About the property

Whole House Rental or B&B in Pepieux, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon - On the Edge of the Village Square, Private Pool

We were delighted to welcome James Martin and his TV crew to stay with us here at Le Vieux Relais in August 2016!

As we did for James, we can create a package ‘just for you’ at our beautifully renovated 18c Coaching Inn, so whether you’re thinking of taking the whole family away for a special occasion or just to relax together and spend some quality time, look no further. The house and gardens are flexible enough to accommodate a wide variety of different family combinations so please let us know what works best for you and we’ll do our best to make it happen.

There are 5 large and airy bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms and seating areas to allow everyone their own space and privacy. The family suite has an extra interconnecting children’s room complete with toys and books to keep children entertained. One of the bedrooms is on the ground floor for guests with reduced mobility or those with babies as the room is garden facing and offers a bath and plenty of room for a cot and/or child’s bed.. The large dining room seats 12-14 around a large table, the elegant sitting room has a TV with English satellite channels and DVD player. The large kitchen is extremely well equipped with 2 ovens, a 5 burner hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine, there are 2 additional fridges, one in the house and another in the outside dining area. If you don't feel like cooking all the time, despite the attractions of all the local fresh ingredients, we can offer a very reasonably priced meal service where we shop and cook for you from just once to several times during your stay. Just let us know if you are interested and we can provide sample menus and prices.

Outside you will find the walled courtyard garden and the private, secure swimming pool with sun loungers, a real sun trap. The pool is completely fenced in with access only via the lockable gate making it ideal for families with younger children.

The garden leads to the covered living/dining area created from the old stable block, which is light and airy and provides plenty of space for children to play and adults to relax out of the sun whilst maintaining the feel of being ‘outside’. We have 2 large wooden dining tables and comfortable dining/lounging chairs with a fridge and large barbecue and also a table tennis table for more energetic guests!

The house has a wi-fi Internet connection and upstairs, tucked away at the back of the first floor, you will find a library with a wide variety of books a desk and wireless printer which can be used as an office if needed.

The village has a small supermarket, bakery, post office, tabac, pharmacy and a pizza restaurant which also does take-away. Most days of the week vans can be found in the square selling everything from vegetables to meat and charcuterie.

One of the biggest treats is the Minervois wine from the local cave or one of the many highly regarded and in several cases, internationally known, wine domains. Guests who enjoy a good stroll can find themselves at the tasting rooms of more than one without the need to drive, always a bonus!

Pepieux is the perfect place to stay in the region as we are central to everything with the Black Mountains, the Haut Languedoc National Park and facilities for walking, fishing, wine tasting, tennis, lake swimming (life-guarded in high season) and boating/canoeing practically on the doorstep. The medieval Cité at Carcassonne and the fortified village of Minerve are within half an hour. Narbonne, Beziers and the Mediterranean coast with its fabulous beaches are all within 45 mins drive, as are the lagoons of Bages and Leucate, offering wind and kite surfing. Montpellier, Toulouse and the Spanish border are all no more than ninety minutes away. We are also in Cathar country with numerous sites of special historical interest to history buffs, Lastours being the nearest and Montsegur the furthest away.

About Valerie or Mike

We, Mike & Val, came to the Languedoc in 2004 looking for a holiday home and ended up making our life changing decision to move permanently before we went home! The Languedoc inspired us to abandon our busy corporate lives and look for an unusual property to make both our home and suitable accommodation for guests. We found Le Vieux Relais in early 2005 and the rest, as they say, is history!

Valerie or Mike purchased this chateau / country house in 2005

Why Valerie or Mike chose Carcassonne surroundings

We are passionate about this part of France, which has been a well kept secret for Francophone visitors for many years. The Languedoc offers something for everyone, from beautiful and usually uncrowded sandy beaches to history, culture and gastronomy. The locals are very proud of their region and we in turn are proud to provide our guests with an insight into what life is really like in rural France. It's not unheard of for our local vigneron (wine maker) to call by and tell us he will be starting the first part of his wine making process that morning and would our guests like to come and watch. This is of course followed by a tasting of last years production!

What makes this chateau / country house unique

We are very well placed right in the middle of the region, as many guests have said 'in the middle of everywhere'. It was always our intention to provide a central base for our guests to enable them to stay here for several days, or more, and see most of what the area has to offer on day trips rather than moving on every day (Vals' pet hate after years of corporate travel!).

