About the Owner

I bought an oldish 1930's house in Sintra, free-standing, on three floors and with a view to the north as far as the eye can see. The renovation process is an ongoing project. Two olive trees in front are already bearing fruit and the little flat on the ground floor is an independent space with a large sunny terrace for visitors which has been popular with travellers from many parts of the world. I am a photographer and am happy to go out with visitors at no extra charge on short walks in the area. This is especially directed at single people travelling alone while still unfamiliar with the area.

‘We enjoyed staying at this apartment. The accommodation is comfortable and well appointed, and provided a great base to explore Sintra and Lisbon. The apartment is an easy walk to the train station and to shops and other facilities. Karin is a wonderful host, who went to special effort to make us feel at home. We would definitely stay there again. Highly recommended.’ Jane and Stephen Fincham. Australia.

“A comfortable, well-equipped apartment with character in an excellent location”

4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago for a stay in September 2014

We stayed in the apartment for 12 nights in early September. Karin (the owner) met us at the airport and also took us to the supermarket. The apartment was bigger than we expected with a separate kitchen, combined living and dining area, a bedroom and bathroom. Outdoor space comprised sole use of a big terrace (both sun and shade) with furniture, barbeque and extensive views. We could just see the towers of the palace at Mafra in the distance.

The apartment is five minutes walk from the market hall (fresh fish and excellent pastries) the museum of modern art and the stop for the antique tram which runs at weekends down to the coast at Praia de Macas. An easy walk will take you to the main train station (40 minutes into Lisbon) and then downhill into the historic centre. We enjoyed this walk, which has great views across the town - and we appreciated being away from the tourist traffic.

Sintra is a perfect base for a holiday. We found plenty to do in the town itself - we loved the forest walking paths up to and around the castle and the Pena palace as well as exploring the pretty Sao Pedro district (worth a trip for a good lunch). A local bus service links all the palaces if you don't fancy the walk. The weather was good during our stay, with plenty of sun, but the mist can descend from the mountains - which is part of Sintra's romantic appeal.

Thank you for your hospitality Karin - we had a wonderful holiday.

The Mystical Magic of Sintra

  • 5 of 5

Our hostess was incredibly helpful at the planning stage of our trip.

Our aim was to tour Portugal excluding the Algarve and she provided us with expert advice which we based our journey on.

Her accommodation complemented perfectly the wonderful setting of Sintra with its mystical castle, palaces and museums planted in thickly wooded hills. To the west a variety of sandy Atlantic beaches, to the east the grossly underestimated delights and history of Lisbon, either direction attainable comfortably and frequently for less than 5 euros (return journey) on Portugal's efficient transport system.

The advertisement for the appartment was reassuringly totally accurate. It was clean and well maintained. The appartment was well equipt and offered a very secure environment. The centre was 10 minutes walk away as were local bars, restaurants and shops. Restaurants covered an incredibly wide price range in Sintra. In fact one of our favourite eating places offered a menu of a main, a drink and a coffee for 5 euros.

We received a warm welcome to Sintra from the owner. She was always at hand for any help or advice but was never in any way intrusive. Her in depth knowledge of the local and national geography/ history/ music scene was a major contributor to the immense success of our holiday. Her English is word and accent perfect thanks to her worldwide life experiences.

This is a location and accommodation we cannot stop recommending to our friends and family since our return to the UK. The Portuguese hospitality, food, places of interest belong in the top division.

Good service and nice apartement

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a week and I was sorry we had to leave. This apartment is perfect if you are a couple visiting Lisbon or Sintra and if you prefer a quiet place of your own with a nice terrace. The apartment had everything we needed to be comfortable and feel at home. The ceiling was a bit low for my 2.03 cm boyfriend, and it is not very big so not fit for more than 3 people. The furbishing is simple but clean and complete. The bed was good, we cooked small meals we bought at the markets, watched a dvd and spent lovely hours on the big sunny terrace. Perfect to explore Sintra, Lisbon and beaches even without a car, with buses and the tram to the beach within 5 minutes walking distance. The host Karin is friendly and professional and committed to making your stay comfortable. If asked she will give you all the tips and information for a great stay in Portugal. We actually became acquainted and loved to spend some time with her since she is a very educated, creative and interesting person. We would be happy to stay here for longer periods of time and hope to come back someday.

