Just as Great 2nd Time Around

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week in August. I wrote a review last year so this one will be a bit shorter as its still delightful.

Kayaking and Cycling still the order of the day in between coffee and food. It was very hot this year so the river was wonderful to stop the children melting. The garden has sun and shade for relaxing in between swims and the house can be kept cool for a break for the sun. there is a lot of casual space for sitting around reading, playing cards etc. The Kitchen is well equipped for cooking inside or on the BBQ.

Brantome and Bourdeilles are two lovely spots, the former is bigger than the latter and well equipped if you need.

This year we visited Aubeterre-sur-Dronne for the first time and can recommend it if you want a trip out to explore. The cafes are very nice and the river beach is popular with families as it has sand, easy swimming and water fun and a small cafe.

Saint-Jean-de-Côle in the opposite direction is a historic place again worth a trip out. This one is more for the historic buildings and a gentle amble.

Another first this year was also the evening market (Marche Nocturne) at Montagrier. A small affair but with a couple of hot food stalls plus local ale, wine and other produce as well as seating in the square and some live entertainment made for a very pleasant Friday evening.

Recommended again.

A marvellous setting for relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Our family of two adults and two children (6 & 8) stayed here for two weeks from 01/08/15 and it was, in short, delightful.

The barn is in a very quiet hamlet that on a sunny day has more canoes pass by on the river than cars along the road. We spent days playing cricket in the garden, which I think amused the neighbours when it was 30+ degrees and the cooling off in the river at the bottom of the garden. There is of course a BBQ and a perfectly good kitchen so most of our trips out were for fresh bread and coffee. Lisle is the nearest village which can provide both - the patisserie is lovely - but there are many other lovely places within a short drive or a longer cycle. Bourdeilles and Brantome are both worth a visit as is Montagrier. The barn has two sit on top kayaks and four bycycles available to hire at a very very reasonable rate so with those and some sunshine it great. A very short paddle upstream is a weir of an old mill which attracts lots of splashing about, as does the mini beach with slide and diving board into the river at Lisle, a little further by water, but down stream.

Bourdeilles and Brantome have some very nice restaurants that serve some excellent local produce as does the beautiful Moulin du Pont that is on the river at Lisle.

We did not do lots of sightseeing in hot weather with little ones but there are many châteaux around and Perigueux is not far away for a larger town.

Our dealings with the Damerhams were simple and easy. The barn is looked after by a friend of theirs who is the neighbour and she was also very helpful and welcoming.

Would certainly recommend the Barn. There are a lot of premises for rent out but this one is excellent value for money considering the river is at the foot of the garden.

Lovely relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We were here for just over a week, loved everything about it. The barn itself is fabulous and very well equipped. The garden with the deck looking out over the river makes the perfect place for long leisurely lunches, we were even joined by a red squirrel some days! We ate out in the rear courtyard most evenings, watching the bats flying under the trees.

We had perfect weather so spent a lot of time just relaxing by the river, reading, eating and drinking, but also had trips to Perigueux, Riberac and Brantome, all very local and with lovely markets. We had a lovely (if rather hot!) walk around Montagrier and a delicious lunch at the restaurant there. We didn't use the bikes or kayaks but may well do so next time and it's great that they are available, especially for guests with children.

Annie was very helpful throughout our stay, especially when we arrived very late because of a puncture on our arrival day!

I have already recommended this property to friends and we certainly hope to return in the future. It is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the beautiful countryside.

Pure bliss

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at the Riverside Barn and we enjoyed it even more this time. The house has all you need for a comfortable stay with thoughtful touches like tea and coffee, dishwasher tablets and plenty of towels. The kitchen is well equipped and you can cook proper meals (a rarity in holiday accommodation in our experience) or barbeque and then eat in the lovely shady terrace.

We had great weather with a dramatic storm one night. Although my favourite thing is to sit next to the river and read, the kids did lots of kayaking and my husband and teenagers kayaked to Bordeilles and back one afternoon. Having kayaks and bikes available is brilliant as you don't need to bring all your own kit.

We found many me things to do in the local area this time and enjoyed tips to Brantome, Perigeux and Tocane (lovely market) and decided that a week just isn't long enough.

It was so relaxing, thank you for letting us stay. As last time, Annie was really helpful and made our stay very enjoyable. We love it in Lonlaygue and will definitely be back.

Fabulous Place

  • 5 of 5

This was a fabulous find!

The photo's do not do it justice. Inside, the converted barn is very well appointed and comfortable but also very spacious. The beds were very comfortable (the double bed is actually a large double/king size) The large garden is, which leads down to the river, is lovely. We made use of the kayak's. Paddling up river to the weir and 'jacuzzi' then drifting back down to the property, was idyllic!

Annie, the lady who welcomed us, was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay.
