About Catherine Broughton

The beach! We love the beach, barely 4 kms. We chose this area for its excellent climate, offering warm, lazy spring & autumn days & long hot summers. There is something for every age group in the general area, the beaches being a particular attraction. We bought this huge old place in 1995 & restored it ourselves.Old properties, dating to the 17th century. Staff available if there is anything you need.

Catherine Broughton purchased this cottage in 1995

Why Catherine Broughton chose St-Just-Luzac

We have always been interested in history, and this property is loaded with it. Nazis occupied the Chateau during WWII. The original property was much bigger and was burnt to the ground during the French Revolution. We have kept as much as we possibly can of the old features and have worked hard at retaining the traditional rural character of the place. You will not find stream-lined bathrooms and kitchens here, though there is of course everything you need for a wonderful holiday - sunshine included, all being well !

What makes this cottage unique

proximity of beaches

marvellous solar-heated pool

very child-friendly and secure (that is the one thing families comment on every year)

personal service

Guestbook comments from the manager

I am so surprised to see a negative review on here, because we thought this was such a pretty place and the owners and staff alike were lovely. It is true that some of the white goods are starting to look a wee bit tired, but hey if you're only there for a week or two what does it matter? I expect they will all get replaced anyway. I for one liked this very much and will return, no worries.

Booking Notes:
Please email or telephone us to confirm availability. We need to know the dates and number of people and children. We require a small deposit (part of the rent) immediately, with the balance in two/three payments. Upon receipt of deposit we will send you further information on the area and confirm details. Linen, cot etc. can be hired, let us know. Linen, in cottages at 16e pp and in Chateau at 18e pp includes all bedding, towels, bath mats, tea towels & beds will be made. Free WiFi .

Changeover day is Saturday during high season but we can sometimes be more flexible out of season.

Notes on prices:
All cottage prices are based on 2 people per bedroom; we charge a small supplement for one extra person per cottage. In the Chateau we take 12 people with a supplement for up to 2 extra people - the property will take more but we find it creates too much wear and tear. Utilities are included in peak season. Notes on accommodation: All the cottages are within high stone walled garden of one and a half acres. This provides privacy and security. Three of the cottages have wood burning stoves in case it is chilly in the spring or autumn . All windows are double glazed and the properties insulated. We sometimes accept a pet (by prior arrangement only) in low or mid season at a supplement of 150 euros pw. The pool is solar heated and usually warm enough by Easter through to October. Please note that because there are three 2-bedroom cottages, and two 3-bedroom cottages, and only one calendar, it is not possible for me to update availability unless everybody has booked exactly the same weeks. The 4 bedroom cottage & Chateau charts correct because there is just one chart for each.Note that prices in cottages are for 2 people per bedroom and we charge supplement of 150 euros pw for 1 extra (regardless of age). Big safe grounds & kiddy play areas. Outside: The integral secure car park is well away from the children's play area with play-castle, sand pit, swings slides and loads of space to play and run around. The 16 x 8m swimming pool is solar heated, decked and fenced in a wonderful sun trap. There are plenty of sun beds and sun shades. Non-serious table tennis and a small building with table football, and books.

Beautifully quaint and quirky. Typically French and rural as we were expecting. Accurate description and instructions. Slight issue while we were there but when we mentioned this it was rectified immediately. Thank you one again. We do hope to revisit soon

Great for kids, but bit shabby

  • 3 of 5

I have quite mixed feelings about my stay at the Domaine de Rochebonne.

-The kids loved it - there's lot of lovely creative ideas for the children, a wooden fort, a little playground, a games hut, lots of space and a good sized pool

-The pool was nice, albeit not quite warm enough for me

-The location is great for getting to the beaches of Ile D'Oleron which were great.

-It feels like the owners started off with really great intentions and some wonderful ideas and have gradually let it slide into shabbiness. There appears to be no reinvestment in keeping the place up to scratch or replacing any equipment. I found this very sad as it could be a wonderful place with a bit more care and reinvestment. For example, the fort had a plank of rotten wood in it which disintegrated while we were there, with a young girl hurting herself on it. The rooms upstairs could really do with redecorating.

- The administration is poor, with no booking forms until a week before arriving (and then only because I emailed with a question), and then found quite a few extras which I hadn't been notified of on booking (10 months before!). This didn't feel nice, just before leaving on holiday. Do check ahead of time.

