About Richard Watson

I am a solicitor in private practice living in Hertfordshire. I first began letting a holiday home in the Lake District in 2001.

Armed with that experience, we set about achieving a similar four star standard in Italy. It was important to make sure there were new, comfortable beds and a well-equipped kitchen such as we would want for ourselves.

I am interested in old properties and enjoy travelling within Europe. It is always a pleasure to arrive at Naples Airport and drive down to Laureana. In the summer there may be people enjoying live music in the little piazza.

Outside the summer months the area has a character of its own. I have swum in the sea in October. In winter we can enjoy a meal in front of an open fire in a local pizzeria, or see the sights when they are quiet.

Richard Watson purchased this villa in 2006

Why Richard Watson chose Cilento

Friends had bought and restored a villa in the next village. When we visited for the first time we were struck by the views across the Bay of Salerno and the friendliness of the locals. The narrow street on which the property stands is traffic-free meaning that you can have the French doors open onto the balconies.

Cliento is not overwhelmed by tourists. The local food and wine, together with the climate, are exceptional. There is something about enjoying a leisurely Sunday lunch sitting at long tables outside in the sunshine that is the essence of an Italian holiday.

On our second visit we began to look at properties, not knowing exactly what we were looking for. On the last day a local cafe owner enthused about a house for sale Laureana. Within minutes of arriving and walking through the huge front doors up to the first floor, to be met with the stunning views across to Amalfi and Capri, the search was over.

What makes this villa unique

It is fascinating to think of the events that have taken place in and around this and the other historic houses and palazzi in Laureana.

We love the large airy rooms with high ceilings and the ease with which the terrace can be accessed from the kitchen and sitting room. We have spent a small fortune on restoring and updating the house over the years so that it combines modern amenities with character.

Although Laureana is in a quiet location it is within easy reach of Agropoli with its old harbour and Saracen castle, and excellent beaches. The Cilento National Park is the largest in Italy and is dotted with historic villages. It is also a comfortable drive or train journey to Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the remarkable early Greco-Roman site at Paestum is less than half an hour away

Guestbook comments from the owner

We loved the house and the upstairs terrace in particular and had most of our meals on the terrace, appreciating that wonderful view.

Thank you very much for your holiday house and for giving us an opportunity to discover a very beautiful area.
