About the Owner

Back in 2004 Neil and I swapped our busy, city-based lives in the UK for rural bliss in southern Spain and feel much happier and healthier as a result. Looking after people on holiday is refreshing and fun and we're loving having the opportunity to explore our wonderful adopted country.

A relaxing haven of tranquility.

  • 5 of 5

We are missing Casa Verde and sleepy Alhama already! Neil and Pam are excellent hosts and always on hand if you need them. The welcome pack was a kind gesture and airport pick-up useful. This rustic townhouse is beautifully decorated with Moorish influences, colours and furniture. The shower was AWESOME and the beds REALLY comfortable. The weather was unusually hot during our stay but the house was cool with ceiling fans and the plunge pool was a treat! The locals are so friendly, the bars all providing exquisite, free tapas with every drink and the scenery make this town so appealing. The views of mountains and of the gorge, truly stunning! The local, municipal pool had a fantastic atmosphere with a bar, pool tables, table tennis, tennis courts etc..Great for children and adults alike.Casa Verde is so well equipped with everything you could possibly need. We would recommend this place to all our friends..... Truly wonderful!

Boho-chic and spotless!

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely loved staying at this beautiful house in Alhama. Its boho-chic interiors were wonderful and tasteful. You could feel the love and energy that had been invested in the house by its owners. Very importantly, the place was spotless with great amenities and full supply of hot water and gas. It was very easy to stay here and the owners were wonderful in making sure all our needs were met. Couldn't recommend this place highly enough.

Casa verde is beautiful, felt like home immediately. Lovely touches like a bottle of wine and a few nibbles on arrival along with Pam and Neil's wealth of local knowledge were just the ticket and meant that we got the very most out of our stay. Can't recommend enough, even in the depths of Feb!

A must

  • 4 of 5

Casa Verde is aesthetically very pleasing and well equipped. 2 wood burners and a constant supply of wood from Pam and Neil ensured our evenings were very cosy.(It was the coldest spell for 40 years) Bright sunny days meant we could explore the joys of Alhama and its environs? Stunning scenery and masses of history not to be missed.

Wonderful house in an amazing location!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Casa Verde after an easy journey from the UK to find a wonderful welcome from the owners Pam and Neil and an unexpected supply of provisions including milk, cheese, bread, coffee and a bottle of the delicious local wine to greet us! This immaculate house was even better than described, and has been restored and decorated in a Spanish/morrocan style which is charming and homely in equal measures. The beds were extremely comfortable in every bedroom and we made full use of both the upstairs and downstairs living rooms. The kitchen is extremely well stocked, the dishwasher was essential with 7 of us staying there, and it had an amazing store cupboard of herbs, spices and other essentials. My favourite part however was enjoying breakfast everyday on the pretty patio outside! A real home from home!

The house is ideally situated within the town with easy walking access to the local supermarkets and to the lively bars in the town square, where we spent quite a few hours watching the world go by whilst enjoying the local beverages and sampling the free, yes that's right!, free tapas that accompanies them!

There are many walks around the local area and I would definitely recommend the one through the spectacular gorge, though maybe not in the midday sun! If you have a hire car then Alhama is ideally located for exploring this stunning region of Spain further. Something we intend to do on our return visit which we are hoping to do very soon.

Location

From the Owner

We fell in love with the rugged wildness of the mountains around Alhama then we fell in love with the charms of this lively, beautiful and relaxing little town. The coast and great cities are close by but Alhama feels tucked away from all that hustle and bustle.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

We can put you in touch with people locally who offer cookery classes, activity holidays, horse-riding, hire of bikes, info on local walks/hikes, cycling tours.

Coast/Beach:

We are one hour's drive from Torre del Mar and one hour 10 mins from Malaga. The Costa Tropical is one hour's drive where you can visit the historical seaside towns of Nerja, La Herradura and Almunecar. All the usual water sports including wind-surfing, sailing, para-gliding and scuba diving are very popular from La Herradura in particular. The towns are attractive and have traditional architecture, old barrios with flower laden balconies and twisting cobbled lanes and lots of restaurants.

Travel:

Granada airport is a very easy 45 mins drive. Malaga airport is also straightforward and about 1 hour 20 mins drive. We have comprehensive directions. We offer airport pick-up as well so let us know if you don't fancy doing any driving.

Granada centre is 50 mins and there's plenty of underground parking there. Also, there are three buses a day to Granada -very convenient, cheap and takes the stress out of driving!

Sevilla and Cordoba are both an easy two hour drive.

Distances:

2 mins from local supermarket.

10 mins from outdoor swimming.

50 mins to Granada (there's a bus service too).

20 mins to beautiful Lake Bermajales for picnics and swimming.

10 mins to Natural Park of Tejada, Alhama and Almijara.

40 mins to Loja (lovely town, great shopping).

1 hour to Montefrio.

1 hour to Antequera.

1 hour to Archidona.

1 hour 20 mins to Nerja (best local seaside resorts).

1 hour 10 mins to Malaga.

2 hours to Sevilla.

1 hour to Lake Iznajar.

2 hours to Cordoba.

Further Details:

Casa Verde has a great little supermarket two mins walk away. Five minutes away, the centre of Alhama has banks, shops, bars and restaurants. There's a busy market with local crafts, fruit, veg, plants, flowers, clothes, etc every Friday.

Alhama de Granada, in the fertile heart of the Poniente Granadino in Southern Andalucia, is the perfect holiday destination. The town of Alhama offers history dating from Roman times through Moorish reign and up to modern days. Alhama is very attractive, traditional, bustling and precariously positioned running along the edge of an enormous limestone gorge, Los Tajos. Along the bottom of the gorge run the Rio Alhama. Nearby, hot springs gurgle into four thermal pools next to the Rio Alhama. The town has grand, imposing Medieval architecture and lively bars surrounding attractive squares. Surrounding Alhama are soft, pastel shaded rolling hills, attractive small villages and stunning views extending to looming mountain ranges.

Alhama is perfectly situated, close enough for an easy day or weekend trip to the splendid cities of Granada and Malaga; the sea air of the attractive seaside towns of Nerja and Almunecar; and the striking and exhilarating mountain regions of the Sierra Nevada and the Sierras Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara which offer great walking and wintersports.

Everywhere you look the view stretches as far as the eye can see and takes in gentle hills, green valleys and craggy moonscape mountain peaks. The Natural Park of the Sierras of Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama offer secluded picnic areas, usually next to a river or lake, and lovely walks. For fabulous hiking and superb views, the peak of La Maroma is at 2,080m. Less strenuous, the Pico de Lucero hike is very special - ask us for info.

The attractive towns of Loja, Montefrio, Antequera and Archidona are all easy driving and under an hour away. We can put you in touch with local people offering bike hire and walking/hiking/cycling holidays.
