It is set in half an acre of enclosed gardens with swings for the children and there is an orchard with apple, pear and damson trees. About 2 miles away is the local village of Lonlay L'Abbaye with its famous biscuit factory, bakers, butchers, post office, mini supermarket, and 4 miles away is the medieval town of Domfront which has all the shops you could want including 2 supermarkets. The cottage has been tastefully restored yet has every modern convenience, most importantly it retains all the character including oak beams and a huge stone chimney with log burner and open fireplace so typical of the area. It is furnished and equipped to an exceptionally high standard and provides every home comfort. There is a large selection of books, DVDs, cds, games and jigsaw puzzles available for you to use. Please note that the weekly rate only applies to bookings starting on a Saturday. About Sue Johnson

Owned by Brian and Sue and our daughter Amy.

Sue spent 10 years teaching French and always wanted to live the life rather than spend all her time talking about it.

We decided in spring 2007 to either buy our dream home, or stop talking about it!

We've never regretted it for one minute. As it is our home and not just a holiday let we have furnished and equipped it accordingly - we hope you enjoy your time there as much as we do.

Sue Johnson purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Sue Johnson chose Rouellé

Les Challonnières is a beautiful "chocolate box" house with lots of character. There is so much to do and see in the area and the Normandy Landing Beaches are a must to visit.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is situated on a quiet lane with very little passing traffic and is surrounded by lovely countryside. We have an orchard with apple and pear trees and lots of space for children to play in.

Great cottage in an idyllic location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was everything we expected from the photographs and reviews but with some other quirks - like the steps over the beams to access the master bedroom - which only added to the charm. It was clean, tidy, well equipped and cosy - everything one would hope for in a holiday home. The surrounding area is full of things to see and do and we could definitely have spent longer exploring; a week was simply not enough!

As you say there are so many things to see and do in the area and we hope that one day you might return to explore more of them.

Lovely cosy property

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in November on a house hunting trip. The cottage was centrally situated for ease of travel to all areas around Domfront. The cottage was very well equipped with all the items you would need and the kitchen was full of all mod cons. The house was cold when we arrived, but once the woodburner was going it soon warmed up and the house was then warm and cosy. A big new Intermarche supermarket was only about 10 minutes away and smaller shops were even closer, just five minutes down the road. All in all the cottage was perfect for what we were looking for and in a calm and peaceful part of the countryside. I loved standing outside at dusk listening to the owls hooting . . . . . ,

Quaint and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the 4 nights we stayed in September. It ended up cooler than expected and rainy but we were warm and comfortable. Minor issues popped up but were handled quickly by Sue and Brian. They were always available. The cottage is very well equipped and in a quiet, lovely and convenient location . We enjoyed visiting Domfront, just minutes away. It was less than 90 minutes to the Normandy beaches and about 60 minutes to Mt St Michel. Both bedrooms upstairs(one up a spiral cute!) allow for privacy. Thank you Brian and Sue for a lovely stay.

Beautifully restored half-timbered property with garden all sides in a peaceful countryside location

  • 5 of 5

This was the ideal property for four old friends to spend a week catching up, relaxing and pottering round the local sights.

The cottage was comfortable and well equipped, obviously used by the owners themselves rather than just a source of income as a holiday let.

The area itself is not overly touristy but one felt rather that one was getting the genuine Normandy experience with plenty of local produce and reasonably priced bars and restaurants.

Domfront, Lonlay LAbbaye and Bagnoles sur L'Orne are within easy reach of the cottage and the château at Carrouges, set in beautiful parkland is well worth a visit. However, we did venture further afield to Mont St Michel, about an hour and a quarter's drive away for the full-on tourist experience. We were fortunate to go on a beautiful, hot summer's day and although busy, luckily not to maximum capacity ,we were captivated by the abbey and its magical setting. The whole week was perfect , made more so by glorious weather.

Owner's Response: Thanks very much for your kind words. Great to hear you enjoyed the cottage and managed to make the most of all the area has to offer. As you say - it's right at the heart of Normandy with lots of lovely villages to visit as well as the landing beaches to the north. Not to mention all the local produce such as the cider and calvados and some good value restaurants all close by.

Domfront, (about 4 mls away) is a pretty medieval town with narrow streets, half-timbered houses and castle. It holds a medieval festival every 2 years in August .
