House in Guitres, near Libourne / St Emilion, Gironde - Walking Distance of Shops and Restaurants, Superb for Exploring the Bordeaux Wine Area

A modern village house in a typical French square, located opposite the ancient west door of the abbey church, though don't be concerned, the bells will not disturb you. It is situated within walking distance of 3 restaurants and village shops. There are lovely views of the river Isle from the first floor balcony which opens onto both the living room and the kitchen. There are two first floor bedrooms. The outside terrace area is secluded but sunny, ideal for those leisurely outdoor meals. It is the perfect place for exploring the many Bordeaux wine regions, enjoying good food and for visiting historic places. There are miles of unspoilt lanes, cycle routes, walks and bridleways to discover with fun days out to St Emilion, Blaye, Bordeaux and Royan. It is an easy drive from the ferry ports and inexpensive flights go into local airports. Please do not hesitate to contact us for enquires or anything that we can help you with.

A lovely stay in Guitres

There is so much to praise about this lovely house and the town of Guitres. It was so comfortable and homely and in a wonderful location on the square across from the ancient abbey of Guitres (illuminated at night) and with great views. It was beautifully clean and orderly and very well prepared for us and was very well equipped with everything of such very good quality including excellent Wifi and all the TV Freeview channels - enabling us to follow Wimbledon whilst watching life in the square.

Guitres is a traditional ancient town/village set on the river Isle and in lovely countryside and it was a real delight watching local life from the house and balcony and being part of it for a couple of weeks. The locals were very nice and welcoming and seemed to enjoy our attempts to talk with them in French. Because of the intense heatwave when we were there, we just had to relax and not do much – which means that we still have a lot to experience in the area when we return. Shutters and the air con unit all helped us to keep cool and the garden and balcony were great too, offering both sunny and shady spots to suit all needs.

The traditional local shops in town are minutes away on foot for essentials and a chance to speak with the locals and there was a choice of excellent supermarkets a short drive away in nearby Coutras. Although in a non-touristy area, Guitres is a great base to visit places like St Emilion and Bordeaux etc and other local vineyards and there were plenty of walks around the village itself.

All communication with the owners Ian and Carolyn was excellent from start to finish and they were unfailingly helpful and accommodating - a pleasure to deal with!

We loved our stay here and certainly hope to return and would not hesitate to recommend to friends.

we had a relaxing holiday in a fantastic area of France. the local facilities met our needs and the supermarket was only a short drive away. visits to places such as Bordeaux and St Emilion were much enjoyed.

The house was clean and comfortable. In all I would recommend this holiday house to anyone who wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle and have a relaxing time.

Great location, great house

We enjoyed our holiday in Guitres. This house is a home not a holiday house. It is very well equipped to a high standard. There is a generous supply too of good garden furniture. The situation is lovely and there are beautiful views from the public room, kitchen and garden. Everything is very clean and ready for your arrival. The local shops for daily essentials are only a short walk away with very friendly staff. Relax and chill. Do as much or as little as you want to and like us benefit from a stay in this lovely area. The owners go the extra mile to ensure your holiday is just great and indeed they are very helpful.

Couldn't be better!

We stayed in Guitres for 4 weeks so we wanted to make sure the cottage we rented had everything we needed. When we arrived at Ian & Carolyn's house we found they had under sold it on the website. It's better than they say.

The cottage is absolutely wonderful and the balcony is blissful. Breakfast in the morning sun was a true joy.

The standard of equipment in the cottage was first class, providing everything we needed and more - and it wasn't just cheap stuff as so many are.

The cottage was truly comfortable and the local area was magnificent. If ever you need to relax and unwind, but with plenty to do when you want to, this is the place to go.

Fabulous retreat and base for exploring!

We stayed here for a week mid-August 2013 and are extremely impressed with every part of our stay, the location is ideal for exploring this amazing wine-region and also has great commuting links to other places (we took the TGV back up to Paris for a day out!).

The owners are extremely helpful and their communication and details were superb! The property itself is more than spacious, has great views and all possible amenities. It is easy to locate in a rural village which really does give you a true perspective on (non-touristy) French life. A car is definitely needed (which we had), given its rural location, however. It's a great base for exploring the local and renowned wine-growing regions of Pomerol, St Emillion and other Bordeaux vineries. We went to Sauternes, also, as my partner really likes dessert wines, en-route back from the beach and the immense sand dunes on the adjacent coastline. The countryside is magnificent and the locals - it helps when you speak their language - are very friendly and accommodating. There are many roman and 11th-14th century churches and monuments dotted around the area and also the Dordogne river gives opportunities for water activities (we went canoeing for a few hours just outside Coutras). All in all, a very relaxing, yet fun-filled week in a beautiful house. We couldn't recommend this place - or the owners - higher. Thank you I + C for letting us stay at your place in Guitres. It was a pleasure and we will gladly recommend your property to others looking for a similar holiday / getaway to our's.

Coast/Beach:

The Atlantic Coast can either be accessed at Royan in the north which is 65 miles away or further south at the spectacular Arcachon basin.

Travel:

Bordeaux and Bergerac airports are each an hour's drive away. TGV from Paris arrives in Libourne, which is 15 mins drive away. Car hire facilities are available at each of these and are essential.

Distances:

Guitres a few paces away with restaurants, village shops, boat trips and steam train. Coutras: 5 miles has restaurants/ bars, supermarkets, swimming pool (high season only) and sports facilities. Libourne: (13 miles) is a historic bastide town with cosmopolitan shops, pedestrianised centre, fantastic open air and covered markets. St Emilion: (16 miles) has vineyards, ancient monuments, steep winding cobbled streets and restaurants. Bordeaux: (26 miles) is a major international city of culture.

Further Details:

Within walking distance there are excellent restaurants, artisan bakers, superb butchers/delicatessen, several mini-markets, post office and banks with cash point machines. Guitres boasts three main attractions: The impressive 11th century abbey church, the River Isle and a steam railway. There is an indoor swimming pool at Saint Seurin Sur l'Isle as well as an outdoor pool at Coutras (high season only). Fishing is available on the Isle River which the house overlooks (permits available locally).

Please be aware that the property is not suitable for small children due to the external stone staircase to the first floor accommodation. We politely request guests not to smoke inside the house.
