Village House in Deia, Mallorca - Stunning Old Village House In Quiet Location

Exceptional old stone village house which has been recently superbly renovated. We have kept the original features but decorated with contemporary art and ceramics as well as distinctive furnishings and antiques. Situated near to the church in a quiet position and arranged over three storeys it overlooks the Tramuntana mountains from both the front and rear of the house. This area and range of mountains is a world heritage site. There is an integrated art/yoga studio on the top floor of the house facing the secluded sun terrace which has more spectacular views. The ground floor features a cosy, stylish sitting room with open fireplace which opens into the dining area which has the original stone floor. There is an ultra modern kitchen finished in mallorquin stone with small seating area and access to a sunny secluded garden terrace where you can dine al fresco under a lemon tree . The first floor has two large bedrooms with contemporary oak furniture and a luxurious and spacious wet room which leads to another small, private terrace ideal for sunny breakfasts.

For the information of prospective clients this property has a rental licence as required by law in Mallorca.

About Angela Rider

Hello, thank you for browsing my profile. I have had a house in Deia for about fifteen years and have lived in this old house at the top of the village for the last ten years. It feels as though I am coming home every time I fly in as there are many friends who live here and everyone is cheerful and friendly. I try to visit the house every two months and can work here as an artist as I have a studio on the top floor. I can hear the church bell telling me the hour during the day as I work, and see visitors walking up the hill to see the lovely buildings and the views of the mountains. I often take an early morning swim in the cala, walking down through the olive groves and climbing back up before breakfast, sometimes stopping for coffee at one of the local bars, surrounded by the scent of lemons.

Why Angela Rider chose Deià

I decided to buy the house in Deia because of the spectacular location and the unique atmosphere of relaxation and creativity. The house was re designed to fit in with my requirements and every day spent there is a pleasure. Once you go behind the large wooden doors you are in your own private world with garden, roof terrace and studio all hidden from view. Yet step outside and you can walk down to the centre of the village to any number of restaurants. There is usually something going on, local live music, concert recitals and fiestas, held traditionally throughout the year. I rarely bother to use a car. I have never regretted my commitment to this area and can't really think of an alternative where I would rather holiday, unless I am looking for snow and that's a rarity in Deia!

What makes this house unique

I can relax in total peace and quiet away from the centre of town and yet close to the church and village square. I get sun all day from one area or another. If I want to go for long walks I can, or take the local bus into Soller or Palma. There is a public tennis court in the village and the wonderful Residencia is available for supper, beauty treatments and gallery visits or a cava at sunset.

In the winter, I use the little sitting room on the ground floor and have a log fire. Some of the restaurants stay open and the little shops are always busy. Christmas and New Year are charming and the village is full. Twelfth Night has the festival of Three Kings which culminates at the Church about 100 metres from the house.

'Just a note on our return from Deia to say how very much we appreciated your fabulous house and its situation. It was our first visit to Mallorca and such a treat to have Ramon Llull as our base. We loved your style and the atmosphere that pervades: simple, comforatble and local. Deia - recommended by my sister - is a very lovely place, fabulously peaceful in what was presumably ' high season' and we were glad to be car-less as we loved the walk to the beach through the olive groves and pine. The water was sheer heaven, and we quickly fell into a blissful rhythm which I could have continued for much longer. The perfect place to swim, walk , read, sketch, think........ D and J, Paris.

Notes on accommodation: There is an efficient fireplace for cooler months with wood storage in the cellar as well as ample heating in all the living areas and portable heating in the bedrooms. There is a travel cot for babies, but parents of small children would find this house a little too hazardous to contemplate renting due to the many steep unguarded stairways, top floor roof terrrace and situation close to the lane up to the church. Outside: Secluded ground floor garden/terrace with mature lemon tree, terracotta pots filled with palms and herbs. Table and comfortable seating for outside dining with ample lighting. Second small terrace leading from the first floor with dining area and totally private situation, perfect for breakfast time in the warm sun. Really splendid top floor, sun trap, roof terrace with teak seating, decorative plants and stunning views of the village and surrounding mountains. Utility Room: All washing machine and laundry facilities are incorporated in the large well equipped kitchen. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included. The property is cleaned before and after each rental period and fresh linen is supplied weekly. Other: Studio,airy room on top floor with large glazed access to roof terrace and lovely views. This room is wonderful for use by painters or to relax in. Sunny private top floor roof terrace with comfortable seating and outstanding views. Garden dining area.

