Delightful Umbrian villa, majestic view of Todi, private pool, wifi (sleeps 6-7)

Updated: 14-Nov-2016
Blissfully peaceful setting on wooded hillside overlooking the Tiber valley

Relax by the private pool, take one of many scenic walks through the wooded countryside, absorb Italian culture, savour Umbria's food laced with truffles and its wines, attend cultural festivals, admire the paintings of Il Perugino and other masters, learn the language - or just lose yourself in the local village feasts known as sagre. You can do it all at Le Vigne.

This well-appointed villa, converted from a disused stable and tobacco-drying shed, stands on an acre of land on a quiet wooded hillside, with a gorgeous vista of the Tiber valley, the Monti Martani and the ancient town of Todi, one of central Italy's loveliest spots. It has its own enclosed garden, swimming pool and olive grove. It is furnished with period pieces and equipped with modern facilities and wifi. All bedrooms have ceiling fans, and the windows are fitted with mosquito nets and shutters.

The only other house in shouting distance is a 15th-century tower that is home to the discreet owners.

Cleaning once a week (Saturdays) is included in the rent.

There is excellent country walking along quiet gravel roads or woodland paths. The land is dotted with towns and villages that are architectural gems. The cities or Orvieto and Perugia, the pilgrimage shrine of Assisi, the Roman ruins of Carsulae and much more are within easy reach.

Italian language and cooking courses are available in Todi.

Le Vigne is half an hour away from Perugia's San Francesco d'Assisi airport, which is now served by Alitalia (from Rome), Ryanair (from London, Brussels and Dusseldorf) and by Lufthansa (from Munich).

About the Owner

Luciano and Maria Pia. Luciano is a retired banker who spent many years in North and South America and the Far East. Maria Pia is a retired lawyer. They restored a nearby historical building with a medieval tower, "Torre Angelina", which has become their summer residence. They then restored "Le Vigne", a former tobacco drying-shed, belonging to the same estate. Luciano and Maria Pia are happy to meet guests and provide information about places to visit, restaurants etc. and extend assistance in case of need. There is an intercom line connecting the two houses which are some 100 meters away from each other.

Had a wonderful 2 week stay, really enjojed the villa and pool, such lovely views and pretty places to visit. The weather was not as reliable as in the past but cloudy weather made a day break in Rome all more enjoyable. As always loved Florence and Cetona, Orvieto well worth a visit. Definitely worth coming back

Delightful country house in beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

The photos of the house don't really do it justice. Its airier and more spacious than it appears. The setting is perfect-peace and quiet after the hustle and bustle of the local tourist towns. The owners are nearby and managed to be helpful without over doing it. We loved it.

Fantastic comfortable home in an ideal rural spot

  • 5 of 5

le vigne has it all! It's on a hill and rural which means fantastic views, especially of the town of Todi at sunset, and lots of wildlife, peace, and tranquility. A small olive grove in the garden is home to cicadas that serenade meals out on the patio, and the sunflower fields around the property give a feeling of rural seclusion. A short car journey though gets you to Todi, with its restaurants and an excellent supermarket. The villa is very comfortable and furnished like a cared for home. The local restaurant at cecanibi is recommended for simple dishes and very reasonable prices, and it's walkable from the villa. All in, this is a great base to explore an extraordinarily pretty part of Italy, and the owners Luciano and Maria Pia are charming, helpful, and kind hosts. Highly recommended!

Outstanding location, thoroughly efficient communications and attention, everything worked for us.

  • 5 of 5

What a superb location, and so close to Todi, a real gem.

The Villa worked extremely well for us and provided an excellent base for visiting some of the outstanding sights in the area.

The facilities, the pool and gardens were ideal for lazy days, and Todi outstanding for terrace top eating out.

Having been to other parts of Italy previously, we found this part of Umbria very unspoiled and not too busy, exactly what we were looking for.

Beautiful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for welcoming us to Le Vigne and for ensuring we were comfortable and well settled in. We loved the house and the pool, which we swam in every day. We enjoyed visiting Todi (thank you for showing us the cable car up to the town), and seeing it each day perched so perfectly on its hill, with the sun and clouds changing it from light to shade. We visited several nearby hill towns and had longer trips to Orvieto, Assisi and Lake Trasimeno.. We also managed to do a fair amount of lazing around, reading and lizard-watching! Thank you again.

Charming villa with a spectacular view

  • 5 of 5

Le Vigne is a magical Umbrian villa which I hope to return to again and again. It is situated in the middle of farmers' fields with only the owners' house close-by. The view of Todi, from under the pergola where we ate our meals, is spectacular. We loved taking long walks through the rolling countryside passing vineyards and olive groves and enjoying the beautiful vistas of hilltop villages. On a wander up the hill to nearby tiny Cecanibbi, where Hannibal once sought refuge, we discovered a small family run restaurant that serves delicious pizzas to the locals. The owners, Maria Pia and Luciano are charming and helpful hosts. The house is clean and comfortable and suited us perfectly. There is a lovely pool that opens every June and we look forward to using it when we return for a summer visit. Nearby hilltop Todi is magical and when we wanted to explore further afield there are several picturesque mountaintop villages nearby that are accessible by car. We enjoyed a day trip to the see the Basilica and Cathedral at Assisi. But, in the end, it was relaxing at this charming, peaceful property with it's wonderful hillside views that really made for a wonderful holiday and are happy to recommend Le Vigne to anyone.
