About the Owner

Owned by Brian and Sue and our daughter Amy.

Sue spent 10 years teaching French and always wanted to live the life rather than spend all her time talking about it.

We decided in spring 2007 to either buy our dream home, or stop talking about it!

We've never regretted it for one minute. As it is our home and not just a holiday let we have furnished and equipped it accordingly - we hope you enjoy your time there as much as we do.

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

We have holidayed in cottages/gites several times in France and done similar in Italy, the USA and at home in the UK. In France we've found a huge variation in the comfort and quality of holiday rental accommodation. We've come to the conclusion that English-owned properties are often better (or at least better suited to us). This is particularly the case when the owner uses the property themselves So it proved with Les Challonnières.

This place is brilliantly well furnished and equipped with nothing left wanting. There are super comfy and large sofas in a spacious lounge with a glorious fireplace. The kitchen has every pot, pan and gadget you can think of. The pictures on this site are a fair representation of how the property looks.

The bedrooms are smallish (they have been created in the roof space with dormer windows) and the main is unusually accessed through a very low doorway over 3 steps to get over the roof beams. There is an ensuite shower room which is small but nice. There are two sofabeds on the mezzanine outside the main bedroom, The other proper bedroom is access by its own staircase from behind the kitchen. Kids will probably love the idea of benig in their own space. There is a 2nd large bathroom on the ground floor with bath.

The front gardens are shown in the pictures and we spent quite a lot of time relaxing there. The gardens front on to a small single track lane, but there is hardly any traffic and only one neighbour. The main road 1/4 miles away can be heard a little but it doesn't spoil relaxation. There is also a large back garden which I don't think is shown in the pictures. This is surrounded by woods and is again very peaceful.

We couldn't have been happier with the cottage and hope to return.

The area does not have much on the doorstep in terms of towns to visit/things to do unless you make your own fun with walking/bikes. But one can travel a little further and find enough to enjoy. This worked for us as ours was a short trip and we did not want to travel further from the port on this occasion (atypical of our French trips).

Lonlay-l'Abbaye is very close, small but pretty. Domfront is worth a short wander. The church in the centre of the old town is a real surprise. Also consider Lassay-les-Châteaux (a bit further) if going that way. We also visited Bagnoles-de-l'Orne on market day which was not really our cup of tea, but check it out on Streetview if interested to get an idea.

A beautiful house in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We chose this property because we wanted a house full of character but still with all the modern home comforts.

It was everything we wanted and so much more. There is plenty of space inside and out to make yourself at home and everything we needed was provided.

The house is in a very rural area but is close enough to a few towns so supermarkets etc are not far away and there is plenty to see and do within easy reach. We visited the D Day beaches, Bayeux, Saint Malo and they are all within about an hours drive.

The owners of the property were very helpful, answering all our questions so we didn't need to worry about anything when we arrived.

I would recommend this property to anyone interested in visiting this area but who also wants to get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet of the lovely countryside.

Owner's Response: Thanks very much for such a great review. It's lovely to hear you had a great time and appreciated our cottage which we consider to be our home, not just a holiday let - that's why we've gone to great lengths to make our guests feel comfortable there from the outset. As you say, it's in a lovely location with lots of interesting towns and historical sites within an easy drive.

Lovely cottage in the countryside

  • 5 of 5

We spent three nights in May at the lovely restored cottage of Les Challonnieres in the Normandy countryside. It it well-appointed, very clean and comfortable and a wide range of brochures and books were available on the area. The free wifi and landline calls back to New Zealand was appreciated. I would recommend having a torch handy at night. It rained throughout our stay but we enjoyed walking the lanes, discovering the roadside plants and the birdsong way a treat. The cuckoo had arrived for spring! Nearby Lonlay Abbey has an interesting history and its village is pleasant to explore. We wandered the medieval village of Domfront and had lunch in its impressive castle ruins overlooking a delightful valley. We enjoyed a delicious three-course dinner at the Auberge de Grand Grousier in Domfront and would recommend this restaurant for its food, staff and ambience. The Chateau de Carrouges and the adjacent apple and pear tree collection were well worth the visit. The pear cider from this region is most pleasant. We could easily have spent a week in this area as there is so much to discover.

