Overview

About the property

Unique, spacious villa 30 metres from beach, large terrace with sea views, sleeps up to 8

Malo Blue is a spacious, unique, architect designed villa with panoramic sea views over the Adriatic to the island of Brac.

Malo Blue featured in the programme 'Homes by the Med' which aired on the channel More 4 on Tuesday 21st March 2017. It is the last house in the programme.

As Malo Blue is a villa and not inter-connecting apartments there is a spacious kitchen and communal areas which is more than enough for groups of up to 8 people. The villa is surrounded by a large private garden which offers privacy and space. There are a couple of undercover parking spaces off the road at the back of the garden. Situated on a private leafy path the villa is just 30 metres from the secluded Tice beach in Stanici and a further 5 minute walk further along the beach to the main Stanici beach (there are no roads to cross to reach the beaches). Malo Blue is 100m from grocery stores and restaurants in the village. The villa can be approached through the garden from the parking spaces or through a gate off the path to the beach. A wrought iron fence runs around the garden. There is a distinctive well lit entrance corridor, which is a great space to leave beach paraphernalia and offers privacy. At the end there is a wide front door which opens onto a spacious hall with a fitted cupboard, bookcase and side table. The hall opens onto the kitchen area to the right. Here the ceiling rises to the full height of the villa. A gallery landing looks down onto the dining area where there is a large table seating up to 10. A window runs from floor to ceiling flooding the room with light and offers a view of the BBQ and sea beyond. There is a hob, oven, two fridges and small freezer as well as dishwasher and microwave. Shelves, drawers and cupboards house the kitchen equipment. A chimney breast partly divides the kitchen area from the sitting area. This gives the impression of being separate spaces whilst still being able to see and chat to anyone in the living area. Three wide wooden steps on the left of the chimney breast lead to the sitting room. At one end there is a brick open fireplace and at the other end french windows which lead onto the dining terrace. There is a large L-shaped sofa, a two seater sofa, stool and coffee table in the living area. The terrace has a shade canopy of bougainvillea and runs the full length of the villa and round to the kitchen and BBQ. There is a dining table and chairs as well as chairs and low table and sun loungers on the terrace. Steps by the BBQ lead down to a shady covered area under the terrace and a room where beach toys, extra chairs and suitcases can be stored. Off the hall is one double room with a king size bed, fitted wardrobes, sea views and French windows leading onto the dining terrace. The ceiling rises from normal height by the French windows to almost full building height at the other side of the room. There are two further bedrooms both of which are twin rooms. They are both identical in size and layout with fitted wardrobes, sea views and access onto a terrace. Both rooms are spacious enough for a camp bed or cot in addition to the twin beds. The twin room on the ground floor leads off the hall and has a French window which accesses the terrace to the side of the house by the BBQ. A large shower room is to the left of the front door. Both shower rooms have good water pressure, an independent water heater, a wall heater, loo, basin, bidet, cupboard and a window. A wide spiral staircase leads to a spacious first floor landing which has a fitted cupboard, book shelves and a semi-circular gallery which looks over the dining area. Off the landing is the second shower room, it is identical to the one on the ground floor but for the inclusion of a washing machine. Next to the shower room on the landing there is a door off to a part covered terraced which is good for drying beach clothes etc. Clothes horses are provided. The second twin room is opposite the shower room and has a French window which opens onto a small balcony with views up and down the bay. All bedrooms, living and kitchen areas have sea views. Malo Blue was originally designed and build in the 1970's. It is one of a kind. Commissioned by a Macedonian sweet manufacturer it was the first commission for a recently qualified architect from Sarajevo who is now a well know architect in Split responsible for the design of many public buildings and shopping centres. It has been completely refurbished to a high standard and offers stylish and spacious open plan living, with areas where guests can find privacy.

