Both the cottages are detached, set against terraces offering many places to relax. Beautiful place to stay, tranquil and with a great

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here with our 2 children (aged 6 and 7) for a week but by the time we left we wished we had booked for longer. The cottages have everything they need, are clean, the pool is only a few steps away with plenty of deckchairs and a great view of the surroundings. There's also plenty of spots to sit in the shade under pergolas covered by vines. Tina and Harry are great hosts without being intrusive. There's the river down below if you want a change from the pool and there's plenty of cities/sights to visit within an hour's drive. We don't usually go to the same place twice but if we ever visit Portugal again we wouldn't hesitate to come back here. Thanks again for a great stay!!

Pics don't do this place justice!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 10 days with our teenage children and had planned to chill one day and sight see the next. That didn't quite work to plan as once we had spent a day by the pool lounging on the quality sun loungers we were hooked! We did go to Porto on the local bus which only took an hour and is well worth a visit, in fact we will come back for a weekend to explore it more. The cottages are in beautiful location and only around 3 miles to Amarante which has plenty of restaurants. By the way, this is by far the cheapest holiday we have ever had. We ate what and where we wanted and the most expensive meal including wine, desserts etc came to around £40!!! The cottages are very well equipped with all you'll need and very clean. Harry and Tina are lovely people and are there for you if you need them but not at all intrusive. North Portugal is completely different to the Algarve and if it's fish and chips you're after then this area wouldn't be for you. Definitely recommend it. Thank you Harry and Tina .

Fantastic Place

  • 5 of 5

I booked this place to celebrate my 60th birthday with my family and friends and I wasn't disappointed. My husband and I stayed in Olive Tree with friends.

The place is only a short drive from Amarante where there are some lovely bars and shops.

Porto is only 45mins by bus. We decided to go by bus as we weren't sure about parking. Porto is fantastic lots to do.

We also drove to Regua, where you can have a boat trip on the Douro.

As there were 10 of us we booked the whole place. There was ample parking for all three cars.

Our cottage was lovely, thick stone walls tiled floors. One double room and one twin.

Everything that we needed was catered for. We needed a blender and Tina the owner loaned us hers. Nothing was too much trouble.

There was extra bedding in the drawers if it got cold.

It is an ideal place if you have a large group as there a communal room by the Pool for meeting. There is a television which you can receive British channels.

There are fantastic views from this area. Sun loungers, table and chairs. Harry and Tina thought of everything.

It is a quiet place ideal for walking reading just chilling.

It is also suitable for individual families as each cottage is separate from each other. All having there own outdoor areas to sit.

Every morning at 10.00am the bread van would arrive. You could hear his horn across the river then five minutes later he arrived, but you have to be quick.

We will certainly be back.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Porto at 50 Kilometres

Special interest holidays:

Apart from the jeep safari at Casa da Ponte we can explain in detail methods of wine making from planting, pruning and maintaining vines though to grape production, harvesting and processing.

The coast is about 1 hours drive where there are numerous beaches up and down the coast. The rivers also provide swimming on the doorstep.

The airport in Oporto is about 1 hours drive. Generally a taxi costs 5€ from Amarante and there is a regular bus to town from Casa da Ponte. With the new metro linking the airport to Oporto it is easier to travel on public transport although for getting around a car is an advantage.

Fridao the nearest village is 3km and also has an internet cafe. Amarante is 5km as is the motorway linking to many places of interest in the North of Portugal. There is a direct bus route to Santa Catarina in Oporto the main shopping street, with the advantage of no parking costs or problems.

Further Details:

There are a range of shopping facilities in Amarante with 2 main supermarkets and several discount store. On Wednesday and Saturday the is an open air market.

  • Notes on accommodation: A cot and high chair are available. Although the solid stone cottages offer a cool refuge during very hot days we can provide fans. Outside: The shared pool and pool house which sits above Casa da Ponte benefits from early sun. It is an unusual shape being 9m long, 6m wide at the shallow end and 4m wide at the deep end. The shape accommodates more people and children with its larger shallow end. There are many places to relax in the extensive grounds with walks along the rivers and where the Olo meets the Tamega. The pool house has an open kitchen dining area with attached shower bathroom facility. The terrace to the front is built in stone and was originally for drying maize. At first floor level is a further double bedroom available for large bookings.
