Family House in Carrapateira, Western Algarve. - Perfectly Located in Unspoilt Village Close to Fantastic Beaches

A spacious and airy villa, perfectly located in the unspoilt village of Carrapateira and within walking distance of a beautiful beach. The house is near enough to the centre of the village for convenience but far enough away to guarantee peace and quiet. The village has a small shop, a market selling fresh vegetables, fruit, fish and meat and a number of restaurants and bars. There are also surf shops and bike hire in summer. Carrapateira lies within the South West National Park and is ideal for surfing, hiking, biking, bird watching, sea fishing – or just relaxing.

About the Owner

We – Rebekka, Tim and George – live on the Gower peninsula in Wales with our dog Meg (a Sprollie).

Rebekka works as a translator and Tim teaches magazine journalism at Cardiff University. George is getting into surfing, which is a big sport on Gower – and in Carrapateira too.

Perfect for us!

  • 5 of 5

We are an adventurous family of five and this house was perfect for us. It was clean, well-appointed and gave us room to spread out. The lack of TV and WiFi were just what we wanted as it let us unplug and decompress. If you do need to check email there is a little cafe in Carrapateira (about 5 minutes walk). We loved how small the town of Carrapateira was but it still had everything we needed. Bordeira and Amado beaches are stunning with big waves that we all enjoyed playing and surfing in. You can walk to and see Bordeira from the house - although the walk takes longer than expected (about 25 minutes over the dunes). My only suggestion would be an upgrade to the mattress quality. The kids were fine but my husband and I woke up with an aching back every day (maybe we are getting old!).

All in all - my family loved the location and the house and we had an amazing time. We would highly recommend this!

Location

From the Owner

When we visited Portugal for the first time, long before we dreamed of owning a house there, we had a good look around the west coast and decided that of all the places we saw, Carrapateira would be the ideal place to live. Apart from anything else, it had a lot of similarities to beautiful Gower but with guaranteed sun, fresher fish and cheaper wine. When circumstances allowed, Rebekka came over with her mum and George to search for a property and after a bit of trial and error found this house in the location of our dreams – right in the heart of the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina. The bigger towns of Lagos and Portimao are an easy drive away. Alezur to the north and Vila do Bispo to the south have astonishingly good produce markets.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

Surf schools at Amado beach and Sagres. Surfing beaches up and down the coast, all within easy driving distance.

Horse riding centres nearby.

Sea fishing from the cliffs.

Bike hire in Carrapateira and Sagres.

Hiking along the coast or inland.

Coast/Beach:

The sweeping sandy expanse of Carrapateira beach is easily reached with a gentle walk over the dunes, or an even shorter drive. There is a good restaurant nearby – Sitio do Rio. Amado beach, famous for its surf, can quickly be reached from the main road or by taking the breathtaking clifftop track; other fantastic surfing beaches within easy reach. The whole of the south-west coast is noted for its dramatic cliff scenery; the more sheltered south coast is just a short drive away.

Travel:

Faro 90 minutes (max). Seville 3 hours. Lisbon 3 hours.

It would be possible to reach the house by public transport from Faro or Lisbon (train to Lagos, then bus) but car hire may be more convenient.

Distances:

Lagos 25 minutes by car. Aljezur 20 minutes. Sagres 20 minutes. Vila do Bispo 15 minutes. Arifana/Monte Clerigo 35 minutes.

Further Details:

There are bars and restaurants in and around Carrapateira, along with a small daily market and a village shop. Nearest banks are Vila do Bispo or Aljezur. Supermarkets in Aljezur, Sagres and Budens.

Facilities

From the Owner

Lote 22 is close enough to the centre of the village to hear the fishmonger's siren when he arrives in the square. It is close enough to stroll to the surprising number of bars and restaurants that this deceptively small village offers. But it's perfectly positioned to be an oasis of quiet and tranquillity. Importantly, it's also close enough to the beach to be able to walk there through the dunes. The coastline has numerous other beaches large and small, often at the end of a rustic lane, usually with a great cafe/bar. If you're feeling active you can surf, windsurf, mountain bike, golf and walk the cliffs or inland hills. Quite frankly, it's hard to think of a better place to have a holiday.
