About Lucy and Simon

We are an English family who moved here 9 years ago after falling in love with this stunning and unspoilt corner of the Spanish Pyrenees. We are keen outdoor enthusiasts, from hiking and mountain biking to spotting the many birds of prey and enjoying the huge variety of Pyrenees flowers and butterflies. We live in a nearby village, so we normally welcome guests on arrival and are on hand to offer local advice or answer any questions you may have, to ensure you make the most of your stay.

Lucy and Simon purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Lucy and Simon chose Torla-Ordesa

Torla is in the heart of the Central Spanish Pyrenees. At 1100m altitude it is high enough to provide a lush green landscape even in summer yet far enough east to escape the rainfall more associated with the western Pyrenees. Not only is Torla the closest place to stay for walkers wanting to explore the National Park of Ordesa and Monte Perdido but Torla itself is also a great place to walk from, with numerous ancient footpaths to explore. Torla lies at the head of the valley of Ara, named after the river which is just 5 mins walk from the house. There is superb white water rafting in the spring and several secluded spots along this pristine river for a dip in summer. For Romanesque and Medieval architecture, Jaca to the West and Ainsa to the East are a short drive away.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is perfectly situated for quick access to the Ordesa National Park, whether in your own car or going by the shuttle bus which leaves from a stop 150m away. The pretty medieval village of Torla with its small shops and range of restaurants and bars is just 3 minutes walk up some steps. The house is south-facing and well sheltered so the sun terrace is the perfect place for dining “al fresco” from spring through to autumn. During the summer, the giant fig tree in front of the terrace provides welcome shade. Because the bedrooms are set on 2 different floors this provides maximum privacy between parents and older children or between 2 couples, each with their own bathroom. Conversely the upstairs rooms are ideal for younger families.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Cosy well equipped retreat in a great location. We enjoyed spectacular walks and fantastic wildlife. Food shopping or restaurants are just a short walk away behind the house, although beware those few last steps might prove the toughest climb of the day after an outing in the mountains. Lucy and Julian, London, July

The house is in a super location, I loved the steps up to the church and the old village above. It is beautifully furnished with a lovely kitchen/living area and the terrace was great to sit on in the evening. The bus service into the Ordesa canyon is great with the stop about 100 yards away.

From the moment we arrived, the immaculate presentation and thoughtful gifts told us we were in for a treat of a week. We thoroughly enjoyed your cosy house. We were also delighted with how close the house is to beautiful walks. We particularly liked walking by the river, occasionally dunking our feet in the water. Paul & Graham, Norfolk, August

Fantastic stay in a first class property

  • 5 of 5

Right from the start Lucy and Simon's response time was quick, so we had no worries there. The directions they gave us from the airport to the property was easy to follow. Lucy was there to meet us with a welcoming bottle off wine and a lovely bowl off fruit and showed us around the property. The property it self was first class very clean and everything you need ( Home from Home). There was no parking at the property but there is a large car park nearby 3 min walk away. It was lovely to be woken up each morning with the church bells and the views from the property to die for. As keen bird watchers Lucy recommended a couple off places to visit, which we took up and glad we did saw Lammergeier close up and Red kite on the nest, the only downfall we didn't get to see the wall creeper, in a two week stay in the Pyrenees 8 days in Torla and 5 days in the lowlands we got to see 143 species. Torla it self is an ideal base to explore the Pyrenees, there are plenty off bars and places to eat thou we did eat in a lot . The locals were very friendly and helpful. Overall we can see why Lucy and Simon fell in love with this place, we have toured all over Spain and this is the first time in the Pyrenees, and like they say we have saved the best to last. We will definitely be back. Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely property. Janet Dale

Fantastic stay in the Ordessa valley

  • 4 of 5

Great location in the Pyrenees. The decor is awe inspiring. Excellent site for outdoor activities like hiking. Torla is a small and very charming village that has all the commodities required for an enjoyable stay. The house itself is small, but comfortable and has all the necessary amenities. It's most appropriate for 4 to 5 people. It's next to the main road that passes next to the village, so you hear traffic passing by during the day when the windows are open, but it's very quiet at night. We really enjoyed our stay and would return again. Thanks Lucy!