We find that our table d'hotes dinners are very popular, guests love to come back after a day out, have a refreshing dip and relax on a sun longer by the pool then meet for drinks and dinner. We have converted out stable block into a very light, bright and airy outdoor dining terrace and many a good night has been enjoyed by all. We showcase local food and wine as far as possible in our dinner menus.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Our trip was great. We stayed in a very nice B&B in Brittany. The rest of the time was in hotels, some good, some not so good. Our stay at Le Vieux Relais was definitely the highlight for Joan and I. It even beat the 5 star hotel where we stayed in Vichy. It was really wonderful staying with you - I felt very comfortable and at home. The food was also exceptional. Thank you so much. I will return and also recommend you to all my friends."

One of the nicest testimonials we have received is from a mum who works full time and has three lively teenage sons who said that it was lovely ‘not to have to do the thinking’ about what to eat!

Our Wedding!!

  • 5 of 5

We hosted our wedding at Le Vieux Relais over 3 days. Val and Mike were wonderful at catering for our needs and for our extended family.

They organised a paella lunch, the wedding day it self and a big breakfast for the day after the wedding.

Val was able to organise essentials such as a hairdresser and wedding cake.

Thank you for making it a wonderful week.

Fabulous accomodation in equally fabulous area!

  • 5 of 5

I have just seen Le Vieux Relais on James Martin's French Adventure! We have had several group holidays at Val and Mike's over the last few years with different combinations of family and friends, including last year, but obviously before they had a celeb chef stay with them! The configuration of the accommodation makes it flexible enough for all ages and we have accommodated both young children and teenagers in the family suite, and granny in the ground floor bedroom. The house was spotless and really comfortable, and the pool a welcome place to relax and cool off after a day's sight seeing. Val and Mike are excellent hosts and provide a wealth of useful information about the area. The local food is fabulous, Mike's BBQ went down a storm, not to mention Val's home baked cakes and desserts, (as evidenced by James Martin!) I would not hesitate to recommend this property, and as a big James Martin fan, I was thrilled to see it featured in his TV programme.

Whole house rental

  • 5 of 5

As a large family group of 10 adults and 2 little ones, we selected the house in Pepieux for its bedroom and bathroom configuration and location near Carcassonne. We knew we would be self catering most of the time and heading out for days of sight-seeing. We had a brilliant time. The house was immaculate, really well appointed (particularly the kitchen) with large rooms giving us all privacy as well as the space for socialising. Mike and Val were really helpful giving us tips for trips and dining and, with a small supermarket and bakery in the village, it couldn't have been more convenient. The pool was lovely for the children and, with an outside dining area with BBQ, we relaxed and whiled away some lovely evenings under starry skies. Having your own transport is a must in this area to be able to get out to all those beautiful towns and villages. Highly recommended. Make sure you drop in to the "after work" wine tasting at Chateau Massamier La Mignarde just down the road too, it was simple and charming.

We are ideally placed to enjoy all the region has to offer with everything from major sites of historical interest at Carcassonne and Narbonne, from pre-history, through the Roman period, mediaeval and Cathar periods to the Revolution and beyond to the present day.

Wine production is a mainstay of the economy and there are many wine estates and local producers of international reknown and also interesting up and coming producers who still remain a well guarded local secret. We can arrange wonderful escorted trips from half a day up to and including long week-ends with a well known local guide who has been working with us for some 5 years now.

Coast/Beach:

The nearest Mediterranean beaches are Narbonne plage and Valras plage, both classic french beach resorts set along 10km of beautiful flat sand (cleaned every day) with activity areas for children, restaurants, shops, and a myriad of other activities. Both are 40 mins drive from the house and make a wonderful day out. The nearest lake beach is 5 mins from the house at Lac de Jouarres. We have plenty of buckets and spades, beach chairs and umbrellas available for guests to borrow.

Travel:

How to get here: By air: Ryanair to Carcassone & Beziers (30/45 minutes drive). Ryanair, Flybe and BMI Baby flights to Perpignan (1 and a quarter hours drive). Easyjet flights to Toulouse and Montpellier (1 and a half hours drive). BA flights to Toulouse. By road: Allow 2 days to drive from the channel ports, the village of Pépieux is on the D52, off the D11 near Olonzac north-east of Carcassonne. By train: TGV rail link to Béziers, Narbonne and Carcassonne. Car hire is recommended.

Distances:

The house is on the edge of the village square with small shops, post office and church. Pepieux is 5 mins from Lac de Jouarres and Olonzac, 15 mins from Minerve and the start of the Haut Languedoc National Park, 30/45 mins from Carcassonne, Narbonne, Beziers and the Mediterannean beaches, 1 hour 30 mins from Montpellier, Toulouse, Perpignan and the Spanish border and 3 hours from Barcelona.

Further Details:

The nearest bank is in Olonzac, 5 mins drive away and there is a wide selection of restaurants available within 5-10 mins drive.
