Shh! Keep it a secret! Don't tell anyone about this Secret Escape, but in March 2014, a Telegraph newspaper article listed Andalucia number one of the "World's Top 20 Places for the Good Life", with a special mention of the area around Vera and Mojacar. Come for a taste of our amazing area....

For those seeking tranquillity in a truly stunning natural setting yet within reach of all facilities, this superbly appointed 2-bedroom air-conditioned townhouse (built 1975) enjoys one of the very best locations within the idyllic El Cortijo Grande valley. El Cortijo Grande was originally a traditional Spanish village with orange groves and when the old golf course was developed in the 1970's, the original buildings were retained and now form the clubhouse and bar/restaurant for the now-reopened rustic 9-hole golf course (a 3 minute stroll away).

The newer buildings from the 1970's match the old ones and our house has been refitted in the traditional Rustica style. The French doors open onto a private terrace with views of the orange groves & cypress trees, the Sierra Cabrera mountains, the hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo and the Mediterranean sea.

Enjoy the time-warp experience of being in this amazing protected valley where nothing at all has been built for more than 25 years. The house has every mod con, from a king-size bed to satellite TV, plus wi-fi broadband and wall-mounted air conditioning units in every room which meet the standards laid down by the Junta's new holiday rental legislation.

The reviews from previous guests and their comments in our visitor's book testify to our dedication in providing the best possible accommodation to accompany the stunning views.

About Jim Mackie

My wife and I live much of the year in this Levante area of Almeria province in Andalucia. We checked out several countries to buy a place to spend winter in the sun. We did cruises & viewing trips, but everywhere we fancied was either over-developed, or becoming over-developed. After visiting friends here in 2006, we finally found what we were looking for - an area of outstanding natural beauty, no high-rise buildings, welcoming people, low-density population - and quiet roads! Before each rental, we prepare our house to meticulous standards for our guests, using our 74-point checklist. We even de-crumb the toaster and clean out the kettle! Although we get a lot of return visitors, we love helping new guests discover the delights of the valley and the wonderfully scenic Levante area.

Jim Mackie purchased this house in 2006

Why Jim Mackie chose Turre

We bought our townhouse as a holiday home to spend our winters and rent out in summer. We hadn't planned to buy a townhouse in Cortijo Grande, but after viewing other property in the area, we went out for a drive one day and stumbled onto something like a scene from "The Sound of Music", except this was January and folk were sunbathing on their terraces and balconies. In 2007, we decided that we wanted to live in this wonderful unspoilt area full time, but we needed a bigger house, so we now have a villa in nearby Bédar village and rent our townhouse all year round. Apart from the views, we love the fact that the valley is tucked away from the holiday crowds, yet only 15 minutes from the coast. The main Mediterranean motorway is less than 10 minutes away, so getting around is easy.

What makes this house unique

Although this was originally a golf valley, don't expect a sterile air to the place. It's a 9-hole course, now re-opened and in the process of being restored by volunteers. with the clubhouse and bar in a rustic 300 year old building. There are two bar/restaurants within easy walking distance plus a nearby bar/restaurant with a pool. It's a protected valley and nothing new has been built here since 1986. We get a real kick out of taking new visitors onto the terrace and hearing them say "Wow!" when they see the views. Many of our renters have been keen walkers and birdwatchers. We get a lot of winter lets, as Almeria has the mildest and driest climate in Europe. We're delighted that all our guests have loved how we've developed our house and they have all looked after it really well during their visits.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Jim, many thanks for the use of the wonderful accommodation, very comfortable (and warm). We very much hope to be able to use the townhouse in the future, in particular the patio area. A fantastic view! Regards DW.

This place is paradise. We've never found a better view anywhere. See you next year ! J.M.

This place is the real deal. We walked for miles around the valley and up to Cabrera, saw kingfishers, wagtails and bee-eaters. We spent a lot of time chilling out around the pool at Los Limoneros, nice place! After quite a few indifferent holidays in noisy apartments, this was so peaceful that we sometimes missed quite a lot of the day sleeping. S.S.

A delightful holiday

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I had a wonderful holiday at this townhouse. The property has the necessary rental license and Jim sorted the little bit of admin in advance. We were safe in the knowledge that everything was being done legally and that our recent disaster with renting a holiday home in Benaldmadena would not be repeated.