Great property in heart of Torla village

  • 5 of 5

Great property, in heart of village, amazing views and close to National park. Nicely furnished, well equipped and spotlessly clean. We would recommend this house to others.

Terrific Torla!

  • 5 of 5

A lovely friendly welcome from Lucy, very helpful to be shown the workings of the house. The house was super, everything we needed for our stay. The Red guide book was excellent much better than the Cicerone one we brought with us. Torla is a buzz of a wee mountain town, with the house so well placed to be able to nip up a few steps and be in the centre. We thoroughly enjoyed walking every day and seeing the autumn colours develop throughout the week. There are good walks starting from the house, nice not to use the car.

Top Marks for Casa Petirrojo

  • 5 of 5

Casa Petirrojo in Torla gets top marks for people, practicalities and location. Lucy and Simon, the owners, are kind, helpful and knowledgeable; the accommodation has all that is expected from the specification and it all works; the location is ideal in terms of access to the mountains and the abundant natural history. We were especially interested in flowers and it is hard to imagine a better place in May or June; we did good walks of the relatively easy kind but there are clearly opportunities for more heroic efforts too. We can't praise it too highly.

Great spot

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely week in this cottage in Torla. Usually we look for cottages in the middle of nowhere but it was actually really nice to be able to walk into the village and buy bread in the morning and have a beer in the warm evenings - there was a nice buzz in the place. As warned, the Ordesa valley was a bit busy in August but there were other beautiful valleys to explore close by. We spotted lots of different butterflies, lizards, birds (saw a lammergeier ) and snakes. The cottage was very clean and well-maintained and looks like it does in the listing. I thought the road might be noisy but it was fine and we liked hearing the church clock chime. We couldn't always find a parking space close-by but never had to walk longer than five minutes - not arduous. We enjoyed a days canyoning and also a 4x4 trip above the valley. Temperature ranged from low to upper twenties - I don't know if that's typical for August there. I would certainly recommend.

Times to other towns by car; 5 mins to Broto for banks. 50 mins to the medieval town of Ainsa. 60 mins to Jaca and then on to the valley of Anso. 90 mins to the historic and cosmopolitan city of Huesca. 80 mins to the spectacular National Park of Sierra de Guara.

Further Details:

The National park information centre and shuttle bus for the park are 150m aw . Torla has 2 small supermarkets, butcher, 2 banks with cashpoints, restaurants, bars, doctors, post office and several adventure sports companies. Locally there is a broad spectrum of flora. The valley of Ara is green and lush with beech, birch, poplar, maple, oak and pine. One guest wrote "the walks through beech forests and canyons and the waterfalls have been among the best we have ever encountered" (Mike and Lyn,Tasmania. May 2009). Above the tree line there are nearly 1500 species of small flowering plants. We set off on one of the many walks from the house, it was June, and spent over an hour absorbed in the variety of flowers just 10 minutes away -the walk was put on hold! Fauna is abundant. Of the larger birds, there are regular sightings of red kites, griffon and Egyptian vultures, golden eagles and lammergeiers can also be seen in the park. A pied woodpecker often visits the house in Spring and Autumn, green and black woodpeckers are common. You may even see the coveted wall creeper in the park. You will certainly be unlucky not to see a red squirrel during your stay and both chamois and marmots are abundant in the park. The butterflies are prolific with a couple of species only to be found in the valley of Ordesa. Spring in this part of the Pyrenees lasts from April to early June and is particularly beautiful, the rivers are at their best and the wild flowers and the vibrant greens transform the landscape. Autumn, from October to the end of November is also a special time. Once more the landscape changes colour, reds, browns and russet dominate. It is no wonder we get both photographers and artists from all over the world coming at this time of year. For the more adventurous we can arrange the hire of mountain bikes, horse riding, canoeing, canyoning and rafting. There is a superb via ferrata route locally at Broto, suitable for all. Every type of climbing is catered for here.
