Stylish, comfortable apartment in charming Lenno, 2 minute stroll to Lake

Updated: 21-Oct-2016
Comfortable, stylish apartment, perfect for couple, only 2 minutes walk to Lake, in charming village of Lenno. With secure, private parking.

Our bright, modern and comfortable apartment is within an easy 200 metre stroll of the lake, a short 2 minute walkl takes you down a cobbled lane to the Lake side. This is one of the most historic, stunning and charming locations in Northern Italy. Our 1st floor apartment is located within a period villa recently completely refurbished. It has a tastefully styled bedroom and a very comfortable open plan living room, both of which lead out via French doors onto a large, sunny, south facing private balcony - perfect for having breakfast, relaxing, sunbathing or alfresco dining. The living room is also stylish and comfortable, and very well equipped, with satellite TV, the English freeview channels, a DVD player, and an Ipod dock. A large and varied collection of DVDs is available, should you like to relax in the evening with a movie or two. The modern, fully equipped kitchen runs along one wall, and is perfect for those keen to try out their cooking skills in Italian cuisine, using the fresh ingredients sourced locally. The spotlessly clean bathroom is spacious and bright with walk-in shower, bidet, toilet, etc.

Lenno is a quite select, charming village, and reputed to be one of the sunniest locations on the Lake. It produces its own local olive oil. It's not commercialised or touristy and retains is local Italian character, with a historic village piazza and medieval church. The lake front at Lenno is a gem, with its charming promenade, stately villas, quaint village square, and selection of restaurants and cafes - and of course the most spectacular picture postcard views.

Lenno is also unique in having its beautiful little promenade, with its four or five cafes and restaurants, perfect for strolling on a summer's evening or that cappuccino first thing in the morning. The promenade leads to a quaint 1920s style ferry terminal from with you can travel around the Lake. The village also has excellent amenities including a medium sized, well stocked supermarket, very convenient to the apartment. A Bike hire shop, should you wish to give the car a holiday. Many of the local cafes offer free wifi, and there are several well recommended restaurants within walking distance of the apartment.

Lenno has a weekly Tuesday morning market, conveniently located along the promenade, selling local produce, fish, hams, meat, cheeses, fruit and vegetables, clothes and other goods. An interesting way to spend a morning and sample the real Italy. Lenno also has a stylish Lido with man made sandy beach, and there are two small shingle public beaches near the promenade. Exploring Lake Como by ferry couldn’t be easier from Lenno's own little ferry terminal and a day long 'Centre of the Lake' pass is available, allowing convenient travel to other attractive lakeside villages such as Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio.

Within walking distance of the apartment is the famous garden of the Villa Balbianello, it featured in a James Bond movie and a few miles from Lenno also can be found the stunning Villa Carlotta a stately home with sub-tropical gardens.

To ensure that you will have a trouble free stay in our apartment, when you arrive, you will be met by a friend who lives nearby. You will be given the apartment keys, and shown how everything in the apartment works, which may be a little different to the UK - access, electronic gates, parking, electricity/gas, heating, using the cooker, washing machine, etc and you will be given a local number should you have any questions. We hope this is helpful and will make your holiday enjoyable. We also leave a information file in the apartment for guests, providing local information, details on ferry and bus timetables, favourite local sights, day trips, details of restaurants and cafes, etc. The apartment is in a recently refurbished old villa so the rooms are modern, very bright and comfortable. In summer we use the sunny south facing balcony as additional outdoor room for relaxing and reading. It is private with views of a historic villa and the grounds of a medieval monastry. The apartment is in an easily accessible location within walking distance of all village amenities, not up a hill or on a slope.

For those hiring a car, the apartment has its own private, secure car parking space at the front of the villa located inside electronic gates, a remote control is provided.

For guests we provide an Internet laptop 'dongle' which can be easily topped up in the TIM (ie equivalent of BT) shop in nearby Mennaggio. This is what we use in the apartment, but for the price of a coffee in the Il Golfo cafe on the Lenno promenade, their is excellent, free wifi.

Towels and bed linen are all included. If staying for 2 weeks extra towels and bed linen will be provided. The property is thoroughly cleaned and inspected between each guest's stay.

With careful planning you can travel to the apartment from Milan's airports using local public transport, making car hire an advantage but not absolutely essential. Public transport using bus, rail and ferry connections are good in the Lake Como area.

