Cottage in Mortagne Sur Gironde, Charente-Maritime - Peaceful Village Location, Walking Distance to the Port with its Restaurants and Marina

Detached cottage, in the peaceful village of Mortagne Sur Gironde with private heated pool including approved security pool alarm. Large fully enclosed garden with a superb built-in barbecue and terrace perfect for dining alfresco overlooking the fields and vineyards. In Mortagne there is a supermarket, bakers, butchers, pharmacy, bank, bar/tabac and tourist information. The port is a 10-15 min walk and has a number of restaurants which overlook the marina. The beaches of Meschers are only 15 mins away. Europe's largest zoo in La Palmyre, Aquarium in La Rochelle and an indoor pool complex in Jonzac and popular golf course further along the coast as well as other beaches with watersports. Superb area for walking and cycling with routes mapped out and the majority off road through the fields and vineyards.

About Victoria Adkins

My husband is a retired London firefighter and I work as an Office Manager in an infant school. We are still as busy as we every were but both enjoy relaxing together when we can. We have been married for over 32 years and have four children and now a wonderful Grandson who we visit as often as we can. He lives in Devon so we have a very long journey each time. I have lived in Leigh on Sea, Essex since I was 7 having been living in Northants previously. My husband and I bought our first house together in Leigh on Sea and love living here. It is a very vibrant town with lots to do.

Why Victoria Adkins chose Mortagne-sur-Gironde

We bought a plot of land originially and had the house built as when we started looking at properties to purchase we were advised by a local estate agent this would be a better option. She turned out to be correct. Having a new build we did not have to worry about renovating an older property without the time to do it. The village of Mortagne was perfect for us. Whilst remaining quiet in our part of the village within a short walk to the Port you can enjoy the bustling marina and its restaurants etc.

We had enjoyed many a holiday in this part of France when our children were small and thought wouldnt it be lovely to be able to come back all the time. We were fortunate to find a very lovely architect company and estate agent who helped with the search of the land and support with the build of the property. They both spoke very good English and this was an immense help during the process.

What makes this cottage unique

We loved this house mainly because of the views over the vineyards and the peace and quiet we get when we come over to stay. It is our very own French Country Cottage.

What we really liked it the fact we have a beautiful cottage in a wonderful village that has all the modern conveniences of a new home. It has been very easy to maintain which is very important when renting out to holiday makers. We want our guests to experience a home from home time without any worries. We think our guests feel the same and we continue to receive very good reviews.

When we visit after the summer season has finished I am always amazed how you wouldn't know I have had a busy season with lots of guests. Everything seems to be very well looked after by our guests. I do have a very good property manager who looks after my changeovers and guests which does make a big difference.

If you are thinking of booking with us you wont be disappointed.

Outside: Large enclosed garden with private heated in ground 8m x 4m pool. Built-in BBQ terrace, table and sunloungers. Utility Room: Washing machine and separate beer fridge in utility room. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels included. The property is cleaned at every changeover.

Beautiful and Peaceful

The house was lovely and had plenty of room for the four of us. The kids loved the pool, we could hardly keep them out of it. It was all very clean and well looked after and the welcome pack was a nice touch after such a long drive. The walk to the port was a bit further than we expected and it is quite a steep hill to walk back up. We really enjoyed our stay here, it was nice to be able to relax and do practically nothing for two weeks.

We have booked again!

The villa is just as described, with a fully fenced garden and pool that was lovely and warm, even on slightly cooler days. The location is excellent with the beach not far away. The villa is situated in a lovely quiet position, but not at all remote and only a short walk to the go into the village, where there are a variety of shops. It was great to be able to take a short stroll out in the mornings for bread and croissants. For a larger shop the super U supermarket a short drive away was great and had everything we needed.

Perfect country cottage in a beautiful location

We had a really wonderful holiday here! The house is lovely - spacious, stylish and fully equipped with everything you could ever need. The location is fantastic! The garden is surrounded by open countryside, so it feels very peaceful and secluded - perfect for relaxing by the pool and eating outside. We loved it so much that we spent a few days of our one week stay just chilling out here. The house is only a ten minute walk from the village which is very pretty and has all the basics. It was so nice to be able to stroll down there in the morning to buy fresh bread from the bakery. We also had some great days out - there is so much to do in the surrounding area! Beaches, beautiful towns and villages and the incredible côte sauvage – well worth the hour drive to be able to walk through the pine forest and sand dunes to the breathtaking Atlantic coast! We self-catered a lot as there is so much wonderful produce available in the local markets and supermarkets but we also had great food in the restaurants in the port. A week really wasn't long enough to explore everything this area has to offer. We will definitely be back!

lovely well equipped property in good location

We enjoyed our September stay in this lovely spacious property. The whole property was large and stylish with attention to detail which is lovely for a rental property. It was great having such reliable wifi and British TV for the darker evenings. We would recommend it to anyone looking for peace and quiet but still have access to amenities. Great to be able to wander into the village for a baguette or bottle of wine!! The pool was lovely and given the time of year was heated to a nice temperature! The area is beautiful for walking or cycling with Mescheurs a particular favourite. Local restaurants served good food at reasonable prices with loads of fish on the menu which was a delight!! Would highly recommend.

