About Gillie Elliot

My husband's great grandfather broke in the land around Balnakiel and Rhigolter and have farmed in the area since 1930.His family have been involved with sheep farming here and in the Borders, although he and his family live and work in the south. Rhigolter is a working farm with 1300 sheep. David and Gillie and their family have been coming up to Durness for 40 years.

Gillie Elliot purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Gillie Elliot chose Scottish Highlands & Islands

Carbreck was always a shepherd's cottage on the working farm and is still used for shepherds when needed.

Severel of the families in Durness whose father's where shepherd's on Balnakiel lived in the cottage.

What makes this cottage unique

It's huge three foot thick walls certainly make alterations a challenge!

The views across the valley are awe inspiring. You can go out and climb the hills, except 1-20th October when stalking is in progress or you can stoke the woodburner, put your feet up and read your book.Take time out to enjoy the pleasures of as little internet as possible.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Could not believe how much walking, swimming, birdwatching and kyacking we did in a week..

The description doesn't do this cottage justice, the facilities are second to none, it is the best stocked and most comfortable cottage that we have ever stayed in, the cleanliness and maintenance were immaculate, we have already recommended the cottage to other people and our family.

The area ia a hive of mystery every day shows something different, from deer, hawks, owls, rabbits galore, and sheep at the back door.

Have really enjoyed the holiday. The venison from the freezer was delicious. Even had weighing scales for the baking I did!

Three elements here"Accomodation,weather and fishing."

" A wonderful home from home,we all wish our kitchen had that amazing view"

"The cottage brought me back to my childhood in the highlands.Got married in Thurso, wedding pictures on the beach, had all our 6 Kids there too!"

"The beds were bliss!"
