Spacious Cottage with Private Pool set in tranquil 2 acre site

Overview

Property

Updated: 30-Nov-2016
Peaceful Holiday Cottage with pool near Duras, Lot et Garonne, Aquitaine

Surrounded by orchards and vineyards and set in it's own 2 acres of parkland, this spacious and well equipped cottage has its own private swimming pool (5m x 10m), and makes a peaceful and relaxing country base for 4 people. The ancient market town of Duras with it's imposing chateau, is less tha 2km away and is easily walkable, mostly off the road.

The area is famous across France for high-class prunes (pruneaux d'agen) and for duck farming (confit, foie gras etc). It also has a selection of small but excellent wine regions, of which Cote de Duras is one. The local white wine is particularly good and Berticot is also the name of the local wine co-operative. Berticot wine is on sale in many British supermarkets.

The cottage lies at the end of a private driveway off the D 708 (about 250 mtrs long), and shares the site with the owners house. The owner is never in residence when the cottage is occupied, so all the facilities, including the pool, are for the sole use of the guests.

The cottage is tastefully decorated and features exposed stonework and beams throughout and consists of a large lounge/dining room, two large double bedrooms, both en suite, a fully equipped kitchen, a third bathroom (shower and WC), and a utility room. Smoking is not permitted inside the cottage, and pets are not allowed.

Outside is a covered dining veranda overlooking the pool (table and four chairs) with an electric ceiling fan, and at the rear of the property, there is a connected raised wooden decking and patio with breakfast tables and chairs. The pool has it's own patio with sunbeds and sun shades.

The lounge is equipped with a flat screen TV (with satellite dish for UK channels), a woodburning stove, hifi system, DVD player, Wifi connection, dining table with four chairs and easy chairs. Large french doors give access to the pool and dining veranda. Indoor games and books are provided, but you will need to bring your own DVD's.

Bedroom one has two single beds (which can be made up as a 6ft double), and has an en-suit bathroom with bath (shower over), WC, basin, electric towel rail, mirror and shaver socket. The bathroom also has underfloor heating

Bedroom two has a 5' double bed, and an en-suit shower room (walk in shower) with WC, basin, electric towel rail, mirror and shaver socket

Both bedrooms have electric ceiling fans, clothes storage facilities and double patio doors leading onto the raised decking referred to earlier. They also have electric heaters. All beds have duvets and Egyptian cotton bed-linen. Two towels are provide for each guest.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a 4 ring gas hob, an eye level electric self cleaning oven, a microwave, a dishwasher, a fridge and ample storage for the full range of kitchen utensils (including toaster, kettle, coffee maker etc) and crockery provided. There is an electric heater and a sink,of course.

The utility room has a second fridge with a small freezer, a washing machine, an electric tumble drier (metered separately and not included in the rental price), a bread maker, airing and drying facilities and storage for the normal domestic utensils supplied (iron, ironing board, vacuum cleaner etc.)It also has a second sink.

The third bathroom has a walk in shower, WC and basin.

Outside there is a large courtyard with covered car parking for one vehicle and a portable BBQ is provided. The grounds are largely laid to grass (mowed regularly) which are unfenced. There are several mature trees in the grounds which provide shady picnic areas, and the grounds are bordered on three sides by plum trees and on the fourth by vines. (The plums are delicious, if you happen to be there in season).

Changeover day is Saturday. For booking form and T's and C's, please contact the owner direct. Payment can be made through Paypal for your convenience and peace of mind, but a surcharge will apply.

Nearest Airport : Bergerac at 30 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Duras at 2 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Vigier at 20 Kilometres Nearest Train : Ste Foy or Marmande at 24 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Duras at 2 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Arcachon at 130 Kilometres Car: necessary

Arcachon, on the Atlantic coast, is well worth the 90 minute drive. There are many attractive sea front restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood, and south of Arcachon bay you can visit the famous Dunes de Pyla (supposedly the largest sand dunes in Europe)which reach a height of over 100 metres and which offer spectacular views from the top.

The Pyrenees are about 3 hrs due south, and offer spectacular scenery and walking, and Biaritz on the Atlantic coast with it's famous Grand Plage (and the Spanish border) is about the same.

At Casteljaloux (45km south) there is a very popular spa with heated outdoor pools, steam rooms etc.

