Sintra is the centre of a World Heritage site surrounded by wooded hills and facing the Atlantic coast about 12 km away by road. It has a unique climate, cool in Summer, mild and romantically misty in Winter. The predominantly 19th C. urban architecture, luxuriant trees and parks, historic royal Summer palaces give central Sintra its distinctive character. The town is overlooked by the ruins of a fortress dating back to the Almoravid/Almohad occupation of the region. A small comfortable garden apartment on the fringe of the historic centre, superior backpacker for grownups, a large terrace has a portable bbq , loungers, table and chairs, sunshades and a view into the distance. . A few minutes walk to train and bus stations. Trains easily connect to central Lisbon (Rossio), run every 20 mins., seamlessly link to underground network, until 02.00a.m. An excellent bus network with a wide choice of towns villages and beaches offer a relaxed way of getting around. It is possible to go to Porto and be back on the same day by fast train. This apartment is on the ground floor of a large free-standing private house. Semi-rural atmosphere with a basic kitchen for breakfast and smallish meals. Restaurants and cafés of all prices abound in the area. A car is not needed and we offer airport pickups and shopping trips. contact us for more details.

Winter:The garden apartment is small and cosy in Winter when the woodburner should be lit in the evenings. Easily done and keeps the apartment warm. Oil heaters are also an option at an extra charge. In summer cool inside and sunny on the terrace. The entirely independent apartment is the ground floor of the house and has its own entrance and doorbell. Light meals can be made and all basic equipment is provided as in description above. Take picnic lunches out with you in the backpack provided.There are many restaurants and cafés in the area for excellent food and wines of the region. Evenings can be spent in the Sintra historic centre, with many restaurants, cafes and bars, Cascais/Estoril, 12 kms away by car, Lisbon from which the last train runs at 2am. For stay-ins, DVD movies, books to read , candle-light dinners, barbecue on the terrace.. The Sintra - Colares area food and wine superb. Excellent restaurants with wide price ranges abound in the area. Lisbon centre, 25 km away by road, 40 minutes by rail. Trains run at 20 minute intervals and connect to the Lisbon Underground system. Lisbon trains run until 2a.m. Cascais and Estoril about 13 kms away. Buses run regularly to coastal towns and beaches. Azenhas do Mar, Adraga, Ericeira and many more. I bought an oldish 1930's house in Sintra, free-standing, on three floors and with a view to the north as far as the eye can see. The renovation process is an ongoing project. Two olive trees in front are already bearing fruit and the little flat on the ground floor is an independent space with a large sunny terrace for visitors which has been popular with travellers from many parts of the world. I am a photographer and am happy to go out with visitors at no extra charge on short walks in the area. This is especially directed at single people travelling alone while still unfamiliar with the area.

Coming to Portugal from Africa, this house, in spite of its dilapidated state, gave me the sense of space I needed while still being very close to Lisbon and the coast in an almost rural area with a long and interesting history. Trains, buses, shops, markets, a modern art museum and theatre, all within minutes walking distance. Lisbon, 25 kms away, is within very easy reach by car or train. The coast is 12 kms and boasts some of Portugal's loveliest beaches. Great hikes Winter and Summer. The apartment is an ideal pied-a-terre from which to explore Portugal, a base for the young and young in spirit. It is possible to spend a day in Porto and be back home at night travelling by train with one easy changeover in Lisbon. By car excellent highways take you north or south with ease.

The apartment is ideally situated for exploring all the amazing variety Portugal has to offer. Access to Lisbon and to the coastal towns is easy and well organisable with or without a car. A very affordable taxi service is also available at hourly or daily rates..

The house is in a quiet cul-de-sac facing and unimpeded view to the horizon.

We stayed in the apartment for 12 nights in early September. Karin (the owner) met us at the airport and also took us to the supermarket. The apartment was bigger than we expected with a separate kitchen, combined living and dining area, a bedroom and bathroom. Outdoor space comprised sole use of a big terrace (both sun and shade) with furniture, barbeque and extensive views. We could just see the towers of the palace at Mafra in the distance.



The apartment is five minutes walk from the market hall (fresh fish and excellent pastries) the museum of modern art and the stop for the antique tram which runs at weekends down to the coast at Praia de Macas. An easy walk will take you to the main train station (40 minutes into Lisbon) and then downhill into the historic centre. We enjoyed this walk, which has great views across the town - and we appreciated being away from the tourist traffic.