Owner's Response: Jeanette, thanks very much for such a complimentary review of our cottage and the area. In your short stay you certainly seem to have made the most of visiting the lovely local villages, tourist attractions and the the lanes which are right on the doorstep and ideal for walks and cycling along. You're absolutely right about how dark it is at night as there's no light pollution and that's why we provide a torch but you need to know where it is! We hope to be able to welcome you back some day so you can discover even more of the delights Normandy has to offer both near (Bagnoles-de-L'Orne, Villedieu-les-Poêles, La Ferté-Macé, Granville) and a little further afield (Bayeux, the Normandy Landing Beaches etc.)

Amazing, relaxing, beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week at this beautiful cottage. The setting was extremely peaceful and we enjoyed listening and watching the 'buzzard or kite' that soared above the cottage most days. We were lucky enough to enjoy fantastic weather and the garden was a great place to relax, play some badminton and have a BBQ in. The property was located near lovely towns and villages. Domfront was just a short drive up the road and is a great medieval town with bars and restaurants and also a couple of well stocked supermarkets. We ventured to Mont St Michel which took only 40mins on quiet roads, Ducey is a lovely place to stop for lunch on the way. If you love walking, you can walk the quiet roads around the property for miles and miles in fantastic countryside without the worry of traffic, there really isn’t any.

The cottage is full of character and very comfortable. It has everything you need to just start your holiday without worrying about ‘I forgot the…’, there was basically everything you need to just get on and enjoy your holiday.

Sue and Brian were great with the booking process and making sure we had all the information required before we left. A week was not long enough! Thank you Sue and Brian.

Owner's Response: Thank you for such a fantastic review and it's great to hear you all enjoyed your holiday at our cottage. We really do try to make it a "home from home" by making it as comfortable as possible and by supplying all the essentials for a relaxing holiday. It's good to know you enjoyed the peaceful garden and also watching the birds; we like to watch the woodpeckers who are regular visitors! As you rightly point out there's lots of open countryside in the immediate vicinity to enjoy either on foot or on the bikes we provide. Travelling a little further afield there's historic Domfront with its medieval streets and castle and the Abbey at Lonlay L'Abbaye is a must. The Normandy landing beaches draw thousands of visitors each year as does Bayeux and they're both great for a day out. We really appreciate you taking the time to write your review which we're sure prospective guests will find most helpful.

Beautiful rural cottage with all the home comforts

  • 5 of 5

A very well appointed and comfortable cottage restored to a very high standard. We enjoy cooking and found that the kitchen had everything we could possibly need - far better than a typical holiday rental.

The loction is beautiful, very tranquil but in close proximity to lots of points of interest. We very much enjoyed walking in the area as well as exporing the beautiful local towns and villages. Thank you Sue and Brian - we will be back!

Owner's Response: Peter, thank you very much for your glowing review of our cottage. We're so pleased you enjoyed Christmas there and hope you found the chocolates we left on the tree for you!! Like you I love cooking and that is why the kitchen is so well equipped. As for the rest of the house it's our home and want to create a real home from home experience for our guests so we have furnished it accordingly. As you say, there's so much to do and see in the area and all within very easy reach. We look forward to welcoming you and your family back.

Cottage spotless on arrival. Beautiful countryside to walk in and peaceful garden to site in. Lots of interesting places to visit. The weather wasn't brilliant but it didn't matter. Enjoyed cosy evenings by the fire.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review - I will pass on your comments about how clean the cottage was. As you say there are lots of beautiful country walks close by, including in the Andaines Forest and after that you can just relax in our lovely peaceful garden.