Lugano in Switzerland is only three quarters of an hour away by car, or an hour by local bus from Menaggio.

About the Owner

We are Rhoda and Fred, a recently, early retired, professional couple. We both worked in Education. We have travelled a lot in Europe. We fell completely in love with Italy about 8 years ago, particularly the area around Lake Como. It is historic, full of character, very beautiful, very varied and with stunning, spectacular views. When an opportunity arose to buy an apartment in Lenno, close to the lake shore, we jumped at it. What appealed to us most, besides the sheer beauty of the whole area, was the history and character of Lake Como. There is such a variety of things to do, Lake activities from swimming to sailing, walks along the Greenway on the lakeside, or in the hills - or mountains, exploring gardens, historic villas or the many charming villages along the lake shore.

In summer there is a progmamme of very varied events around the Lake from the grand villas that host classical music evenings to the local villages that provide Craft Fairs. Fireworks displays are a favourite Italian pastime. And of course there's always excellent cuisine and wine Above all a quality of life where you are able to take things at an Italian pace, Lake Como still takes a two and a half hour lunch break!

Lovely, comfortable apartment

  • 4 of 5

We really relaxed and enjoyed our stay in this comfortable apartment. Balcony doors at your bedroom and living area make it ideal to enjoy the sunny weather. You can walk easily to the lake nearby, bus and to the nearby village. We actually went back for another period of time after staying in a disappointing apartment in a different village. Highly recommended.

Comfortable, well-equipped, and well located apartment

  • 4 of 5

We'd stayed in Lenno before, a few years ago, and wanted to go back to the same area. This apartment was exactly what we needed. Internally it was clean and well-equipped. it was bright without getting overheated in the sun. We didn't cook much, there were too many nice restaurants in the area, but the kitchen seemed to have everything we would have wanted. The bed was comfortable, with adequate space for clothes and suitcases.

Having a balcony was a nice extra, and although there's no view of the lake it was a pleasant place to have breakfast or an afternoon drink. Despite being in a small apartment block we were not disturbed by noise from neighbours. There is private parking, which was useful, we barely touched the car for the whole week, it was easier and more fun to take the boats around the lake. Internet access was provided by a 3G USB "dongle" which didn't work with my tablet, so do check that before going.

Lenno centre was about 10 minutes walk, either along a leafy lane or down the main road past the small supermarket. There's a boat landing stage from where it's easy to get to Como, Bellagio, etc. I'd certainly recommend that rather than taking a car. Bellagio is very touristy, of course, but well with a trip for lunch and a walk, and Varenna is a nice place to pause for an ice cream. The fast boat to Como certainly makes it worth visiting for a day trip, just for shopping and lunch. It's a small town, nothing very special but pleasant, and Milan is only a short hop by train from there.

Of the restaurants we liked Trattoria Santo Stefano the best, and ate there twice. We remembered it from our last stay, it seems to have gone a bit more upmarket, so even better than before. Albergo Plinio, just round the corner, was also very good. One dull wet evening when other places were closed we went to Pizzeria Ranch. It was a decent local pizzeria, nothing fancy but good pizza and friendly people. Despite our very basic Italian we had no problem being understood, and most places had some English-speaking staff. We tried to eat at the Lido, but could never work out if it was open. It was either very busy with what seemed like private parties (weddings), or deserted, but either way there were no signs to indicate if guests were welcome or not, so we gave up on it. There are other bars where you can enjoy an evening cocktail.

We'd very happily go back, I'd recommend the apartment to any couple wanting a comfortable stay in Lenno.

Homely apartment in a stunning location.

  • 5 of 5

We really loved our stay in Rhoda and Fred's apartment in Lenno. It was spotlessly clean on arrival and truly does have everything you need- washing machine, iron, hairdryer and a full kitchen of cooking utensils. You can tell it is a second home for the hosts as everything is of the highest quality. The bed is more comfortable than my own. The plants on the balcony were in full bloom during our stay and we really enjoyed sitting outside for breakfast and in the evenings with a glass of wine. The DVD collection also deserves a shout out. The selection is impressive and I enjoyed re-watching some of my all-time favourite movies.

There is a supermarket practically on the doorstep and the lake is only a few minutes away so it was extremely convenient. Lenno is a lovely spot and whilst it is a great place to unwind, there is plenty to do and see should you wish to explore. You don’t even need to do any research before you go as the apartment is full of useful information, leaflets, guidebooks and recommendations.