The owner Jim met our hired car coming off the motorway and we followed him down to the house, only 5 minutes or so. The house is just so cute and lovely with big French doors onto a big terrace with the most amazing views of the golf course, mountains and right down to the med. We loved to sit on the terrace as the sun went down, watching the colors change in the hills to an amazing warm pink. As for the peace - the noisiest thing we heard all week were the birds.

The house is really well equipped with everything we could ever need, plenty of cutlery, dishes, pots etc. plus a toaster, coffee machine and even a juicer which we used for the oranges which we got at Turre market - 2 kilos for a euro. There was a very generous welcome pack included in the price with beer, cava, chorizo, chutney, jam, cheese, croissants, cakes and basics like milk, coffee and tea. And toiletries were also provided, so when we arrived we were able to shower then chill out with some cava and some lunch before having to venture out to the shops. Jim's guest book is full of information about how to work the TV, DVD player, white goods, air con etc plus market days, restaurants, days out. He really made us feel welcome and took time to explain everything and answer all our questions. In fact, in many years of holidaying, we don't remember being as well looked-after. We both slept very well in the large and very comfy bed (king-size?).

And would we return? Oh yes.

Cortijo Grande hide away

  • 5 of 5

As we booked the first two weeks in April, while the weather was just perfect for a pair of pasty Brits like ourselves.

Fantastic views from our balcony coupled with complete peace and quiet, all within the astonishingly beautiful southern Spanish countryside.

Connie and Jim are perfect host's and made us both feel very much at home from start to finish.

Wonderfully peaceful, beautiful location

  • 4 of 5

We were so grateful to you Jim and Connie, for coming to meet us, and guide us to the beautiful valley that is Cortijo Grand, also for the most generous welcome pack that we have ever had, so thoughtful after a long days travel.

The weather was absolutely perfect for the entire two weeks, and the view from the bedroom when we woke up in the morning was really wonderful.... To be able to have breakfast and dinner outside on the veranda overlooking the same view was really special, something we were NOT able to do in the South of France last August.

The big bonus was having two really authentic Spanish restaurants within walking distance , then only five miles to Majacar to have a really terrific dinner and a fantastic flamenco show. You also gave us such useful advise on all the attractions. Many thanks to you both.

Very nice property in a great location

  • 3 of 5

Everything was as listed on website and was reasonably clean and well maintained. Jim and Connie gave excellent service especially in meeting us off the motorway and taking us to house. If you want a nice very quiet location you could not do much better thin this place. Sadly the golf course is in very poor condition, we saw more goats on it than golfers! Would highly recommend Los pastores bar and restaurant in cortijo cabrera and Almazara bar just around the corner from the house. I would recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your comments, Roger. Apologies for the dust under the bed but it was definitely all swept and mopped for your arrival. We live in a land of dust and we had some high winds which didn't help. We really need some rain for the golf course, but it's been sparse this year.

Peace, tranquility and amazing views

  • 5 of 5

Sea views are all very well, but all you’re looking at is wáter. At this townhouse, the views of the golf course and the Cabrera hills are ever-changing throughout the day. It was a joy to sit on the terrace and just watch the colours and shadows change as the sun got lower in the sky, and you can still see the sea in the distance. My partner and I enjoyed exploring this beautiful unspoilt área of Andalusia and sampling some great-value restaurants, but we always made an effort to return to the townhouse by late afternoon to sit out with a drink and just soak in the winter warmth and the views of the valley.

The owner Jim’s organisation with our booking was faultless and better than we’re ever experienced on any holiday of any kind!. He sent us advance info and directions, and even met us coming off the motorway for us to follow him down to the house. The house was spotless and equipped with everything we could wish for. A lovely welcome pack of food and drinks was there for our arrival, there were tissues in every room, liquid soap, shower gel. In addition to mod cons such as air con, microwave etc there is a coffee maker, a juicer, a cool box. The wifi was reliable, nothing like as fast as the UK (hey, this is rural Spain) but fine for emails and googling for info about the área.