The 3 closest airports are Bergerac (45 minutes), Bordeaux (75 minutes) and Toulose (2 hours), all providing regular budget flights.

From St Malo, (overnight ferry from Portsmouth) Berticot is about a 6 hour drive (360 miles). If you're coming from the Channel Tunnel or Calais, it's about an 8.5 hour drive.

It is also possible to take the Eurostar to Paris and then the TGV to Bordeaux, where you can hire a car for the remainder of the journey.

Duras (the local village) is 2km from the property and is well served with shops, restaurants and bars.

Ste Foy la Grande and Marmande (both towns with all normal amenities) are both approximately 20km away.

Bordeaux (a must-see as the newly refurbished riverside is nearing completion) is 80km. It is possible to take the train to Bordeaux from nearby Ste Foy la Grande or Marmande, and then take the tram from Bordeaux station. There is also a spectacular train line along the Dordogne valley heading towards Sarlat.

For wine-lovers, the pretty medieval village of St Emilion is 45 km.away, and Monbazillac is just south of Bergerac (40kms). The chateau at Monbazillac is open to visitors, and many of the local producers in Duras sell direct to the public.

The whole region is famous for it's bastides, fortified villages built both by the French and the English during the hundred years war, many of which have survived largely intact.

Montpazier is probably the best known, but Lauzun, Issigeac, Villereal, Monflanquin and Eymet are fairly close, and all worth a visit.

There are many local markets including Monsegur (Friday), Ste Foy (Saturday), Bergerac (Saturday), La Reole (Saturday) and of course Duras (Monday). They are all completely different in size and character and are all very vibrant. Throughout the summer most villages, including Duras, have night markets as well.

There are currently 4 restaurants actually in Duras, and further afield there are restaurants in St Sernin (5kms), Villeneuve de Duras (8km), Marguron (10kms), Monsegur (10kms), Sauvetat le Dropt (15kms), Auriac (10kms), Allemans (10kms), Ste Foy la Grande(20kms), Marmande (20kms), and Bergerac (40kms). Details of many of the local restaurants are in the housebook in the cottage where comments have also been left by guests.

Duras has an excellent supermarket which is only 1km from the cottage and which also sells petrol. There are 2 banks with cashpoint machines in the village and a number of local shops including butchers and bakers, so there is really not much need to venture far away from Duras if you're looking for a relaxing holiday. There are 2 bars in the main square (both of which serve lunchtime snacks).

Both Ste Foy la Grande and Marmande have very large supermarkets - Ste Foy is by far the prettiest of the 2 towns although Marmande has a certain charm in the older part of the town. (both about 20kms)

It is possible to hire bikes in Duras (he speaks English) and although the countryside is certainly not flat, there are some wonderful bike rides.

The chateau in Duras is itself very interesting and hosts many events during the year, especially during the summer months. Details of these and other events and attractions in the local area can be found at the tourist office in Duras. There you will find a huge choice of things to do - canoeing on the Dordogne, horse riding, flying or gliding at Marmande, tennis, golf, etc. etc.

For music lovers the Monsegur 'weekend of swing' normally takes place on the first weekend of July. Duras celebrates one of it's own major events 'la fete de la Madeleine' around 14th July each year, and also has a wine fair (another major event) in August.

The pretty old town of Bergerac offers boat trips along the Dordogne, and the Roman town Perigeux boasts a magnificent cathedral and the remains of a Roman amphitheatre.

The Vezere valley has over 20 caves with pre-historic connections including the famous cave at Lascaux with its amazing paintings.

There are far too many places of interest in the Lot et Garonne to list here - in fact it has more brown `historic site` signboards than any other department in France, so a visit to the tourist information office is highly recommended.

Please note that the cottage is only available from May 14th until Sept 24th. Winter lets are not available

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The cottage is most suited to 1 or 2 couples and is really not suitable for small children owing to the unfenced pool and pond. The pool area is fully lit including underwater lighting, for evening use. The area abounds in wildlife including hares, deer, hoopoes, herons, buzzards etc. The pond contains lots of fish and frogs, and guests are asked to throw stale bread in when they can. Our neighbour has a large natural reservoir which you can walk to and which is home to thousands of frogs. The noise on some summer evenings is amazing and well worth the stroll. There are several fruit trees on the property (apples, cherries, damsons and of course plums) which guests are free to eat if they are in season.