We filled our days alternating between sightseeing and lounging on a nearby private beach, which you paid a small entrance fee to access. Despite visiting in June it was very quiet here and we were able to have this stretch of the lake almost to ourselves for swimming. Out and about we visited Bellagio and Varenna on a great value one day boat ticket which was valid for the entire central part of the lake. Being out cruising on the lake was lovely in itself and definitely something we would recommend. We enjoyed exploring Bellagio and whilst the hustle and bustle of the main thoroughfare was fun, the sleepy fishing village of Pescallo was the highlight for us. Varenna was equally enchanting and we’d definitely recommend meandering your way up to the castle and taking yourself right to the top for the views. The scenery is what makes Lake Como very special and we were treated to more spectacular vistas on our visit to Villa del Balbianello. The gardens here are beautifully maintained and we found the tour of the house really interesting, it gave us a real insight into the previous owner who was an adventurer, an explorer and a real character by all accounts.

One week in Lenno was just not enough. We will be returning and we would not hesitate in booking this apartment for part two of our Lenno adventure. To be continued... Louise & Nick

Owner's Response: Nick and Louise were perfect guests and like ourselves have fallen in love with Lenno and beautiful Lake Como. They have appreciated the care and attention that we have taken in furnishing our apartment as a second home and making it as comfortable as possible for our guests. They made the most of their stay in what we consider to be Lake Como's jewel. They are welcome back any time.

Should Have Gone For Two Weeks ...

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a delightful week sampling the food, the scenery and the culture of this stunning Italian region. Lake Como and the surrounding mountains are spectacular. The picturesque towns and villages dotted along the lakeshore are easily accessible either by road or by water from Lenno. Rhoda and Fred’s apartment was the ideal base from which to explore the area, being just a short walk from the ferry terminal opposite Hotel Lenno.

As other reviewers have said, the place is well kitted out with cooking equipment so you can cater for yourselves if you wish. Having said that, we really loved walking down to the promenade each evening and doing that most Italian of things: having a couple of drinks and a satisfying meal while watching the world go by.

Menaggio, a charming small town just 10 minutes up the road, is well worth visiting at the beginning of your stay so you can visit the tourist office and get up-to-date information about all the local events going on. While we were there we attended an intimate classical soirée in a grand hotel, a lively open-air tango concert in the town square and meandered around the many artisanal and vintage goods stalls at the local craft fair.

The apartment itself is like a home away from home, literally, because Fred and Rhoda stay there regularly themselves. Their tasteful decorative touches make you feel relaxed and well catered for from the minute you walk in the front door. And the following morning, when you step out onto the generously sized balcony to enjoy coffee and fresh croissants from the in-store bakery round the corner (you need to get there early before they’re gone, mind), you’ll already be kicking yourself that you haven’t booked two weeks instead of just one. I know we did.

Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was our 4th visit to this lovely apartment - which probably speaks for itself!

Lenno is the perfect location for exploring the area. The ferry stop is just 10 minutes walk away, with regular ferries to the mid section of the lake - Menaggio, Bellagio and, my favourite, Varenna. We also enjoy visiting Como itself - a slow ferry journey there to view all the beautiful villages from the water; a perfect pizza at Del Duca in Piazza Mazzini; a glass or two of prosecco; and then the bus home - it takes about an hour and the bus stops just 2 minutes from the apartment.

Villa del Balbianello in Lenno itself is well worth seeing - you can walk from the village or get a water taxi. This time we even managed to squeeze in a day relaxing at the Lido - again in Lenno. There's also a weekly market on Tuesday morning - worth browsing around if only for the fab food.

If you fancy doing a bit of cooking, you'll definitely have all you need at hand, either from the market or from the supermarket just a few minutes walk away. The apartment is well equipped and being able to dine on the balcony, whether it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner is just lovely. The interior is cool, comfortable and tastefully decorated. And should you get a less than perfect evening weatherwise, there's a great selection of DVDs to choose from (and UK satellite channels).

We really feel like part of the community here and the property manager, Rosalina, is friendly and welcoming.

Although, feasible to get to using public transport, if you are driving, the gated car park gives you peace of mind, knowing you don't have to search for a space or feed a parking meter.

We still haven't had enough of this place - so will be back again!