The Practical Stuff. After our last holiday in rented accommodation before we bought Malo Blue, I complained to my husband that lovely as the setting etc. may be, we still have to do most of the usual chores I do at home (cooking, shopping for food, deciding what we are going to eat, washing up, washing etc.) but with less facilities! I have equipped Malo Blue so I and I hope you don’t feel like this. There is plenty of cooking equipment, serving platters, sharp knives (no beating food into submission), and cutlery and crockery for all ages. There are relevant cook books (I find Jamie Oliver amongst others is great) for simple and delicious meals using the ingredients you find here. This I hope eliminates brain racking. There are two fridges so cold drinks or fresh food is not a decision you will need to make. Similarly there are lots of ice cube trays. There are cool bags and ice blocks for supermarket shopping and picnics on the beach and shopping bags. We have lots of drying rack space for beach towels and washing. We are generous with towels and provide beach towels which I hope makes packing easier. There is a room under the terrace for beach stuff, windsurf boards etc. so you don’t feel like you are creating an obstacle course bit by bit in the house as beach stuff is just dumped. There are a number of seating areas so you are not constantly clearing tables just so you can sit down with a coffee or glass of wine or to look at the view. There are so many DVD’s for all ages you won’t even get through a tenth of them but there will be plenty of choice for all ages. There are books and magazines so if you forget yours there should be something to read. Similarly we encourage guests to leave their magazines.

About Mrs Jane Lampard

We are a family of 4 who live in England. My husband is a dentist and I juggle part time marketing work with children. We have both lived abroad, love to travel and are keen for a bit of adventure. From very young both my children have backpacked with us. As well as having other holidays and adventures, we still go to Croatia every year, not because we feel we ought to but because we all still love it. Apart from the location, climate and culture, we love the fact we are part of a Croatian community on our beach hillside in Stanici. We have Croatian friends. My children go on fishing and boating expeditions with theirs and my husband plays annual Croatia vs. England tennis matches with neighbours and their family. It is more than just a holiday.

I have equipped the house well as there is nothing more irritating than having to have a rota for use of a plate or teaspoons because there aren't enough! We love our house and feel very lucky to have found it, we genuinely want people to enjoy their holiday at Malo Blue.

Mrs Jane Lampard purchased this villa in 2003

Why Mrs Jane Lampard chose Stanići

We found Malo Blue after a backpacking adventure along the Dalmatian coast in 2003. My children were then 4 and 3 years old. We had arrived in Split with only the outline of a plan and nothing booked apart from a car. We loved every moment and a chance stay at a very charming retired submarine engineer's apartment led to us finding the villa and buying it. When we found it it had been shut up for almost 10 years after the death of the owner. The villa was almost hidden by the overgrown garden. Although we had no idea how to buy a house in Croatia, and spoke no Croatian we knew if we didn't go ahead and try and buy it, it would be a big regret. Even in its sorry state it was obvious that it had been the vision of a creative architect. Having bought it we were lucky enough to track down the architect. It had been his first commission on qualifying. He had since moved on to much larger projects. He helped us restore it to its former glory. It is a ridiculous waste of space, it should have 5 bedrooms not 3 but all the lovely communal space just adds to its appeal and the experience when staying there.

What makes this villa unique

Everyone who walks through the front door of Malo Blue - looks up and says WOW or COOL ...depending on their age! Even the entrance tells you that there is nothing run of the mill about the villa. It is a unique and striking house. There is a ridiculous waste of space with dining and living areas which have ceilings the full height of the building, a gallery landing, a wide spiral staircase in a 'turret' at the back of the villa. All of this lovely space adds to the experience of being by the sea. There are sea views wherever you look and a real feeling of space. The sea is so close and inviting, even if you don't consider yourself a water baby! My children live in it. The views of the sea and island from the villa means there is always something to watch. Even when you leave the villa, the feeling of somewhere special continues, the area is a leafy hillside leading to the sea and the pride and joy of its Croatian residents. All the properties are well kept with lots of plants and colourful flowers. A good beach bar, local shops, a beach at the end of the steps. It has a simple appeal and you don't need to be super organised or do everything together for a great holiday. Without asking we find all childrens' electrical entertainment left on the mantelpiece for the duration of the holiday. For the more active and adventurous or for those families with very active children there is a brilliant windsurfing school in Omis. The bay is perfect as it is shallow and the water is clear. The instructors are excellent and there is equipment for all ages. For the more adventurous there is kite surfing. For spectators there is somewhere to have a coffee, drink or ice cream. There are also a couple of tennis courts not far from the windsurfing in Omis.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is our first visit to Croatia and your villa is our first stop. We are very impressed it is most unusual and very well equipped. You would never get planning permission for this in an English village! We took your advice and did the boat trip up the Gorge at Omis, most enjoyable and fantastic scenery. All the local people have been extremely friendly. Thank you for a brilliant start to our holiday.

