Converted Water Mill With Private Pool

Updated: 22-May-2016
Watermill near Ponte de Lima, Costa Verde - Idyllic Location, Rural Yet Just 10 Minutes From Portugal's Oldest Town.

Casa do Lagar is a rustic property that allows guests to feel as if they have escaped from it all as it is nestled in a quiet valley surrounded by fields and vineyards with a stream running alongside the house. There are pleasant walks from the front door and guests are more likely to see an ox and cart come down the lane than another car. Yet it is perfectly situated for exploring the Minho region and is just 10 minutes drive from lovely Ponte de Lima with its restaurants, cafes and many activities (canoeing, cycling, gardens, river beaches, market).

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The villa, facilities, setting and service were fantastic. The photos on the internet do not do it justice. We really had one of our best breaks. We really liked north Portugal and with 5 teenagers the shops, pool and weather kept them happy. The weather and scenery and food were excellent. Your information guide was very helpful and we did almost all on the list." Aug 07.

"This spot is so beautiful! We've had a lovely week: the children are in paradise!". Aug 07

"The three generations have spent a fabulous time here. A beautiful house and idyllic surroundings." Aug 08

"Having Lucia come each morning to make the breakfast has made the week event more relaxing." Aug 08

"Your house is in a fantastic setting, and it was a lovely sight when we returned to it at the end of a day’s exploring." Nov 12

The Mill

  • 5 of 5

In need of a peaceful retreat with lots to do then Casa do Lagar is for you. Built into the rock along side of the mountain stream the mill has a character of its own. It has excellent facilities plenty of room well equipped kitchen replace items before you leave.Bed linen, bathroom and swimming towels are provided. The mill is beautifully kept and well maintained it has a secluded pool with fruit trees The agent is a phone call away to sort any problems arrange excursions etc. There is a detailed information pack which contains all the information needed to make your stay a fantastic one. The area has lots of things to do and see, from sport activities for the energetic to relaxing beaches a short drive away. Ponte de LIma is a lovely town with lots of places to eat portions are large and reasonably priced the Portuguese are very friendly and helpful. A trip to Porto is well worth it a sightseeing bus river trip and to end the day a tour around the many port caves. We had a wonderful time and would definitely reccomend the mill

Somewhere very special

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for something a bit different and very VERY special, then look no further. As soon as you arrive at the historic mill you are transported back to a time when life was simple and lived at an altogether slower pace......where the only sound is the babbling brook and bird song and the view is of vineyards, woods and local people moving freshly cut grass on an oxen drawn cart .

The mill itself provides spacious accommodation for 10 and the Ponte de Lima area provides loads of exciting things to do for everyone.....from sandy beaches....to vibrant markets and local culture and cuisine.

This is a place of childhood dreams and family memories. We came just my husband and I and had a superb week of escapism.....but it is also a place to bring your children and grandchildren .

A lovely site, well hidden away, walks and beach all within easy reach. Ponte de Lima is a lovely town to visit and have a meal or whatever. Don't worry as you go down the track - it is tucked away at the end!

Lovely Family Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time at Casa do Lagar and would thoroughly recommend this tranquil villa for anyone wanting to get away from it all.A typical day would begin with an all-hands family breakfast in the generously equipped family kitchen, (complete with range-style wood-burning oven), perfect for family dinners and supplemented with a gas oven. We would walk off breakfast with a gentle stroll through the idyllic Portuguese countryside, passing through rustic vineyards and along bubbling streams before returning to the villa for a glass of port, cheese and ham in the sun by the villa’s private pool. The local town, Ponte de Lima, is a charming place with a huge fortnightly market, and is less than 10 minutes by car. The town is bisected by the Lima river, which provides opportunities for swimming and fishing, although the Roman baths just outside of town made for a warmer swim.We will definitely be returning to Casa do Lagar soon!

Peace and relaxation

  • 5 of 5

Great house with fantastic outside space in a beautiful and undiscovered corner of Portugal, far from the tourist crowds. The stream is idyllic. Lots of walking to be done here, and up and down the Lima valley, and in the national park. We tried geocaching which took us to new places. The walk along the Lima banks was beautiful, especially the watermills with the local cafe. Jose, Manuel and Maria were really helpful and on hand if we needed help. Thanks for a great stay. We hope to come back soon.

