Overview

About the property

Villa near Civitella in Val di Chiana, Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy - Beautiful And Tranquil Location With Panoramic Views.

Now also featured on Alistair Sawday's 'Special Places to Stay' If you are looking for a secluded property with beautiful views, yet close to many of the attractions of Tuscany, this could be for you. On a tranquil Tuscan hilltop, a comfortable farmhouse/villa with a large pool. Wander acres of olive groves, dine al fresco beneath starry skies. Elevated above the Chiana valley this is a peaceful Tuscan farmhouse surrounded by acres of olive groves. The old building had been left to ruin, but a careful restoration transformed its fortunes; a new stone facade, terracotta floors and beamed ceilings blend tradition with solid modern comfort. Through the wooden arched doors interiors are cosy and rustic. Plump sofas surround an open fire, while checked curtains add a touch of English country style. A long pine table is great for sociable dinners in the kitchen, or you can eat al fresco beneath the pergola or impressively starry skies. Good sized bedrooms are simple and fresh; most have garden views and one has an en-suite shower room. A terracotta terrace with a barbecue and outdoor seats frame the house, and there's a gorgeous swimming pool just beyond. Walks from the door head through olives, chestnut and oak woods where you might spot wild boar, foxes and porcupines. The house is in beautiful countryside close to the historic village of Civitella and superbly located for art and culture and all the historic towns and villages of Tuscany and Umbria. Florence is about 1 hour away, Siena and Cortona about 50 minutes, whilst Perugia and Assisi are within easy reach.

A new pool heater is being installed for the 2016 season. It will be operational from Easter, but the pool is normally open from mid-May, however it can be made available earlier on request.

Some guest comments but also see Reviews section) "...so busy since returning that I've not had the chance to thank you for letting us have such a glorious week at La Tartaruga. You have a wonderful place in the hills with such terrific views and challenging walks. (May 2013) We had a great time at the villa, and enjoyed the pool very much. It was all kept in excellent order by the people who came in at various times to do the pool, garden aand the sheets/towels - all very friendly and I think we managed to communciate despite our total lack of Italian. They were very quick to get the sun umbrella for the pool area repaired. We would certainly recommend the villa to friends. (September 2013) We left your lovely house yesterday morning after a wonderful week. All went well and we left the house as we found it. During the week we have met your friendly gardener and the man who came to check if everything was OK. (July 2013) Thank you for your email, we had the most fabulours week, thank you so much! We were so lucky with the weather, it was glorious and added to the enjoyment of the stunning scenery, etc. (April 2013)

About David Evans

David Evans and his wife Edwina bought this property in spring 2006. Whilst our home remains near Winchester in the South of England we have spent many happy times at La Tartaruga, and it is very much our second home. We have three grown up daughters who live and work in London, but who love coming to Tuscany with their young families.

David Evans purchased this villa in 2006

Why David Evans chose Cortona area

We first came to Tuscany when our children were young and loved the area with its old hill towns and glorious landscapes. When we started looking in 2005 we decided that this area was very well placed for all the attractions of Tuscany and Umbria, and Arezzo itself is a delightful local town. When we first saw the house it was obvious that this was the house for us. A huge reconstruction from a ruined farmhouse was almost complete, so there would be very little for us to do, and the views were stunning. We also loved its quiet location which is completely private, although it is close to Civitella and Monte San Savino for shopping and restaurants. There are so many towns within an hour's drive, including Siena and Florence which we never tire of visiting.

What makes this villa unique

Often when we go to Italy we like to do nothing more than relax in the sunshine and use the pool. We love to walk up into Civitella and have a drink in the square enjoying the lovely views, and then maybe go for a meal in of the restaurants there, or sit outside for a pizza or pasta in the square with great views over the valley? Florence is an easy trip by car or train. Another favourite is Arezzo where, after a little shopping, or a visit to the wonderful Piero della Francesca frescoes, we like to sit at one of the bars in the beautiful piazza with a beer or aperitif and watch the world go by. Our children also love coming to the house with husbands and friends and we often have a houseful which is great fun. We find La Tartaruga a very special place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

'We had a lovely time and how special we found the area. Lake Trasimeno - great fun for kids - we did pedalos - and lake boat trip. Would be lovely for cycling/walking. Great fun lying on the sunloungers at night and star gazing and walking up the drive wildlife spotting - deer/wild boar/fox cubs etc - children won't forget that in a hurry. The house was beautifully equipped - the pool is superb - great to have such a large one. The house really is beautiful.' (Baynes - July 2007).

'Very comfortably furnished with those little extra items that make a stay more enjoyable and comfortable. The location is superb - so quiet and peaceful with fantastic views from all aspects and certainly a good area for walking.' (Cotton - August 2007).

'We all had a wonderful time, the house, weather, countryside, food and wine couldn't have been more perfect. The children had a great time exploring in the many acres of ground surrounding the house.' (Melrose - July 2008).