Fantastic Cottage in a lovely setting

What a fantastic setting this cottage has. The photos just don't do justice to this pretty cottage and its surroundings.

The living / dining space was large and bright, with a well equipped kitchen. The pool was fantastic and we enjoyed it so much we didn't didn't really need to venture out too far. We would have liked the pool a degree or two warmer, but this is only because of the breeze (a relief on the extra hot days we had). The garden is huge and what a view! Vineyards at the back, very quintessentialy French. Our children had stacks of space to have many games of football, pétanque, quoits, and even badminton ( with the sets from the supplied box).

The area felt safe, and our eldest children loved walking into the village to buy croissant and bread for the day.

Having a big supermarket close by meant we were able to cater 'in house' most evenings and we enjoyed several BBQ on the patio watching the sun set with obligatory glasses of rosé !

The local pizza place Chez Feu-Feu was great. Their pizzas were large and stacked with toppings ( we had to save some for the next day).

If there was one thing we would love to see in the future, it would be an outside shower and toilet. This is only my preference as don't like people coming straight out the pool and going through the cottage wet, especially with tile flooring.

All in all our stay was fantastic. The weather was very kind and the cottage was spotless. Vikki made sure that we had all the information we needed to have a great stay, and was always quick to respond to e-mails. We hope to be able to be able come back again.

A fantastic holiday

An excellent holiday home, very well equipped making self catering a breeze. On arrival the beds were made up and the house was spotlessly clean. A great little village with great bakers, butchers and well equipped COOP. We have rented many holiday homes, but this one was by far the best in terms of comfort. Spent the days dipping in and out of the pool as the weather was fantastic. The port is where we went for afternoon ice creams and demi carafes of wine. The kids loved the pool. The beds were very comfy and a great bathroom with plenty of hot water for showering. This is a great area for exploring the SW of France. Saintes and Cognac are well worth a visit. We travelled down to Bordeaux which is a beautiful city and well worth the hour drive. A short walk from the house is a great vineyard that sells and allows you to taste some fantastic wines and cognac. There is also a good Pinueau producer. We would definitely recommend this property for a kicked back chilled holiday. Vicky the owner was also very helpful with advice on travelling from the UK to the house. For the first time this year we took the tunnel the day before and stayed in Le Mans at Mr Beds (as recommended by Vicky) not only did this make a difference on the driving from the port, but it was also economical and we got to see more of this beautiful country. If you are reading this review go for it and hopefully you will have a great holiday like we did.

Special interest holidays:

Mortagne and surrounding area have excellent bike rides. Set routes and maps are available with a rating of difficulty. Bikes can be hired and delivered directly to the property. See www.bikehiredirect.com


The nearest beach is 20 mins drive and is pretty and sandy. There are numerous beaches along the Atlantic coast within a short drive. Some are isolated and private and approached through pine forests and some (around Royan for example) are developed, with restaurants, cafes and other facilities like wetsuit and water-sports equipment hire outlets etc. The beaches on the two Islands, Isle de Re and Isle D'Oleron are magnificent, undeveloped and spacious.


La Rochelle and Bordeaux airports are approximately 55 miles away . From Calais (ferry) and La Coquelles (Eurotunnel) it is approx. 520 miles or 8 hours driving time. A car is essential if you wish to explore the area.


Mortagne sur Gironde is approximately 6km from Gemozac, 10 min drive to. Royan, and Saints around a half hour drive, Bordeaux and La Rochelle around and hours drive to city centres, depending upon the traffic and route taken.

Further Details:

Please note that there is a bakers, supermarket, butchers, pharmacy and ATM all a short walk from the house. Down in the port, there is a yatching marina with restaurants and a bar, again all just a walk away. It is an ideal location to enjoy some peace and quiet whilst having all the necessary shops and restaurants close by.

Notes on prices:
Prices are for the property per week in UK Pounds. No additional charge will be made for heating the pool this has been included in the total price. Winter lets will be charged for use of electricity and water. Discounts available for long winter lets.