- On leaving, you are suddenly presented with an electricity bill which also isn't explicitly stated. You are told that the meter will be read on arrival and departure but not that you will be charged or what the rate is (I had presumed that meters were read to prevent excessive usage). We left with a bad feeling about the place, which again, was sad.

- We went one week into September where it just goes into low season so we paid a reduced rate. I feel it was approximately value for money but I would not have thought so if we'd paid high-season rates for what we got - I've been to other places at the same rate which have been better looked after.

I loved the area and the kids loved the complex, if only the owners could look after it a bit more, it'd be fab.

Owner's Response: The main thing about our complex is that it is ideal for children, and that is what we concentrate on. There are very few places close to the beach, with pool and totally secure. Clearly, with such a huge place to look after, maintenance is constant and we go round and round replacing things, re-painting things etc. We are fully aware of what needs doing and work at it all the time. New mattrresses are on the agenda for next spring - 52 of them !! We cannot do it all in one hit. As for the extras - all you had to do was read the information; you were charged 3 Euros for electricity (most is included in the rent) and I find it extraordinary that you complain about it. The child that fell at the fort - this family have re-booked for next year and, if they were not bothered, I really do not see why you would be. However, all feed-back is worth reading and I have taken on board your comments, thank you.

A Really Good Holiday

  • 4 of 5

we had a great holiday at Rochebonne. It had everything for the children, the pool, the play area, the fort,. They enjoyed playing with the other children who were staying there.

The accommodation was nice, bright and clean, well equipped.

There are great beaches nearby, a really good zoo not too far away at La Palmyre and really good shopping in Saintes.

All about the money - would never return

  • 1 of 5

use was dark and definitely not clean. Had to step from the shower straight into shoes. The downstairs floor was sticky underfoot and dusty in bedrooms. Basin in bathroom simply not cleaned. Bedding needed replacing. Huge cobwebs between beds and walls. Knobs on cooked dangerously overheated. Owner was a no show when we were departing, had to leave without deposit being returned to us as no mobile provided by owner to make contact and land line had a message on it to say they didn't take messages! Owner lodged deposit to my bank account and deducted their own bank charge for the transaction from our deposit. Several emails were sent to request balance which was rightfully ours but we got excuse after excuse. We gave up asking in the end. Location is fab for exploring surrounding area but we would never return to this cottage. We spent as little time as possible in the cottage because it was so awful and owners attitude re deposit did not help.

Owner's Response: I have no idea who you are, but I suspect you are local competition. Considering the excellent reviews we have elsewhere I doubt anybody will take any notice. I know you can't possibly have stayed in my property otherwise you simply wouldn't say these things - we have a huge % of re-bookings. Do try to find something else to do - please.

The area boasts 50 miles of beaches, three islands, three golf courses, horse riding and forests leading down to the sea. There are numerous old ports and towns with many restaurants.

Romans left an amphitheatre and other buildings. Napoleon had fortifications built on every strategic point. The beach at Marennes has a giant man made sea lagoon ideal for kids. Beaches on the island of Oleron and the Cote Sauvage are well known for surfing. Naturist beaches on Oleron and in the Medoc nearby.

Ryanair Easyjet and FlyBe to La Rochelle (half an hour by car) and sometimes flights are as cheap as £1 plus taxes!! You will be sent a map and full directions well in advance of your holiday.

Ferries - we always advise people not to worry when ferries appear all booked; there is always a place from one crossing or another. The nearest is St Malo - 5/6 hours by car.

Beaches six to ten miles, St Just village 1/4 mile, Marennes for main shopping 4 miles, Ronce les Bains tourist seaside town 9 miles, Saintes (lovely Roman town) 20 miles, Royan for nightlife, seaside fun and restaurants 20 miles. Ile d Oleron (free bridge) for huge beaches and wonderful cycle tracks around the island, sea food restaurants 6 miles, Rochefort old military town with loads of history 12 miles, Cote Sauvage (Wild coast) surfing and beaches (some naturist), 8 miles.

Further Details:

In the village is a butcher, 2 bakers, small coop, chemist, doctor, wine and beer store, In Marennes about five miles away there are two big supermarkets, banks, post office and most shops & restaurants + nice port & marina.

Near St Just there is a small airport where one can learn to fly or parachute. On the way to Marennes there is an archery and shooting range and on Oleron there is a very good riding school. There is tennis in the village and football and other ball games as well.
