About the property

Villa in Boim, Nr. Lousada - Ideally placed for touring or relaxation

Please note that the property now sleeps FOUR people and not seven as last year. The villa is ideally located equally for relaxing in the sun by the pool or for exploring the area's beautiful scenery and the rich cultural heritage of Northern Portugal. There are 2 double bedrooms, a lounge, a fully equipped modern bathroom, a further separate WC and a newly furbished kitchen. There is a small garden at the front and a larger garden to the rear of the property with lawns, flowers and fruit trees as well as a swimming pool and sun terrace. The property has air-conditioning/heating if necessary in one of the two bedrooms (the largest double) and the lounge/dining room, with fans in the second bedroom, with heating also available in the bathroom if necessary. The interior of the house is undergoing complete repainting and refurnishing to bring it bang up to date, fresh and modern, and new photos will be available soon. Once more, despite trying to amend the number from seven to four, I am having difficulty so please accept my apology.

About Linda Chaves

I am a retired teacher and artist and I have lived in Portugal over half of my life! I grew up in Hertfordshire but came out here as a teacher in 1979. I grew to love Portugal, and though I returned to the UK as a Head Teacher for a number of years, I simply missed this sunny land with deep blue skies and hospitable people. Since I retired, I have discovered two passions - travelling, and painting. I spend my days in my studio either painting or teaching art to groups of people from all over the world, mainly in the winter months. I travel as much as possible, especially to India, which is my second home! I try to get ideas from my travels, and my own experiences, to apply to my own villa, to ensure you have a super holiday!

Linda Chaves purchased this house in 2002

Why Linda Chaves chose Lousada

It's a lovely house with a super garden and a lovely outlook to the rear. It's great for chilling out by the pool, or for touring some of the fascinating historic towns all very easily accessible. My main aim is to make my guests feel at home - that everything is clean, bright, comfortable and up to date, so guests feel relaxed as soon as they arrive. I love meeting people, but I am happy to keep a low profile if people prefer privacy.

What makes this house unique

I bought the property originally because of the lovely view to the rear, the magical combination of being on the edge of a town, yet with a unique rural aspect. I love having facilities, access and services close by, hard working Portuguese families as my neighbours, and that gorgeous feeling of being somewhere way off the usual tourist track...I believe I am still to this day 'the only British woman in Lousada"!!!!

  • 4 of 5

My friend and I enjoyed our stay in Linda's villa. The house is very comfortable and well equipped and Linda could not have been a more helpful hostess - unobtrusive but always on hand to help out when needed. House very well situated for trips in teh area and the large red folder gives directions and suggestions about where to go.We had the most amazing weather and the lure of the sunbed and pool proved hard to resist. Thanks Linda for making our stay so enjoyable.

Special interest holidays:

I am an artist and teacher with a large studio for workshops, both groups and individuals, which I offer mainly off season. However, If you would like some tuition, or would simply like to spend some of your holiday in the studio, painting or drawing, please contact me.

Short courses in holiday Portuguese and personally guided day and/or half day tours are available as optional extras and tailor-made to match your interests. Linda, the owner, is passionate about scenery and has explored much of Northern Portugal. She is happy to share with you some of the best places to visit - not always in the guide books! She also speaks fluent Portuguse and can always help if necessary. Informal cookery demonstrations by local Portuguese people can also be arranged.

The coast, consisting of many long sandy beaches to the North and South of Porto, some with surfing facilities, is approximately 30/40 minutes' drive.

The nearest airport is Oporto airport, aproximately 25 minutes away. Cheap flights are frequent via Ryanair from Stansted, Bristol, Liverpool and Dublin. Car hire is essential for air travellers and this is available at the airport, best booked in advance on the Internet or by phone. The nearest ferry ports are Santander and Bilbao, about 6 - 8 hours' drive. Accessibilty is constantly improving as the north of Spain and Portugal are now covered by an excellent motorway network.

The villa is on the edge of a local small town, Lousada. The nearest city, well worth a visit, is Porto and is 30 minutes' drive or easily reached by a very cheap train service(free station parking). There are a number of other historic towns all within 30 minutes' drive and areas of great scenic and natural beauty are within easy reach. It is also the ideal place to discover the 'real' working Portugal, to get to know some of the local people, who are among the most hospitable in Europe.

Further Details:

Local shops, supermarkets, cafes and restaurants are in the near locality. Lousada has branches of the main banks, cash points and a tourist office. There are indoor and outdoor public pools and gymnasiums, with other activities such as bowling and horse-riding within the area. The many local festivals and markets can be interesting, lively and fun to visit. The 'festas' in Lousada and nearby Penafiel, which take place at the end of July and in August are particularly fascinating with stunning firework displays and good live concerts and a tremendous atmosphere.

The villa is a good base not only for visiting the Minho and Porto districts of Northern Portugal, but areas such as the 'Silver Coast', Coimbra and surrounding areas are within a day's drive for those who like to venture a little further afield.

There is a visitors' welcome file full of information about the local area with suggestions for days out etc, together with directions and suggestions for eating out, to which visitors add their own comments and suggestions, and lots of other titbits, including details about the house and emergency numbers.