Additional location information

personal insights - must see activities and must see places

From the Villa it is a 3 minute walk down some leafy and bougainvillea clad steps (30 metres and steep steps) to the quiet beach at the bottom where we have a boat mooring and a couple of sun loungers. A further 5 to 10 minutes walk along the beach brings you to the main Stanici beach. Here there is a couple of small beach bars/restaurants where you can have a coffee, a drink, ice cream and ice cream sundaes or have fresh fish, grilled meat, risotto, pizza etc. It is very relaxed, extremely child friendly and has something for everyone. The tables are very close to the water side. Walking along the beach in the evening and dining on the beach is such a treat. If you don't fancy the steps to the beach there are beaches nearby you can drive to and park alongside.

During the day there is a man with a speed boat on the main beach who does trips around the bay or rides on an inflatable banana. There is also boat and skidoo hire. Recently there has been a fantastic masseuse further down the beach. It's all quiet and low key and as there is no road access or late night party life it is family friendly and safe.

In Stanici village itself there are three restaurants, this includes a couple of places which do very good take away pizza. There are two good grocery stores which have fresh bread delivered daily and stock everything you need for a good meal. In mid and high season there is a fruit and veg. stall. I love the fact that we can have a great day without anyone having to get in a car. Stanici is a great base for anyone wishing to visit other areas of Dalmatia and Bosnia. Many places you can visit and still get back for a bit of beach time. Although car hire is recommended there is a bus service which runs up and down the coast and stops in the village and there is a bus service from the airport to Stanici via Split.

There are other beautiful beaches and towns a short drive down the coast such as Brela which has an award winning beach with a lovely tree lined path by the beaches. The historic town of Makaraska has a beautiful square, lovely old harbour, regular boat trips and a lively beach with paragliding , pedalo's and stalls selling all sorts of things. There are some nice shops in the town and lots of places to eat. Baska Voda, although much smaller than Makarska, is also a lively little town on the coast. They are all much busier than Stanici and although it is great to visit it is always nice to get back to our quieter hillside and beach. Getting to the islands of Brac and Hvar is straight forward. In high season there are boats from Omis or more regular year round services from Split and Makarska. The water taxi on the main Stanici beach will take you across to Brac to a beautiful white Brac stone harbour called Pucisca or a tiny tree lined bay a bit further along. My children love the bay for a change as it is very shallow a long way out.

Split and Trogir are beautiful ancient towns by the Adriatic and an easy day trip from the villa. They are both UNESCO sites and an easy day trip. The old Riva in Split (esplanade by the sea) is next to Dioclecian's palace and a great place to watch life go by and wander around the old town. There are good shops and restaurants in the old town and lovely old squares to have a drink. The new Riva has luxury boats and yachts moored up just inches away from where you walk. It's good for a different kind of people watching. Guests have also made trips to Krka national park and Plitvicka Jezera National Park. Mostar in Bosnia is another good day trip. Sibenik, north of Split is another good town to visit on a day trip.

Omis is our nearest town (5km away) a 5 minute drive. The old town in Omis is at the mouth of the magnificent Cetina gorge where the river meets the sea. Omis has a great daily fish market as well as veg, fruit and local produce. There are cafes and restaurants in the ancient, pedestrianised part of town. If you are feeling active you can climb up to the castle where there is a spectacular view over Omis and the coast. Rafting down the Cetina is a great day out with spectacular scenery, crystal clear water and suitable for all age groups we have taken friends from 4 years to 65 years. You can also take a boat up the river, go canoeing, kayaking, climbing and canyoning. There is mountain biking and walking in the magnificent Biokovo mountains behind the house. In the evening Omis is a great place to wander around, maybe watch a water polo match, eat street food and browse the street stalls. It has a long sandy beach with a windsurfing and kite surfing school and tennis courts at the far end.

