About the property

Apartment in Ripoli, near Lari, Tuscany, Pisa Province - Sun-Drenched Hillside near Pisa

Delightful one bedroom apartment on the first floor of a medieval farmhouse and watchtower in a quiet hamlet on the Western Valdera. Just 25 minutes from Pisa (which has cheap flights from BA, Ryan Air and easyJet), it is set among olive groves and has shared use of a pretty garden and a charming infinity pool. Beautifully restored, with exposed beams and original terracotta floors and ceilings, the apartment has its own private entrance, generous south and west-facing windows and is well equipped and furnished with a tasteful mix of contemporary classics and antiques. In a few minutes you can be in Cevoli, the medieval village you can see from the apartment, or Lari, famous for its castle, or Casciana Terme, well known for its thermal spa. Within an hour you can be in Florence, Lucca, Volterra or Siena - or playing golf on one of the best golf courses in Italy, or swimming in the sea. This is a Tuscany that's amazingly unspoilt and amazingly accessible, offering infinite possibilities for culture, food and wine. From London to Pisa takes less than 2 hours.

About Christina Patterson

I'm a journalist and writer. I fell in love with this special apartment when i first saw it, and I've been in love with it ever since. I go there to rest, and dream, and lie in the sunshine, and write.

My guests seem to love the place as much as I do. I hope you'll love it, too.

Christina Patterson purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Christina Patterson chose Casciana Terme

I wanted a peaceful hideaway, where I could gaze at a beautiful landscape, and lie in a pool and look up at a blue, blue sky. This part of Tuscany is as beautiful as the rest of it, but it isn't overrun by tourists. Ripoli is a tiny hamlet, but the nearest village, Cevoli, just a 10-minute walk away, has a few shops and a couple of bars. A 10-minute walk in the other direction, there's a big supermarket, where you can buy practically everything. And there are plenty of lovely villages, and small towns, nearby: Lari, with its medieval castle, Casciana Terme, with its spa, Ponsacco, with its pretty square. Pisa is just half an hour away, and there's so much more to it than the tower. It's also less than an hour to Volterra, Lucca and San Gimignano. There's so, so much to see and enjoy...

What makes this apartment unique

Cosy, comfortable and stylish, this lovely flat is an excellent base to explore Tuscany, but also a peaceful place to read, sleep and dream.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely flat. We felt that it was a little slice of paradise that is already sorely missed. Our only regret was that we hadn't booked two weeks." Alison and Asa Harris

"We had a wonderful fortnight. The apartment was everything we could have wanted and the pool and the company at Borghettino di Ripoli helped to make it all a relaxing and enjoyable experience in a truly beautiful part of the world. We would love to stay there again in the future." Phil and Carol Morgans

"Had a fabulous week in your very gorgeous place. Swam in the pool every day - and fell in love with Tuscany." Viv and Graham Simmutch

A little bit of Paradise (honest )!

  • 5 of 5

The review of the beautiful apartment in Ripoli is based on 5 previous visits and we intend to go again very soon! No review will do the apartment and surroundings justice, but believe me, if you visit you will certainly want to go back again. From the delightful apartment, to the beautiful grounds and infinity pool and the friendly locals, you cannot go wrong. We have always had a wonderful time in Ripoli, spending days by the pool with your peace and quiet only disturb by the bells in the local church or a tractor in the near- by vineyards. But within driving distance or a short train journey you can visit Florence, Sienna and dome unbelievable villages in the mountain areas. For all our trips we have had excellent information and help from the owner, even down to the very kind gesture of her leaving a 'welcome' card and bottle of prosseco for our arrival! It is an ideal place if you want to mix some rest with sight- seeing but being able to see so many fascinating places, many of which have not yet been 'spoilt' by the tourist industry. It really is a ' little bit of Paradise' but don't tell everyone as we want to visit again soon!

Great little apartment with fantastic views

  • 5 of 5

Christina's apartment is absolutely perfect for anyone looking to relax in Tuscany, while being ideally placed for day trips by car to the major Tuscan cities or Siena, Florence and Pisa.

The apartment is well kept and the bottle of Prosecco on arrival was a very nice touch.

The infinity pool is great and Lari is a lovely local town for a quiet meal in the evenings.

Would definitely return.

Blessed with amazing weather, we had an amazing time at Christina's property. In the middle of nowhere, yet within an easy reach of interesting places to visit, this place is a gem! And the pool... Best views and guaranteed sun, so lovely!! Truly recommend.

Lovely location, easy to get to, peaceful and relaxing.

  • 4 of 5

Pretty little apartment, perfect for one or two people. Beautiful setting in rolling Tuscan countryside with pretty shared garden and glorious pool. Only downside is no balcony in this 1st floor apartment so was a bit tricky going up and down the outside stairs with trays of food if you want to eat al fresco. Easy to get to from Pisa airport (thanks for the very clear instructions Christina) and located very centrally between Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca. Lots of very pretty wee villages to explore locally - ice-cream is to die for in Lari (about 7 km from Ripoli). Thank you Christina.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. I'm glad you had a nice time. Yes, I wish the apartment had a balcony too, but alas, I can't conjure one up! I hope the setting etc went some way to making up for it.

Lovely bolt hole!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week at Christina's apartment in Ripoli at the end of September. The weather was perfect and so was the pool and terrace area surrounding it. The views over the surrounding olive groves and vineyards are beautiful. The apartment is tastefully furnished and appointed and we liked the large shower enclosure. Everywhere was well presented and very clean.

We enjoyed going for walks from the property and even saw wild boar and deer very nearby! We ate out at a few nice local restaurants - nothing within walking distance but not far by car. We enjoyed visiting Volterra and Lari particularly. The medieval reenactment day at Lari was memorable!

All in all, the apartment is in a great position for exploring Tuscany and isn't far from Pisa Airport. Christina gave us detailed instructions on how to find the property which were most helpful and lots more general information and suggestions for restaurants, travel etc. which was really great! It would be even better if the apartment had its own private outdoor eating space but we still managed to have an enjoyable barbecue by the well. We would definitely consider a return visit. Thanks very much, Christina!

A little piece of Tuscany with much to give.

  • 5 of 5

Cosy and clean. Well positioned for visiting the well known and not so well known sights.

A lovely pool to dip into when the visiting is done or when the weather is too hot for travelling.

This is an ideal home from home for couples or close friends.

Car: recommended

Livorno, a pretty port with lovely beaches, is a 40-minute drive away.

Pisa (which has cheap flights from Ryan Air, BA and easyJet) is 32km / 25 mins away by car. Florence72km / approx 45 mins away. Car hire is recommended, but not essential. Trains from Pisa to Pontedera take less than 15 mins and from there you can get a bus to Ripoli, or to Cevoli, which is a 10-min walk down the road.

The nearest village is Cevoli. Other towns and villages within a few minutes' drive include Lari, famous for its castle, Ponsacco and Pontedera, which are both good for shopping, and Casciana Terme, famous since the 12th century for its thermal spa. A few hundred metres down the road, there's Cevoli, a picturesque village which has two cafes and a shop which stocks freshly baked bread and local specialities. Down the road on the other side, there's a well-stocked supermarket, with a fabulous range of fresh fruit and veg.The nearest bank is at Casciana Terme or Ponsacco.
