so much to see and do. The house is near enough to the very best areas to visit and restaurants without ever being amid a throng of tourists. When my husband and I go out on our own, the house offers us relaxation. When we go out with our four kids (Teens to tiny!), it becomes our home for excitement and fun. There truly is something for everyone in the West of Crete.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

If you enjoy nature and birds, we have contacts for walking tours of the area. There are also local sailing schools and windsurfing schools in the area. I also have contacts if you want to rent a sail boat or have the luxury of having a captain and crew take you around the coast for a day! If you are planning a romantic holiday or just one full of surprises, I can put you in touch with the local people who can make your holiday dreams come true!

Coast/Beach:

The beautiful, blue flag beach of Almerida is less than 6mins drive away and is perfect for those with small children as the beach gently shelves. There are many, many other beaches nearby like Kera beach (10 mins) and Georgeopolis (30 mins). It is worth exploring the different beaches and some of the little coves nearby, as with most of this area of Crete, they are beautiful and amongst the cleanest in the world.

Travel:

The Villa is set midway between the two Venetian cities of Chania and Rethymnon. They are each about 30-40 mins away by car and again well worth a visit. Chania has a very famous covered market and both have amazing harbour side restaurants. The restaurants a little in from the harbour side tend to be better priced but it is worth trying the Fortezza restaurant across the other side of the harbour (This means a short trip across on the restaurants boat!) The snorkeling trips are also worthwhile.

Distances:

Kokkino Chorio village, where the village scenes for Zorba the Greek where filmed is nearby. Plaka, where Costa runs a great little supermarket, the organic taverna at the glass blowing workshop is well worth a visit, five mins drive. There is also a petrol station here. Almerida, the beach town is 10 mins away and has tavernas, shops, internet access and much more. Kalives is 15 mins away and is a larger town. Vamos is inland, very pretty and 12 mins away. Lake Kornas about 25 min.

Further Details:

There is a great water park on the far side of Chania near Omalous which is suitable for kids from 2 to 92! Also in the area there is horse riding at Georgiopoli, 'safari' through the White Mountains, boat trips, snorkeling, windsurfing and much more. The cities of Chania and Rethymno are Venetian fort cities and well worth exploring. They both have narrow cobbled streets in the oldest parts with tall narrow Italianite buildings and architecture left over from several hundred years of Venetian rule. There is also much evidence of Turkish occupation in some of the architecture around the area. Aptera is one of the nearest forts to the house (20 mins) and has been there for over 2000 years. In the house I have binoculars for guests to use, and with these you can see clearly, Aptera from the front as well as the island beside the NATO base. To watch the silent ships come in early in the morning is my favourite occupation. Also in Almerida (As well as Chania itself) there is an archaeological dig where you can see fantastic mosaic work. The local potteries and crafts are all easy to find and see.

Facilities

From the Owner

Because of the location of our house (at the top of Cape Drapanos) our views, of Souda Island, the bay, Chania at night, as well as Aptera and many many other focal points, are uninterrupted and unbelievably hard to leave. I become a coffee junky... just to wander out onto one of the many terraces and verandas just to gaze over the clear as crystal waters and the ancient land. At night there is nothing more beautiful than cooking on the huge BBQ while the kids swim in the pool, underneath a blanket of shooting stars. We have been known literally, to see the sun rise because we didn't want to sleep. I guarantee that once you experience our house, the complete privacy of the pool and mountainside BBQ terrace, you will be delighted with the high standards that we have established....for you!