Sintra is a perfect base for a holiday. We found plenty to do in the town itself - we loved the forest walking paths up to and around the castle and the Pena palace as well as exploring the pretty Sao Pedro district (worth a trip for a good lunch). A local bus service links all the palaces if you don't fancy the walk. The weather was good during our stay, with plenty of sun, but the mist can descend from the mountains - which is part of Sintra's romantic appeal.

Notes on accommodation: There are many very modestly priced restaurants a short walk away and interesting choice of food and wine in Sintra and surrounding area, coastal villages and of course Lisbon. If you are travelling with a very small child please contact us for more details before making a reservation. This is the perfect base from which to make day trips in the area or further away...it is possible to go to Porto or Evora and be back on the same day, either by car or public transport. Trains and busses inexpensive and comfortable. We are happy to make suggestions for day trips if you gives us details of your interests. The coast near Sintra has several beautiful beach areas with excellent restaurants.....bracing seaside walks in Winter end in a delicious seafood dish in warm and cosy restaurants.... Outside: The ground floor terrace is furnished with tables, chairs and loungers, sunshades and a movable barbecue.

I loved my apartment and time in Sintra. Karin picked me up at the airport and took me directly to a grocery store and showed me a little about Sintra. She is a delightful host and I would recommend this lovely place to anyone looking to stay in Sintra. She also showed me beaches and places that I would not have seen on my own. If anyone wants to talk to me about my stay I'd be very happy to talk to anyone. Again Thank you for a wonderful month at Pied-a-terre.

Owner's Response: Joan Harris was a delightful guest from near Chicago USA, always cheerful and enterprising. It was a pleasure to have her staying here for one month. I was sorry when she had to leave. Undaunted by the quirky weather in February she was out every day making friends with the people in shops and restaurants around Sintra, all of I am sure were sorry to see her leave......as was the taxi driver who took her on trips of discovery up the coast.

The Mystical Magic of Sintra

Our hostess was incredibly helpful at the planning stage of our trip.

Our aim was to tour Portugal excluding the Algarve and she provided us with expert advice which we based our journey on.

Her accommodation complemented perfectly the wonderful setting of Sintra with its mystical castle, palaces and museums planted in thickly wooded hills. To the west a variety of sandy Atlantic beaches, to the east the grossly underestimated delights and history of Lisbon, either direction attainable comfortably and frequently for less than 5 euros (return journey) on Portugal's efficient transport system.

The advertisement for the appartment was reassuringly totally accurate. It was clean and well maintained. The appartment was well equipt and offered a very secure environment. The centre was 10 minutes walk away as were local bars, restaurants and shops. Restaurants covered an incredibly wide price range in Sintra. In fact one of our favourite eating places offered a menu of a main, a drink and a coffee for 5 euros.

We received a warm welcome to Sintra from the owner. She was always at hand for any help or advice but was never in any way intrusive. Her in depth knowledge of the local and national geography/ history/ music scene was a major contributor to the immense success of our holiday. Her English is word and accent perfect thanks to her worldwide life experiences.

This is a location and accommodation we cannot stop recommending to our friends and family since our return to the UK. The Portuguese hospitality, food, places of interest belong in the top division.

Good service and nice apartement

We stayed for a week and I was sorry we had to leave. This apartment is perfect if you are a couple visiting Lisbon or Sintra and if you prefer a quiet place of your own with a nice terrace. The apartment had everything we needed to be comfortable and feel at home. The ceiling was a bit low for my 2.03 cm boyfriend, and it is not very big so not fit for more than 3 people. The furbishing is simple but clean and complete. The bed was good, we cooked small meals we bought at the markets, watched a dvd and spent lovely hours on the big sunny terrace. Perfect to explore Sintra, Lisbon and beaches even without a car, with buses and the tram to the beach within 5 minutes walking distance. The host Karin is friendly and professional and committed to making your stay comfortable. If asked she will give you all the tips and information for a great stay in Portugal. We actually became acquainted and loved to spend some time with her since she is a very educated, creative and interesting person. We would be happy to stay here for longer periods of time and hope to come back someday.

You were both very charming and amusing to spend time with.... interesting to hear about your lives and occupations. Perhaps next time you will stay upstairs in the apartment with high ceilings! The downstairs apartment is only for two people....a couple...or a single person, we can also accommodate one baby. Three adults or more children would be too crowded.