A place to come home to

  • 4 of 5

It was a great pleasure for us to come back to the apartment this year after a fabulous two weeks last summer. Once again it provided us with the ideal base for exploring the local area, for enjoying the many pleasures the lake and surrounding area have to offer and for returning to our favourite welcoming local bars and restaurants. We'll be back!

From the Owner

We bought our property about 8 years ago. We choose Lenno in particular because it has genuine Italian character, excellent amenities and it is not touristy. Lenno has an unique character and location. It has it's own little bay, promenade, supermarket and piazza with a handful of excellent coffee bars and restaurants. The best ice cream parlour in the area is found here. There is a stylish lido, places to chill with an aperitif or dine in the evening. Nearby a local shingle beach. Unlike many of the other villlages it has it's own little ferry port which makes it so easy to travel up and down the lake exploring other villages close by and on the other side of the lake. Taking the ferry is a lovely way to visit the town of Como, do a bit of shopping, and try to spot George Clooney's villa on route

Our apartment is situated a couple of minutes walk from the lakeside, where there's a small secluded shingle beach for swimming. Or if you prefer, with a 10 minute easy walk you can reach a charming little park at Ossucio where you can relax, sunbathe or swim. There's an excellent, inexpensive cafe there with free wifi also selling drinks, snacks, lunch and of course ice cream. Alternatively a 10 walk will take to the Lido at Lenno where you can sunbathe, swim or have a drink at the bar. From the apartment it is also a very easy 10 minute walk to Lenno's charming village square, which is right on the Lake. Lenno has its own beautiful little promenade on the Lakeside, lovely for a morning stroll, that early cappucino or Prosecco or light lunch in one of the cafes there overlooking the lake. A view to take your breath away.

For the energetic boat hire is available a 5 minute walk away, exploring the Lake by boat is ideal for sightseeing, and many of the most beautiful historic villas are best seen from the Lake. Water sking or even a spot of fishing are avaiable. Walking is also a favourite activity in the Lenno area, from a gentle stroll along the lakeside Greenway to easy walking in the surrounding mountains. Lenno is situated on a small bay, and its villas, views and location are gorgeous, perfect for that evening walk - the passagiatta. In fact Lenno promenade offers the most breath taking panoramic views of the lake and mountains. Stunning.

Nearest airports, 1 hour 15 minutes to Milan Malpensa or Linate airports, or 1 hour and 45 mins to Bergamo by car. But car hire is not absolutely essential, provided arrival and departure times are planned, eg landing by lunch time and departing mid afternoon would work. There are shuttle buses from all the airports to Milan Central Railway station and rail connections on to Como city, and the apartment can be reached by public transport as is on the bus and ferry routes on the lake. There is a regular ferry or bus service from Como.

Menaggio 10Km.

Como 25Km.

Swiss border 30Km.

Villa Carlotta 5Km.

Our apartment’s location provides ample opportunity to explore all parts of the lake and mountains. Bellagio, the jewel in the crown of the entire Lake area where you can shop for designer wear, silk, art or leather is only a short ferry journey away. Como, with all its pretty promenades, cathedrals, busy shops and market days is only 30 minutes away by scenic drive.

Further Details:

Close to the apartment is the little ferry stop at Lenno, here the ferry will zig-zag up and down the lake, stopping at towns and villages on the way. You can even take the ferry for a day’s shopping or sightseeing visit to Como. The local bus stops nearby, it circles the lake and so will drop you off at any of the villages along the way. If you want to explore by car the apartment has its own private secure parking facility within the gated garden area.

Lenno and nearby villages offer some of the best cuisine of the region including local lake fish and pasta dishes, of course!

After your evening meal enjoy a romantic stroll along the lake promenade in Lenno, right on the waters edge.

For garden lovers four of the most famous and beautiful are located very close-by, Villa Balbianello is only a 15 minute walk away, while Villa Carlotta is just 5 minutes down the road by car and the gardens of Villa Meltzi and Monastir are only 20 minutes away by ferry.

There is simply so much to see and do in the area, it is steeped in history and culture. Particularly throughout the summer when there are numerous events, concerts, exhibitions - and not forgetting the fireworks displays! Or if your interests stretch eg to hill walking, photography, cookery or painting these are readily available throughout the lake area. If shopping is a must then Como is 30 minutes away and for something entirely different, a 45 minute drive will take you to Lugano, in Switzerland via some of the most spectacular mountain scenery – but don’t forget your passport!
