About the property

Originally built in 1836, Bois Blanc was a Cognac producer's house and is set, away from busy roads, in the Grand Champagne region of the Cognac vineyards. It is now owned by an English couple who are renovating the main house. There are no immediate neighbours. The cottage is set in its own raised gardens, and the landscaping is being carefully arranged to provide privacy between the cottage and the barn. Neither is overlooked by the owners who live in the main house. The large 12 x 6m L shaped pool has ample space to practice lengths while the deep stepped area allows you to sit and dip your feet in the water while reading a book ... without being splashed! The cottage and barn have been furnished to a very high standard - take a look at the photos and visit our website (click the link for owners website).

WORRIED ABOUT SECURITY? We are quite happy to organise a Viber video link so that you can see that we are actually at the property! We have successfully let our properties for years without problems. Before you arrive we send you a pack telling you all about Bois Blanc and the area - as well as detailed directions of how to find us. You can also call us on the French or English phone numbers to chat about the house.

About Badger Davis

We are Badger and Mandie Davis both in our 40's with 2 teenage daughters. We have owned Bois Blanc for 13 years building it up from derelict. Badger is an ex Army Major, running a small design agency (specialising in interior design) in France and UK. Mandie runs her own French language educational business in the UK. We have a house in Tunbridge Wells, where our daughters go to school, and we and live between UK and France. We both took 7 years out of the rat race to get Bois Blanc up and running and found it an inspiring and liberating experience which changed us for good! We have invested a lot in Bois Blanc as we believe that holidays are the most important weeks of the year for you. Everything must be high quality and special, and thats what we have aimed to create at Bois Blanc.

Badger Davis purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Badger Davis chose Charente

The 3 L's (location) of house buying guided us to Bois Blanc, as it is literally in the middle of the vineyards of the 'Grand Champagne' Cru of cognac (the most prestigious cru). At the end of its own track with no neighbours, Bois Blanc is a peaceful and beautiful setting. It is also within 45 minutes of the magical South-West Coast, were we spend lots of our time. Summers here are always good and one can use the pool until the end of September. We love the Charente region as its is largely undeveloped and unspoiled. Time has stood still here and you really can relax from the moment you step out of the car and breath the fresh air. There is lots to see and do; the famous islands of Ré and Oleron are easily accessible, as are Bordeaux (for civilisation) and St Emilion (for wine). Finally the cognac here in the Grand Champagne is the best in the world!

What makes this cottage unique

Bois Blanc was a literal ruin, but this gave us scope to renovate the traditional stone exteriors and then add completely modern interiors. Thus we have all the beauty of an old house with all modern conveniences. Being designers, we have made the interiors of the Cottage and the Barn interesting, harmonious and inspiring. We used expensive materials and fittings to make Bois Blanc the best in the region and fitting of your holiday expectations. These are individually tailored holiday apartments not Gites! The Gardens and pool have had the same treatment to give Bois Blanc the luxury of a hotel, without the impersonality and the exclusivity of a villa, without the isolation. Our own house...........it's not even half finished yet, as for us, its always guests first!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"You have RUINED all our holidays in France! How can we go anywhere else now?!"

"It's not often everything you see on the website lives up to expectations - but Bois Blanc does that and more! It was definitely worth the 2 year wait for us to get here!"

"We have had the most fantastic holiday here at Bois Blanc; 5 star accommodation, surroundings, hospitality and peace and quiet. Every day has been special and we would recommend a holiday here to anyone."

"We hugely appreciate your careful restoration of this cottage and the obvious attention to every single detail."

"To say it is anything short of astonishing is doing you a disservice. We will all be moving in with you!"

"This is a spectacular location and a beautiful property - you have created a wonderful atmosphere of peace and tranquility. We had great expectations before we arrived and they have been met and exceeded"

Notes on accommodation: Bois Blanc has been carefully restored to allow for the peace and relaxation of our guests. We do not add extra beds and only have accommodation for one 'family' (max 4) and one 'couple' (max 2). This is not a gite complex but rather 2 individual, high quality, holiday venues in a very secluded location. Outside: The cottage has 2 private terraces - North and South so there is usually a choice of sunshine or shade . There is an outdoor dining table and chairs. The barn also has it's own shaded private decking, with dining table and chairs. The pool is 12m x 6m, making a L-shape with the steps which are 4m x 4m. Around the pool there are 2 double bed loungers, and two single loungers. Both the cottage and barn have a Weber BBQ. The gardens are still growing (!) but the layout provides various peaceful areas to relax in.