Idyllic house in the heart of Deia

I loved everything about this home. The rooms are beautiful - not the usual soulless rental furniture - but instead one gets the sense that this is a much loved space that has had pieces of furniture, paintings, books etc added over years with great care, integrity and love. The light in the house is beautifully moody - as a photographer I was in my happy place - the downstairs living area is cosy with dreamy light and the second living space at the top of the house is bright and airy and looks out over the spectacular Tramuntana mountain range. The bedrooms are delightful - furnished and decorated in a style that so perfectly fitted into my idea of what a typical old house in Deia should look like. I felt i was living in my very own Merchant Ivory film. The location is perfect - just a 2 minute walk to the heart of the village, allowing one to feels like a native. Everyday began for me with a walk down Cala Deia and back again - a longer and more strenuous walk back up - but wonderful exercise and a feeling of being so at one with the landscape. I will most definitely be returning.

Lovely house in Deia

We stayed in this old Mallorcan town house in Deia for almost 2 weeks and found it delightful. The accommodation was spacious and well maintained, with 3 different sets of outside space, for sitting and eating. Deia is a very pretty little town, with a well stocked supermarket within easy walking distance, so easy to self cater. We had no need to rent a car as the buses, although infrequent, are reliable. We are keen walkers and this area was ideal for us. We liked walking down to the nearby Cala, but for swimming the beach at Porto Soller makes it easier to get into the sea.

The local cafes offered good value lunches, and on Fridays and Saturdays there is live music and dancing at a local bar, which was fun. We had a super meal at the Trattoria on our last evening.

I would definitely recommend this property for couples or for families with older children.

Special interest holidays:

The house has a large open and airy studio with splendid views of the mountains. It is available for use by painters who would need to provide their own equipment, but is equally suitable for yoga, or just for relaxing in. The village is home to many artists and there are often painting courses offered. The many local walks, across the Tramuntana mountains or along the coastline are a big attraction for visitors in the cooler months. There are many guidebooks at the house to help you plan a days outing.

Deia is famous for its restaurants and there are places to suit all tastes and budgets. From the gourmet to the simplest tapas,

Coast/Beach:

Deia beach is either reached by a 15 minute walk through olive and citrus groves along a footpath opposite the house, or a five minute drive by car. There is ample parking by the beach which although not sandy is charming and has a wonderful waterside fish restaurant. There are clifftop walks around the beach leading to smaller swimming coves along the coast.

A favourite walk closeby is from son Marroig down to sa foradada where there is a wonderful Paella restaurant reached only on foot or by boat.

Walking in binaritx in the spring is beautiful as the water cascades down over rocks by the footpath.

Travel:

Palma airport is about 45 minutes drive away. A car is useful though not essential as there are good local bus services and several taxi drivers in the village. Two small local supermarkets provide all essentials and the many village restaurants can cater for all tastes.

Distances:

The nearest town to Deia is Soller, famous for its orange groves and its scenic railway to Palma. 15 minutes drive away. It is connected by a tramway to Port Soller which has a sandy beach. Valdemossa is about 15 minutes from Deia and is famous for its connection to Chopin and for the Cartuja (Cathusian monastery) situated in the village. Palma 30 minutes drive is a delightful city with good shopping and yacht harbour.

Further Details:

Deia is set in a fertile valley and is steeped in history. It has both Islamic and Christian connections and developed agriculturally with terracing of the land providing for olive trees and citrus. Latterly Deia has become home to bohemians and artists drawn to the natural beauty and simple lifestyle. Robert Graves, the poet, settled here and his house is now open to the public.

The village has many small boutiques selling local crafts and fashion. There are a variety of restaurants from the gastronomic through to simple tapas bars. The Residencia Hotel has two restaurants open to non residents as well as a spa for beauty treatments. Two small local supermarkets have supplies of fruit and vegetables, fresh baking and sell English newspapers. There is a pharmacy and two banks with cash dispensers. Within the area are many walks both long and shorter exploring the Teix mountains, walks through pine forests to Soller and Valdemossa or walks through olive groves to the beach and coastal paths. There is a public tennis court in the village and a number of tennis courts with professional instruction at La Residencia.

Booking Notes:
To book the house, a 10% non refundable deposit is required, with the balance payable four weeks before departure. Prices quoted are for four people. Please request a price for two by e mail. A damages deposit in the form of a cheque for £500 will be held in the case of first time visitors, and then either returned or destroyed provided there is no damage to the house and no replacement items are needed.

Changeover Day:
Flexible changeover day except Sunday. Arrivals after 2pm. Departure 10.30am.

Notes on prices:
The price quoted is for four. The house is available for long winter lets when the peace and quiet of the village is perfect for writers or painters, there is a suitable adjustment to prices. Please send an enquiry for a quotation on this.

Payment details are a deposit of 10% is taken at the time of reservation with the balance due four weeks before departure. The best way to pay is through my UK bank account using a BACS transfer but it is also possible to send a cheque. I will always stay in touch to re assure visitors of the safe arrival of payments.