I’ve been so busy since returning that I’ve not had the chance to thank you for letting us have such a glorious week at La Tartaruga. You have a wonderful place in the hills with such terrific views and challenging walks; John, Felicity and I were kept on our toes with the walk to Civitella (what a beautiful yet tragic village). (May 2013)

We had a great time at the villa, and enjoyed the pool very much. It was all kept in excellent order by the people who came in at various times to do the pool, garden and the sheets/towels - all very friendly and I think we managed to communicate despite our total lack of Italian. They were very quick to get the sun umbrella for the pool area repaired - we gathered that they had found it broken when preparing the villa for our arrival. We would certainly recommend the villa to friends. (September 2013)

We left your lovely house yesterday morning after a wonderful week. All went well and we left the house as we found it. During the week we have met your friendly gardner and the man who came to check if everything was ok. (July 2013)

Tuscan Countryside Perfection

  • 5 of 5

A truly delightful property that suited our extended family very well. The house and grounds are lovely and made for a great base in Tuscany.

The property is ideal for people who want to spend time at the house and do some day trips to Siena, Florence, etc. (both are 1-1.5 hours away by the time you get there, park, etc.). The layout of bedrooms and bathrooms make it great for one larger famliyor for friends/families traveling together.

The owner was responsive to our questions and did everything to try and make our stay go as smoothly as possible.

Beautiful peaceful villa in glorious surroundings

  • 5 of 5

Delightful villa set in glorious countryside surrounded by olive trees. Our family 5 adults and 2 children aged 9 and 4 could not have been happier. The villa was simply but very well equipped and we felt relaxed as soon as we arrived which was just what we all needed.

The pool was great and the little boys needed no other entertainment.

Although there was easy access to the big Tuscan cities most of which we had seen before we were all happy to just enjoy the surroundings. The local vineyard provided excellent wine to accompany our home cooked and barbecued meals.

We would highly recommend this villa for a relaxed comfortable family holiday.

Our daughter said she could have stayed for several more weeks.

A lovely property in a beautifully quiet spot

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted with the lovely house, clean and well equipped and in a truly peaceful location. It is also well placed for visiting the top tourist destinations in the area.

Any issues we had (eg. the power was turned off for emergency works in the local village) were dealt with quickly and efficiently by the owner.

We would certainly recommend this property as a very comfortable base for visiting Tuscany and, staying there in June, we were treated to the amazing nightly spectacular of the fireflies!

Excellent stay at La Tartaruga

  • 5 of 5

Lovely high quality property exactly as described. Gift of local olive oil and bottle of prosecco nice touch on arrival. Huge pool maintained at a steady 75 degrees F all week. Well equipped house with everything you need for the holiday. We had a few problems getting the TV to work reliably but the internet connection is very good and i-player compensated. Owner responded quickly to any questions we asked. If you want some rural peace this is the place. Cuckoo sang all week, deer and wild boar family in the garden on one occasion. Final access drive might be a bit rough and narrow in places if you have a wide or low slung car, our land rover loved it.

Local area is great, visited Siena, Arezzo, Montepulciano all close and ,a bit further away, Pisa. Owner provided good local information. Excellent Coop hypermarket in Arezzo and good Coop and minimarket in nearby Monte San Savino. La Terrasse restaurant in Monte San Savino highly recommended by owner and was tremendous quality and value. Make that a must. Blu Notte pizzeria in Albergo we can't recommend, unhelpful surly staff, but good pizze can be obtained everywhere.

Only three of us but plenty of room for up to 8 people. Hopefully we'll get a chance to return in the near future.

Perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed an excellent family holiday at La Tartaruga this summer. We are a family of six, two adults and four boys ranging in age from 11 to 17. The house is well equipped, well furnished and we fitted in very well – we found it very homely. The kitchen is fine for a holiday and we used the BBQ. The location is just great with stunning views and nothing much else to disturb you. The garden is also well kept.

We made good use of the pool, played a lot of games and watched some DVDs we’d brought. The wifi was also a must for the boys but we did managed to restrict them!

We ate out locally a few times which was easy and cheap. We visited Sienna (reasonably short drive), St Gimignano (bit further), Florence (easy train journey from Arezzo) and Arezzo. The one regret was we only went to Arezzo on the last day and found it to be beautiful – wish we’d discovered that sooner as we’d have gone more than once.

I would recommend this villa if you like private, self-contained family holidays.

A well equipped, comfortable villa.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in La Tartaruga with our teenage boys and friends also with teenagers. The villa is roomy, well equipped and set in a beautiful location in the Tuscan hills. There are plenty of options for day trips, shopping and eating out but it was good to get back to the peace & quiet of the villa with large pool. The remoteness might unnerve some people but for country folk like us it was perfect. The last 0.5 mile on a dirt track does make you wonder where you are going but it is worth it. The directions we were given were spot on. Lots of helpful tips available of where to eat and what to do make life a bit easier. There is UK TV and Wifi to keep you connected but this is a place to get disconnected for a while. Early risers might catch sight of a deer in the garden. The following week that we spent in busy, hot Florence, Lucca and Pisa was memorable but I know where I would rather have been.