There is a beautiful tennis centre near Makarska which is next to the beach, where shade is provided by pine trees. It is about 20 minutes from the house and my husbands favourite tennis location ever.

Lovely, spacious home with amazing sea views

  • 5 of 5

Malo Blu is a beautiful, spacious, comfortable, architect designed home with the most amazing sea views from every room. Waking up in the main bedroom to a sea view was just paradise!

The patio and BBQ area was enormous with several seating / dining areas... each one enjoying the panoramic view. Our eldest son mastered the wood BBQ and cooked some fabulous meals of fresh fish from the local seafood market in Omis.

During the days, we enjoyed Zip Lining and Kayaking in Omis (we saved canyoning for our next visit). We also loved the beach at Mela Luka (a short drive away) with its crystal clear waters and sheltered bay... Our boys enjoyed jumping off the rocks there.

It was always a pleasure to come home to Malo Blu in the evenings. The kitchen was very well equipped and there were plenty of books and DVDs for entertainment.

We met Jane, the owner, prior to our stay and she was warm, welcoming, and helpful... and sent us lots of useful tips and suggestions about restaurants, activities, and day trips.

The Omis Riviera / Stanici is a beautiful region. We had a fabulous time and thoroughly recommend it. We hope to be back soon!

Thanks Jane!

Malo Blue

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week in this lovely house. The location is beautiful, overlooking the sea, and just a short walk down the steps to a small, but quiet and peaceful beach. The sea was incredible - clear, blue and full of fish. The house was very well equipped, clean, and interesting in its architecture. Very easy to get around on the bus and we travelled the short distance to the nearest town,Omis, every other day. Jane has been very helpful and accommodating in all our requests and questions. We hope to return very soon!

A wonderful villa and home

  • 5 of 5

From the beginning the organisation of our stay was brilliant. The welcome from the housekeeper and her family was wonderful and we fell in love with the villa and its location very quickly. Sitting by the sea surrounded by local people was perfect. Really enjoyed Omis and the Cetina gorge. Will definitely return.

Amazing villa, good location

  • 5 of 5

Malo Blue was clean and very well equipped, though the weather wasn't good enough for us to use the terraces or BBQ - next time!

Mrs Lampard gave us prompt friendly customer service and many good tips.

Omis is close and good for supplies, we liked the small seaside town of Brela and the restaurant Feral and the KRKA national park is an unmissable day trip.

We combined a stay at Malo Blue with a 5 night trip to Dubrovnik, flying in and out of Split, this worked very well.

The Croatian people are very friendly and helpful and Croatia is good value for money.

Highly recommended!!

Review for Malo Blue June 2016

  • 5 of 5

The house is as described. It is a beautiful designed spacious 3 bedroomed villa with lovely views over the Adriatic towards Brac. The owners have some local Croatians friends who live nearby who look after the property between lets so it is always left clean and tidy for new visitors. The beech is down a private path by the house and may not be suitable for the elderly as there are over 150 steps. Although for those who make the effort there are some lovely views and walks, plus of course the opportunity for swimming in the clear crystal blue waters. We ate twice in a restaurant called Marbella in Omis. The nearest major town to Stanici. The food and service is excellent and good value for money. We went on a boat trip to Brac and Hvar from Brela, a lovely little resort some 10 miles south of Stanici. We also went White Water rafting as organised by the Tourist Information Office in Omis. An excellent trip out for the whole family. We saw Turtles, River snakes (Only small ones!) and an Eagle! The views are spectacular and the rapids aren't too bad.

I would thoroughly recommend Croatia for a family holiday. Partly because there are loads of activities to do but also it is still relatively cheap, and because there is little industry everywhere appeared to be very clean. Customer service in all the restaurants we visited was first class, and the Croatians seemed to want to please the visitors. The weather was ideal, between 26 and 28C most days, although we did have a heavy thunder storm while visiting split.

Malo blue is exceptional, and is an ideal location for a family holiday. If you are planning to visit I'm already envious!