Owner's Response: Thank you Marieke for taking the time to send this review. I was very sorry to drop you off at the train station when you left.....and will be delighted to see you here again. You were both very charming and amusing to spend time with.... interesting to hear about your lives and occupations. Perhaps next time you will stay upstairs in the apartment with high ceilings! The downstairs apartment is only for two people....a couple...or a single person, we can also accommodate one baby. Three adults or more children would be too crowded. The two apartments can be connected by an internal stairway for larger families or more people. Thank you Eerts for fixing my computer! Warm abrazos from Karin

From the Owner

Coming to Portugal from Africa, this house, in spite of its dilapidated state, gave me the sense of space I needed while still being very close to Lisbon and the coast in an almost rural area with a long and interesting history. Trains, buses, shops, markets, a modern art museum and theatre, all within minutes walking distance. Lisbon, 25 kms away, is within very easy reach by car or train. The coast is 12 kms and boasts some of Portugal's loveliest beaches. Great hikes Winter and Summer. The apartment is an ideal pied-a-terre from which to explore Portugal, a base for the young and young in spirit. It is possible to spend a day in Porto and be back home at night travelling by train with one easy changeover in Lisbon. By car excellent highways take you north or south with ease.

Activity and Interests

Car: not necessary

Sintra is an ideal pied-a-terre Summer and Winter. Amazing hikes along the coast or through fairytale forests, past ancient monastries, and castles. Lisbon is easily reached by suburban train between 06am. and 02am. The apartment is in a quiet residential area although very near train and bus stations.

English, Portuguese, German spoken. French, Spanish and Italian understood. Ideal location for the single traveller. Especial attention given to women travelling alone, i.e. free airport pick-up and a guided outing in the Sintra area. Guide also to Lisbon at very reduced cost.

We offer short 2 hour informal introductory courses: Portuguese language, history, and a cooking session of a Portuguese dish ..more details on enquiry. Please make sure you have read the apartment details here and the available extra options. There is a heating charge in Winter, paid on arrival, of 50€ per week or 7€ per day, for two oil heaters. Wood for the wood-burner is free for the first load...for about three days then an extra 5€ per load.

The Atlantic coastline and the Estoril and Cascais beaches are all easily accessible either by car or bus. About 12kms. Bus and train time-tables and road maps supplied. All the beaches on this coast have excellent restaurants and cafés, either overlooking the sea or close by. In Summer a renovated early 20th C. electric tram runs from close-by to the coast on weekends.Electric bikes and scooters can be rented daily for longer excursions.

The distance to the Lisbon international airport is approx 30km. Pickups from the airport can be arranged if booked well in advance, please contact us for details. Commercial taxi fare from the airport is about 40 euros. Now there is also the Uber option.....Public transport : metro connection from the airport to Lisbon, easily connects to the Sintra train. Details given on request by e-mail. Depending on how far you intend to travel and the time available, a car is not necessary.

The distance to Lisbon is about 26km and out of rush hour about 25 minutes by car on a good highway. A train runs every 20 minutes and takes 40 minutes to central Lisbon and underground connections. There are two train stations each about 10 minutes walk from the house. From Sintra, many interesting day trips can be made either by car or bus. We will be glad to help plan excursions, to places and events of interest, send you a list of events taking place during your stay, and make bookings.

Further Details:Autumn and Winter breaks, great for forest or coastal hikes. Easy access to the coast with many seafood restaurants. There is a wide choice of interesting day trips or hikes for all seasons. On Winter evenings light a caste-iron woodburner for a very warm and cosy dinner at home or, weather permitting, barbecue outside on the terrace.

Lisbon centre easy to reach, provides exciting nightlife and amazing graze and...fado.

In the immediate area shops, banks, and a market for fresh produce, bakery, cafés and restaurants are all within a few minutes walking distance.

The 'Feira' at Sao Pedro de Sintra on second and last Sunday every month, colourful and wide-ranging, from flea market section to factory reject clothes, local cheese, chorizos, olives and bread.

Sintra provides an ideal base from which to discover the immense variety Portugal has to offer. It is possible to go as far as Porto and be back in Sintra on the same day by fast train or by car.
