About the property

Traditional whitewashed village house with modern comforts and private pool in Albunuelas, Lecrin Valley, Granada

Casa de Luz is a beautifully renovated village house which sleeps 6. The accommodation comprises 2 double and 1 twin-bedded rooms, two bathrooms, a downstairs toilet, open-plan living areas and a secluded, private pool with patio areas and a sun terrace. The locally sourced furnishings, including antiques, enhance the authenticity of this centuries old house, in one of the most beautiful parts of Andalusia, the Lecrin Valley.

The house has been renovated by the owners in-keeping with its rural surroundings and the Moorish heritage of its locality. According to legend, this was a Moorish merchant's house and indeed a cellar was discovered during the renovation works.

The open plan living area comprises a fully equipped, modern kitchen, sitting and dining areas. There is a TV, WiFi and a music system with a jack to which, (for example), an iPhone can be connected. The master bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe, an en-suite bathroom with a Moorish style bath as well as a separate shower cubicle. The second bedroom has an antique double bed and matching dressing table. The third bedroom has two single beds. The second shared bathroom has a bath and shower.

Outside areas are secluded and not overlooked. The swimming pool has terraces around for relaxing and sun bathing as well as a covered area for shade and afternoon drinks. There is an al fresco dining area with a small fountain.

Complemented by modern comforts, the house provides an ideal base for exploring the treasures of Andalucia, including the Alhambra and the Albayzin in Granada. Whether walking through orange and olive groves a stone's throw from the house, horse riding in the Lecrin Valley, swimming at the beaches of the Costa Tropical or just sunbathing by the pool, the house provides an ideal base for a relaxing family holiday.

About The Owner

We found Albunuelas by chance when looking for a small renovation project in Andalucia. Following the topography lines on a map, we chanced upon the Lecrin Valley, with its unique micro-climate providing ideal growing conditions for oranges, olives and almonds farmed along terraces cut into the hillsides. Following the road to the end of the valley, we discovered Albunuelas, a small whitewashed village, parts of which date back to Moorish times. Having fallen in love with the locale, the small renovation project turned into quite a large renovation project as we bought two uninhabitable ruins in the old part of the village. Using local architects and builders, we renovated the two properties to create Casa de Luz. During the renovation works, a large cellar was discovered, giving credence to the story that this was an old Moorish merchant’s house. We have retained some of the original walls, and reused timbers where possible in order to retain as much of the original character as possible. We have bought antique furniture locally and decorated the house so as to make it a cosy welcoming home that we love.

What makes this house unique

The village of Albunuelas spreads out along the hillsides of the Rio Santo gorge, providing wonderful views and peaceful walks including the GR7 long distance path. It is possible to take short walks or undertake a long walk along the GR7, straight from the house.

The outside areas of the house are totally secluded and not overlooked, so it is possible to eat, swim or sunbathe in total privacy.

The Lecin Valley is wonderful to explore. There are small villages, good restaurants and bars within an easy drive. Granada and the Costa Tropical are 30 minutes away. The Sierra Nevada and the Alpujarras can also be easily accessed.
