Alan and Tove an Anglo/Danish couple live in La Jarne a village just south east of La Rochelle which is on France's Atlantic coast and the third most visited place in the Country. They offer a modern garden apartment adjoining their own accommodation, a large single storey property in a quarter acre garden. The property has farmland to front and rear and is a short walking distance from facilities in the village which include boulangerie, tabac, pharmacie, boucherie, greengrocer, supermarche, cafe and pizzeria.

Our location in rural surroundings yet within a village just outside the built-up area of La Rochelle gives the visitor the best of all world's. Add to this 10 mins drive to the 6th best beach in France and 15 mins to one of its foremost historic centres...

About alan

Tove and I (Alan) sold up in the UK and moved to France in 2005 and found our house within a week. I am an ex town planner and Tove a Special Needs Education Lecturer and we've been based in Belfast, Lytham St Annes and Truro. Being also an ex tour guide I am quite happy to show people around the area.

Why alan chose La Jarne

Basically the attraction of the historic centre of La Rochelle and the climate- warm summers, decent spring and autumn. 2300 hours sun per year more than 50% greater than England. Here we have the best of all worlds with farmland front and back, edge of village with facilities including bus service to La Rochelle centre, a chateau over the road, 10 mins drive from the beach, 10 mins from out of town shopping. Airport is 15 mins and nearest channel port is St Malo just under 4 hours.

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment has its own private sitting out area but guests are welcome to use our lightly wooded quarter acre garden, sit out, play table tennis, enjoy some of our home produce in season and use the 2 hybrid bikes provided. We have only the one apartment so you won' be bothered by other holiday makers. We are always in residence when the flat is let, on hand to give advice or in the unlikely event of something going wrong. We always say to guests knock on our door as often as you like or not at all. Some guests we see little of after the initial tour round the accommodation and garden, others have become personal friends dropping by for a glass of wine or doing a joint visit to the local market.

Guided walking, cycling or car tours to nearby places of interest are available on a day basis for a small fee. This may be of particular interest to those holidaying without a car.

Coast/Beach:

Chatelaillon Plage which is 10mins drive has a good sandy beach and the proprietors swim there throughout the summer. Conditions are best two hours either side of high tide. In the 2014 Travelers Choice by Tripadvisor this beach was ranked 6th best in France.

Chatelaillon is of interest in itself having a large number of 19th and early 20th century villas in its numerous side streets. There are good surfing beaches on the Ile de Re, for example Le Bois Plage is about half an hour's drive.

Travel:

La Rochelle airport is 15 mins drive and has services to Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Birmingham, East Midlands, Manchester, Bristol and Dublin. The nearest Channel port is St Malo which is just under 4 hours drive. Although there is a regular bus service into La Rochelle centre, a car is in reality essential to enjoy all this area has to offer.

Distances:

La Rochelle centre 10 mins drive, Chatelaillon the same, the Ile de Re bridge is 15 mins drive to access an area well known for oysters, mussels, wine, sea salt, fortified towns and the famous Phare de Baleines lighthouse. A bit like Rock in Cornwall it is full of the glitterati in high summer.

For a change you can visit Green Venice, a maze of tree lined canals. Coulon the main centre is just over half an hour's drive.

Further Details:

La Rochelle has over 300 restaurants many of them surrounding the picturesque old harbour area an area popular for promenading in the evening and at weekends. The city also has many high class shops, fishing harbour, cruiseport, large aquarium, several museums and boat trips to Ile d'Aix (where Napoleon had a house) Ile de Re, Ile de Oleron and around Fort Boyard. La Rochelle has markets Wednesday and Saturday. Chatelaillon, Tuesday and Friday. Both have indoor markets open virtually everyday.

10 mins drive from the flat is a large out of town centre with a sizeable Carrefour and smaller Lidl and Leader Price supermarkets.

La Jarne village has an indoor tennis arena and a large scale horse riding establishment.

Notes on accommodation: We offer free access to the internet via a high speed wireless network. The latter requires our guests to have their own WIFI-enabled computer- the password for internet access is provided on arrival. Two newish bikes are available for exploring the flattish surrounding countryside and coastline which has a reasonable network of cycle tracks and quiet roads. Outside: Parking right outside the apartment. Accessed from the flat bedroom is a small but (usually) sunny sitting out area which includes table and chairs, parasol, sunloungers and separate table with electric grill. A set of boules is available. The area Is enclosed to give additional privacy and shelter. It includes trees, shrubs and flowers. Cleaning / Towels / Linen Linen and towels included and changed weekly. Property cleaned weekly, free of charge

A fantastic base from which to explore this beautiful part of France

Many thanks to Alan and Tove for a very friendly welcome to La Jarne and their local info of places to visit. We loved the apartment and the use of their beautiful garden including some of the vegetables from Alan's amazing vegetable plot . It had everything that we needed for our weeks holiday ( even the weather was perfect ) . There was an abundance of wildlife - birds , butterflies , moths and a pet lizard . We particularly liked the Black Kites and Storks in the adjacent field that Alan arranged for us ! Loads to do in the area , we enjoyed using the bikes provided at the apartment to explore La Jarne and beyond. Thanks very much for a fabulous holiday !

A very comfortable little apartment with very friendly, helpful hosts.

Having spent some time in busy French city hotels we wanted something outside La Rochelle where we could relax. The location is perfect for the Chatelaillon beach (an easy drive) and for visiting La Rochelle by bus. The well equipped apartment had everything we needed and we enjoyed the bottle of wine and the fresh figs! Tove pointed us in the direction of a very good lunch time restaurant to which we could walk. We can recommend the local bakery and the veg shop and butcher looked good too. It is worth a stroll around the pretty old streets of Jarne village.

Perfect holiday stay!!

We had a truly wonderful stay with Alan & Tove.

The garden flat was comfortable, well equipped & perfectly situated on the outskirts of La Rochelle.

All amenities were easily available...shops, buses, beaches, city!

We even got to sample some home grown veggies & great recommendations for day trips out!

Lovely accommodation, very well equipped, we didn't need for anything

We had a lovely stay, the owner Alan picked us up from the airport and took us to the local supermarket on the way to the apartment which was very welcoming as we didn't hire a car. We were made to feel very welcome and were spoilt with milk , wine , on arrival and lovely fresh home grown veg from Alan's veg garden. We made use of the push bikes supplied and had some great bike rides in the area. Because we didn't have a car Alan was very generous and took us to some lovely places which he didn't need to do but we were very grateful. There is a bus stop just around the corner which will take you to La Rochelle for about £1.70, it's a very relaxed and beautiful area , Ile de re is a must when you come to this area, you can get the bus from La Rochelle for about £5 , or £15 by car, it's an island made up of 10 villages each with individual tastes, loads of places to hire bikes and explore , stop and have a swim, and lots of lovely restaurants to explore. We truly fell in love with t he island and will definitely be returning to in the future.

Well Situated Location

We are regular visitors to the area and this was our first time with Alan & Tove. They made us very welcome and were on hand if we needed any help or guidance. The accommodation adjoins their property, is suitable for 2, is private and has everything you need for a short stay, including British and french TV. The location is very handy for us - close to our seaside favourites Chatelaiilon-Plage and Angoulins, as well as the wonderful La Rochelle. Rochefort is also worth a visit - in fact there is no shortage of things to do. The climate is good there - we had sunshine each day throughout our week in September. For the more adventurous, Alan & Tove provide a couple of bicycles and there are some lovely areas to explore that way. We would certainly recommend La Desirade
