Cottage in Salema, Western Algarve, Portugal - Located At The Top Of The Old Quarter, 3 Minutes From The Beach And 4 Minutes From The Square

Dating from the early part of the last century, this traditional cottage is located at the top of the picturesque old part of Salema. It retains traditional features such as wooden shutters and terracotta tiled floors, but has been fully updated and recently redecorated. It has a secluded terrace with a shady area for outside living. It enjoys long reaching westerly sea views and lovely sunsets from the lower terrace.The upper terrace has town views There is a charming barbecue and a large marble table for outside eating. The property is 4 minutes walk from the centre of Salema which is a traditional fishing village with a lovely sandy beach with good swimming. The fishing boats are pulled up to unload their catches daily. Salema has several general provision shops, 6 restaurants, and an internet cafe, through which tours and taxis can be booked. There is a frequent bus service to Lagos and Sagres. veronica and I fell in love with Casa Lalla whilst visiting Salema in 2007.We bought it and named it after veronicas great Aunt Lalla.Lalla lovrd to visit the Algarve in the 1950s and 1960s,way before it became a big tourist destination.

We are the owners of Frondderw country house in Bala,North Wales,and have a reputable track record in the Hospitality industry.We normally spend the winter in Salema,enjoying the total peace and quiet of that time of year!!Indeed,we have yet to visit salema in the summer,an anomaly that we are keen to rectify once we have not got the responsibilities associated with our hotel.

Characterful cottage with great sun terrace.

We enjoyed a great stay in Salema at Casa Lalla. The cottage is in the old part of the village, a short distance up a steep street from the beach and restaurants. Because it is used by the owners, it comes with all the stuff you might hope to find - books, all cooking equipment, deck chairs, beach chairs, parasols, etc etc. There is a large sun terrace with a shaded area over a huge marble table. The beach at Salema is really good but, within a short distance, there are lots of even better ones. Good coast walking. There are lots of newer rental properties in the Salema area, we have stayed in one, but none with the character and position of Casa Lalla. We will be back!

casa Lalla is one of the few old properties left in the old quarter of Salema.It is two fishermans cottages knocked into one,with a small extension.We love the high ceiling in the lounge,with its velux windows letting in the sunshine. I love cooking,so the kitchen is better equipped than most.

Salema beach is 4 minutes walk. It is a golden sandy beach of about 1 km length. There is good fishing off the beach and several local restaurants feature bream and sea bass caught offshore. There is another completely unspoilt beach at Boca de Rey, which is 20 mins scenic walk or 5 mins by car. Salema beach is overlooked by 3 good seafood restaurants. There are many other beaches that can be reached by car within 20 minutes drive including good surfing beaches near Sagres, and the west.


Faro airport is about 1 hour's drive, mainly on good dual carriageway. Airport transfers cost from 63 euros;

Salema has a reliable and cheap bus service to Lagos and Sagres; A regular train and bus service runs to other parts of the Algarve from Lagos; There is an efficient local taxi service; cars can be hired at the airport or locally in Salema.To find the property enter the square in Salema and turn left up the Rue das Pescadores. Casa lalla is towards the top on the right,opposite no 12.


Lagos is 15 minutes by car

Sagre is 20 minutes by car

Cape St Vincent is 30 minutes by car

Carvoeiro is 35 minutes by car

Portimao is 35 minutes by car

Seville and Lisbon are both about 3 hours drive

There are tourist brochures bus and train timetables, boat trip brochures and other ideas for things to do in the cottage.

There is a big supermarket on the road to Lagos about 10 minutes drive away and everyday food and wine shops in the village within 5 minutes walk. Banks are located in Lagos and Vila do Bispo, but there is a money machine in the square in Salema within 5 minutes walk. There are craft shops in Salema and a small boutique. Salema property services in the square has cheap internet access, a tour booking service, bus and train timetables. Parking is available at the top of the village within 2 minutes walk or the cottage. Not to be missed is the weekly farmers market in Lagos on a Saturday morning, next to the bus depot. This is an old style market and is fascinating to visit. Whilst in Lagos you must also visit the fish market on the esplanade, for really fresh fish, shellfish, and traditional cuts of Portuguese meat; go early!In Salema there is a fresh bread and roll van in the central square from 9 to 10am,and fresh fish and vegetable vans visit regularly in the morning.There is a small daily fish and vegetable market in Vila do Bispo[10 minutes drive],a Lidl,and a good local butchers.

Free wi fi available in the Aventura bar 2 minutes walk down the Rua das Pescadores.

  • Notes on accommodation: We have a portable air cooler and a large portable fan; additionally one window in each living/ sleeping area has external mosquito protection which means that it can be left open at night; two portable electric radiators. No children under 12. No smokers. Outside: 141 square metres of terrace. A top terrace with netting and a large marble table for al fresco eating. There is also a barbecue area,and sunbeds for sunbathing. On the smaller lower terrace there are sea and sunset views, and a small table. The terraces are surrounded by shrubs and trees, and the walls have artisan tiling. Utility Room: A washing machine is located in an alcove by the front door Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels included. Property lightly cleaned once per week when occupied for more than a week and new linen and towels provided. Full changeover between bookings.. Other: there is a dressing room next to the bedroom with a large wardrobe and a chest of drawers