Amazing time at Casa do Lagar!

  • 5 of 5

The photos don't do this place justice. The house is beautiful and set in a very private location with all the facilities you could need.

We especially loved sitting in the sun by the stream enjoying a BBQ and a glass of the local wine while the kids spent hours entertained, paddling around and playing in the garden.

In the mornings we would take a short stroll up the lane to collect fresh bread and rolls for breakfast from the local convenience store, followed by an early dip in the pool.

We spent a lot of time in Ponte de Lima which has a lot to offer, especially the huge fortnightly market, and we also explored into Spain which was easily reached.

We cannot recommend Casa do Lagar highly enough and will most certainly be revisiting soon....in fact, we have already booked it for a family birthday later on this year!

From the Owner

We fell in love with the Ponte de Lima area while on holiday when the children were still babies. The region has so much to offer: long sandy beaches, the national park, canoeing or swimming in the rivers as well as ancient towns with plenty of fiestas. And Ponte de Lima itself is idyllic with the river running under the Roman bridge, the old square and excellent restaurants. Ponte de Lima is also an ideal base for exploring the whole region as it is centrally placed with easy access to beaches, the national park, down to Porto or up into Spain.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

There are an increasing number of good restaurants in this part of Portugal, usually making the most of the local ingredients. Ponte de Lima is becoming a hub for good local cuisine. We can suggest half a dozen restaurants we'd definitely recommend for a special meal; and there are plenty more that serve good value, hearty Portuguese food.

Ponte de Lima offers canoeing and cycle hire, regular festivals and markets. There is excellent walking in the Peneda-Geres National Park and also in the Serra de Arga, both easily accessible from the mill.

There is good surfing at Afife beach among other places. Surfing lessons (including for children) is offered at Cabadelo beach and at Afife.

We can help arrange special interest activities through our agent, such as meals in an 11th century castle, guided walking in the hills, cooking experiences and bird watching.

It is an easy 30 mins' drive to lovely sandy beaches at the coast. We can recommend good beaches, including ones especially suitable for children. There are also river beaches along the river Lima just 5-10 minutes' drive away, and along the Minho river which marks the border with Spain. Hot springs are about one hour's drive away, with a stop at the historic castle of Lindoso.

The property is less than an hour’s easy drive from Porto (Air Portugal from Heathrow and Gatwick, Ryanair from Stansted, Liverpool, Glasgow and Bristol, Easyjet from Gatwick). Or Ryanair also fly from Stansted to Santiago de Compostela in Spain which is about 2 hours’ drive from the property. You can also fly to Vigo in Spain which is closer to the mill than Porto. Car hire is essential.

It is only a 5-10 minute drive to Ponte de Lima and 30 minutes to Viana do Castelo. The property is ideally placed for exploring the lovely Minho region - a half hour drive east takes you to the coast and wide, sandy beaches and a half hour west are beautiful mountains with great walking in the Peneda-Gêres National Park. To the north is the Spanish border, with fortified towns on both sides of the river Minho and a short drive south takes you to historic towns such as Guimaraes and Barcelos.

Further Details:

For more photos of the area, find us on Facebook (casadolagaronlima).

There is a small local shop 5 minutes' walk from the property, otherwise Ponte de Lima provides shops, supermarkets, banks, cafes and restaurants. Ponte de Lima is the oldest town in Portugal and has a very pretty setting with pedestrianised areas, gardens, open air swimming pool, a town square with cafes, ancient bridge over the river, river beaches, fortnightly market. Horse riding and cycle hire are available with a new cycle path along the river Lima. There are also numerous opoprtunities for running and for geocaching with marked routes and caches available online.

From the Owner

It was important to us to find somewhere close to Ponte de Lima and yet we also wanted to feel as if we had escaped from it all. As soon as we saw Casa do Lagar we knew we had found the ideal property. It is in a very peaceful spot, nestled in a quiet valley surrounded by trees and fields. All we hear is the soft babble of the stream. And yet we are just 10 minutes from Ponte de Lima and the motorways so it is easy to get around the region. Meanwhile the children are so busy playing in the stream, the surrounding woods and the pool that they are happy not to go anywhere at all!