Another fantastic week

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at Bois Blanc Cottage and once again it did not disappoint. The cottage itself is a delight; a modern, relaxed and fantastic place for our family to stay. It provides an oasis of tranquility, peace and quiet in order to get away from it all yet remains close enough to so many great places that my wife and i plus our 2 teenage boys are never bored. The pool and outside space are great for enjoying the sun and having great family time and Badger remains an excellent host being welcoming and only too happy to help and offer ideas yet giving you the space to relax and unwind in peace. Highly recommended.

Amazing place to stay , book it!

  • 5 of 5

Amazing place to stay inside and outside. Great house, garden and pool with fab views of the vineyards. So much to do in the surrounding area it was difficult to choose. Badger gave us some great ideas for trips out. A highlight for our family was the Chateau des Enigmes. If this place is free, book it.

Wonderful Holiday at Bois Blanc

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the designer cottage and it could not have been more comfortable. Everything about the cottage was first class. The owner even delivers to you bread every morning! The pool was so refreshing after hours in the sun. Walks in the surrounding vineyards or down to the local village were beautiful. Cycling to places further afield were truly stunning. The whole area is magnificent from Jarnac to Jonzac to Cognac to Saintes to Ile de Re and Ile d'Oleron. Plenty to see, do, taste and drink. We certainly shall be booking Bois Blanc again.

As so many others have commented, it is often the little touches that transform a good holiday into a really very special holiday. That is certainly the case with Badger and Mandie who go out of their way to ensure you feel like a guest rather than a client -and never intrusively so. As you would expect, the property is of an exceptionally high standard: beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. Outside, the gardens and pool area are just perfect. Private and spacious, this really is a hidden gem. We would certainly recommend a stay here and have already booked for next year.

A hidden gem

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a very relaxing week at Bois Blanc. The accommodation was excellent with very comfortable beds and all mod cons. The waft of lavender from the garden and sounds of bees made it a perfect place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There were plenty of places to visit nearby but you do need a car to do so. The pool was really inviting and the children loved it. All in all it was a great holiday enhanced by Badger's friendly manner and helpful tips about where to go and what to see. Our batteries have been well and truly recharged. Would love to return at some point.

Special interest holidays:

If you have an interest in cognac, we can arrange visits to some of the smaller producers as well as the larger cognac houses. If you are visiting over the November to January period, there would be the opportunity to see the distillation process carried out on traditional stills. Please email us if you want us to arrange this for you or to put together a cognac lover's package including lots of visits and tastings. Have a look at our websites for various packages we offer.

About 50 mins drive from the coast. You can explore the Gironde estuary, the beaches around Royan, La Palmyre and the Cote Sauvage. The Ile de Ré and the Ile d'Oleron are close enough to make a day trip. All the beaches are sandy and it's easy to find secluded spots.

Nearest airports - La Rochelle (1 and a half hour's drive), Angouleme, (1 hour), Bordeaux, (1 hour 10 mins), Poitiers (2 hours). Due to the isolated location a car is quite important, but not essential if you just want to chill out here and not go anywhere. We can arrange pick up from a station or airport (at an additional cost).

Nearest village is 3km with small shop, post office, bar, cafe (it's all in one!). Cognac is the nearest town, about 15km away with restaurants, cafes, bars and shopping . St Emilion 80km, Bordeaux 90km, Angouleme 45km, La Rochelle 65km, Ile d'Re 70km.

Further Details:

Plenty of historic towns to visit within an hour: Cognac, Saintes, Angouleme, Royan, La Rochelle, St Emilion and Bordeaux. Fantastic scenery, stone villages and a sea of cognac vines. Outdoor activities include: canoeing, cycling, walking, swimming. There are miles of off-road tracks through the vines which are great for walking, cycling or riding. The Atlantic coast and the famous islands of Oleron and Ré. Quaint costal villages, huge stretches of sandy, dune backed beaches. Oysters, Seafood, wine, cognac and pineau. Lots of independent Cognac estates to visit. International Blues Passions event (awesome!) in Cognac (2011 Moby, Morcheeba, ZZ Top - 2012 The Cranberries, Sting, Hugh Laurie). Street theatre festival in September. Fete d'Cognac outdoor music and food festival (fantastic). Contact us if you want to know if anything is going on when you visit.