We have already booked our next visit and can’t wait to return. That says it all. Next time we'll try to spend less time chilling out on the terrace and more time exploring.

Special interest holidays:

For nature lovers, leave the car at the townhouse. There are plenty of easy walks, including the remains of an ancient mosque and even the old airfield and control tower featured in an Indiana Jones film. The valley is renowned for being a bird-watcher's paradise - we have seen storks on the golf course, kingfishers, bee-eaters, wagtails and there are an abundance of hoopoes. The Moorish village of Cabrera, just up the hill from Cortijo Grande, has riding stables plus a very attractive Italian restaurant and a wonderful Moroccan restaurant.

Also available within 15 minutes drive, surfing, sailing, tennis, water skiing, windsurfing, scuba diving, cycling, fishing and mountain biking.

There is an adventure centre at the new Hostal Rural, about half a mile from the entrance to Cortijo Grande - check it out on www.extremeadvmojacar.com. The Hostal Rural is a massive complex with a beach bar, swimming pool and two restaurants - there are monthly shows of authentic gypsy flamenco - Andalucia is the home of flamenco and we get to enjoy singers, guitarists and some fabulous dancers.

The lovely beaches of Mojacar & Garrucha are less than 15 minutes' drive. There's a new marina at Garrucha with bars & restaurants. 10 minutes further on, Villaricos has a small marina, a beach and a picturesque coastal road north to Aguilas. To the south, there is a spectacular drive to the nearby Cabo de Gata national park with photo stops. Here you will find beautiful scenery, flamingoes, windmills, botanical gardens and enchanting little fishing villages with boats parked up on the beaches.

Almeria airport is within 45 minutes motorway drive. Murcia airport is around 80 minutes' drive on the AP-7 toll motorway. There are plenty of flights into Alicante airport which takes us 1 hour 50 minutes using the main A-7 motorway. Drivers will relish the quiet roads around here - not even a traffic light within miles! Access to the townhouse is easy - the stone-arched entrance to Cortijo Grande is less than 3km from junction 520 of the N-340 motorway. Full directions are provided.

The townhouse is a 6-minute drive from the town of Turre which has lots of shops, bars, restaurants, banks, supermarket, chemist, post office and a market on Fridays. The delightful hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo is another 5 minutes away and leads down to the playa. Almeria city is less than an hour away, and well worth a day trip for its enormous fortress (free admission), Cathedral and harbour side. Granada and the Alhambra Palace can be reached in just over 2 hours.

Further Details:

'Los Pinos' restaurant is a minute's walk from the house, and previous guests have much enjoyed a drink or a meal in the charming courtyard. The Spanish-run cosy and atmospheric 'Almazara' bar/restaurant is in a 300-year old building a 3-minute stroll away. "Naciamento" is a renowned vegetarian restaurant.

The new Hostal Rural is near the entrance to Cortijo Grande and has a huge restaurant, a swimming pool and a pool bar. They do a 3-course dinner for 12.50 euros which includes generous main course including lamb and swordfish.

There are other bar/restaurants in the valley and up at Cabrera, including the stunning 'Riad Cabrera' Moroccan restaurant and Los Pastores bar/restaurant in a beautiful courtyard setting.

The bustling town of Turre is a 6-minute drive away, where you will find supermarkets, banks and lots of restaurants & bars - lunch for two of 4 tapas and 2 beers costs around 5 euros, and there are Spanish & British restaurants and cafes, plus 2 Indian restaurants and a great-value Chinese restaurant. There is a marina and excellent go-karting at nearby Garrucha, a water park and indoor heated pool at Vera. The large and quirky beach resort of Mojacar Playa is less than 15 minutes drive. The ancient Moorish hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo (seen in the distance from the townhouse) is a must, with its narrow streets, arches and alleyways, great shops, jazz and classical music venues, cultural centre and restaurants. There are other white hilltop villages to visit, including nearby Bédar, and Nijar for ceramics and rugs.

Cabo de Gato national park is a fantastic day out, with its idyllic fishing villages. The Mini Hollywood theme park & zoo, where the spaghetti westerns were made, is about 45 minutes away. In this part of Spain, there are many fiestas during the summer. The sun shines over 300 days a year and Christmas lunch is usually an outdoor event.
