Apartment In XVII Century Former Priory With large, heated (16m x 8.5m) Pool

Overview

Property

Updated: 30-May-2016
Apartment in Graveson, Nr. St Remy de Provence, France - Secluded Yet In The Heart Of The Village

This attractive XVIII Century property, formerly a silk factory and then a Priory, lies in the small Provencal village of Graveson. The apartment has undergone substantial refurbishment to a very high standard, with a new kitchen and bathrooms. The sun filled rooms on the first floor have tall ceilings and huge windows looking out over a sizeable mature garden and pool area. It is only 10 minutes from the chic and beautiful town of St Remy de Provence and 20 minutes from the bustling medieval city of Avignon, the centre of which is ranked as UNESCO World Heritage. There is so much to see and do in this scenic and cultural area of France, with the coast only 40 minutes away. The property is secluded, yet in the heart of the village and less than 5 mins on foot from a well stocked supermarket. The apartment is a good size (64sqm). The thick walls, tall ceilings, tiled floors, huge windows and surrounding trees help keep the inside relatively cool. We would not necessarily recommend this apartment for toddlers/very small children because of the tall windows which drop to within two and a half feet of the floor. There are 10 other apartments largely used as second homes by European owners but there is a large pool to share.

About the Owner

We have been travelling to Provence for over 25 years and still love the area. As a fans of historic cars we have travelled the length and breadth of France on car rallies for many years and although there are many beautiful areas, Provence has to be our favourite. We live and work in UK but like many, hope to spend more time in France later in life because we enjoy the climate, the wine and food as well as the culture and the many new places to explore.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We all thought the apartment was delightful. Very spacious, beautifully decorated and clean. The kitchen had ample equipment, plates, glasses, bowls etc which apartments in France often do not have! The swimming pool was fantastic and we were in it most days from 4pm. Clean and quiet.

We did trips every morning and saw an awful lot. Graveson is extremely well placed to visit a great many interesting and beautiful places. Laura Simmons - Aug 09.

The apartment was spacious, clean and attractive. The fact the residence included secure parking and an enclosed area was also an advantage. The garden and pool areas were well maintained and pleasant. Paul Browes - Sept 09.

We had a great week in Provence, exploring the area. The apartment was

really comfortable, one of the nicest places we have stayed in booked via

Owners Direct. Thanks so much for letting us reschedule the week from April.

Exploring Provence

  • 4 of 5

The centrally located Apartment made it so easy to explore Provence & the Carmargue. Very pleasant Apartment with good facilities and set in attractive surroundings. Weather not hot enough to use the pool which we appreciated was end of season but it needed cleaning. The 5 minute walk to the local Bakers was a joy as the quality of their Breads and cakes were superb. The Super U Supermarket was also very close and well stocked at competitive prices, wine selection excellent. Would have no problem recommending this Apartment.

Owner's Response: I am pleased to see a genuinely favourable report. The only reason the pool was not as clean as normal is because the mistral was blowing hard and scattering leaves everywhere. We have a weekly contract with a pool maintenance company and pumps/filters are being renewed winter 2013 to ensure all systems will be at peak performance for 2014.

Location

From the Owner

If ever there was a situation where the heart ruled the head this is it. Once I saw a picture of this property I fell in love with it and although it has been a bit of a journey, I still get pleasure from looking at the building. In 2010, we decided to give it a serious re-furb and with the help of a brilliant macon based in Graveson, it is what you see today. It needs some finishing touches with decor/furniture but the beautiful windows allow the light to flood in or the shutters to stop it completely to enjoy a great lie-in, gently disturbed by the local clocks. We also chose the area for its beauty and ease of access whether by road, rail or the 6 airports within striking distance. It is nicely situated so it is not heaving in the summer yet close to the bustle of St Remy.

Special interest holidays:

This is an area of great interest to artists because of the natural light and surroundings, hence the art schools of Avignon. The apartment is named after local artist Auguste Chabaud, a contemporary of Matisse and Derain. It is also less than 30 minutes from the Southern Rhone Vineyards including Chateauneuf du Pape.

Coast/Beach:

Appx 45 minute drive to Camargue/Coast, due south.

Travel:

The area is well served by several airports, all with hire car facilities. Also a TGV train service as well as the AutoRail service, both of which stop at Avignon. Nimes Airport 35km (Ryanair from London, Liverpool and E. Midlands). Avignon Airport 18km (Flybe from various airports in England & Scotland). Montpellier & Marseilles Airports both just over 1 hour away, mainly on autoroute (Ryanair & Easyjet).

Distances:

40 minutes from the Camargue/Coast, 35 minutes from Nimes/Arles, 30 minutes from Orange & Peter Mayle's residence, 20 minutes from Avignon/Les Baux and 10 minutes from St Remy/Tarascon.

Further Details:

Graveson has a bank, Boulangeries, several restaurants & cafes, newsagent and a market. It also has a nearby tennis club and wine caves. Tennis, horseriding, gliding and small plane trips are available over the Alpilles, near St Remy as well as wonderful walks and cycling. It is not far from Chateauneuf du Pape so wine tasting and gourmet eating are essential! There is a Tourist Office in the village to help you. We can arrange for a chef to cook a meal for you, or alternatively, you could go to his cookery school in the village about 300 metres away.

Facilities

From the Owner

We find that the property is perfectly located for exploring and having had it for a number of years, we are constantly finding wonderful new places. To the south there is the Camargue and the coast, to the east, the Luberon and further, the heart of Provence, to the west the Languedoc and to the north Avignon and beyond that the wine growing areas of the southern Rhone. The town is sprawling, with a number or restaurants but all spread out. Much work has been going on in the town centre, which will bring more restaurants and activity but it is not the magnet of St Remy and so you can park and get about in the busy periods. The supermarket is only 5 minutes on foot and is very well stocked. The property has a lovely pool to be enjoyed by everyone respectful of one anothers enjoyment.
