Updated: 27-Oct-2016
Villa in Archez, Nr. Competa, Andalucia - Peaceful Location But Only 5 Mins Walk To Restaurants, Bars And Shops. Free Broadband & UK TV

Less than 5 mins walk, on proper pavements with streetlighting, to restaurants (including Moorish and Traditional Spanish), bars, supermarkets and pharmacy, but completely private sitting in 2000 square metres of land. Walking distance to 2 other villages with restaurants, shops, bars and banks. The beautiful beaches of Nerja, Torre del Mar and Algarrobo are within 20-25 mins drive. The house is accessed by tarmac road, so no need to rent a 4x4 vehicle. The house is well equipped and furnished and is maintained by a local British couple. The property is light and airy in the summer but cosy in the winter with a wood burning stove and electric heaters. Archez is a 1 hour drive from Malaga airport and 1.5 hours to Granada and 2.5 hours to Seville. The villages of Canillas de Albaida and Corumbella are within walking distance. We were looking forward to a relaxing break and that is exactly what we have found here. The gardens are stunning, the villa very comfortable and cosy. We have really enjoyed pottering about and visiting nearby villages. Had a beautiful paella in a nearby restaurant and made lemonade using the recipe from the previous guests and it was lovely.

Many thanks Margaret and Brian

La Casa de Flores

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely, relaxing couple of weeks at La Casa de Flores. The villa had everything we needed for a comfortable stay with our two young teenage boys.

The views over Archez and across the mountains are stunning. Each morning we had breakfast on the terrace in the sunshine whilst we decided whether to stay by the pool for the day or get out and about - there are many other beautiful villages to visit as well as beach resorts and places of interest such as the dramatic caves at Nerja. If you have children, the waterpark Aquavelis is also a great day out (expensive entrance fee, but worth it). There are several good places to eat in the village and lots of others in the neighbouring area.

It is a short (but steep) walk down to the village, but the Cafe/Bar Amalia is just a couple of minutes walk down the hill and has the most friendly owners - we regularly walked down for a nightcap!

You will need a car to get around, but the main roads are in good condition - it takes about 20 minutes to get from the house to the coast along picturesque winding roads.

The area is very peaceful during the day (can be a little noisy early in the morning as the sound travels up from the village when the locals are starting their day), and we certainly felt refreshed after our stay in this lovely rural retreat.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review, I am glad that you had a lovely time and that our Spanish neighbours made you welcome. One of the things that we really like about the location of our house is that we can choose to do as much or as little we want with our days. You have made good use of the close proximity to the coast to visit the water parks during the hot weather and visitors in the autumn often choose to take a day trip to Granada or Seville which are both stunning cities but far too hot in the peak summer months. We also like to have a nightcap in Cafe/Bar Amalia, the owners Imma and Juan are lovely, all of our visitors say nice things about them. After one of Juan's drinks you are certainly guaranteed a great nights sleep!! they also serve lovely churros y chocolate for breakfast at the weekends. It goes without saying that you are more than welcome to return to our house at any time in the future.

Idyllic location

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful property with everything you would need for a perfect holiday. The outside space was beautiful with amazing views over the villages and countryside. Normally the climate is a bit less intense, heat-wise, in September but we stayed during a heatwave with temperatures in the 40s! Air-conditioning would have been a nice addition but the lack of it did not spoil our time at Casa de Flores (we slept outside on the terrace!). Would recommend this to people who like the outdoors as the walking around Archez is fabulous, just time it for when the weather is not too hot!

Owner's Response: Dear Mary I am glad that you both enjoyed your time in our house. I am stunned that the temperature was as high as 40 degrees as it has usually dropped down to a comfortable 27 by then! I am pleased that you loved the views from our terrace, we think that they are stunning. Yes, the walking around Archez is amazing but not in 40 degree heat, I would be submerged in the pool at those temperatures! November to the end of May are the most popular walking months. Hope to see you again in the future

A fabulous find!

  • 5 of 5

We were lucky enough to enjoy a week at Casa De Flores in mid August. The villa is easily accessible located on a good, albeit steep road overlooking the beautiful white village of Archez. The centre of the village can be reached in approx. 5mins by meandering down the hill with a couple of good bars, supermarket and restaurants within easy walking distance. If you want to get away from it all and experience the real Spain this is the place to go however the busier town of Competa is only 10 minutes by car.

The villa is set in extensive grounds with lots of outdoor living space, early risers can watch the morning sun come up over the mountains from the villa porch. Whilst the barbeque / dining area is perfect for relaxing on long, summer evenings. As you wander along the terrace and into the gardens sample the fruit from grape vines, lemon, lime, almond and fig trees whilst taking in the superb views. The pool is well maintained and great for a dip to cool down from the heat of the summer sun, 4 comfortable sun loungers complete the pool area .

Inside the villa is a real home from home, clean and well furnished with a rural feel. The kitchen is well equipped and the Wifi connection stood up to the demands of our teenagers! plus the satellite TV gives access to UK TV programmes. The newly fitted bathroom is excellent with a powerful shower over the bath and plenty of hot water. Wooden shutters and ceiling fans keep the house cool.

Margaret our host was so helpful and gave us lots of tips and information about the local area, she also put us in touch with Maria a local taxi driver - a great find! with fabulous service who took us to La Feria in Malaga and Competa at a reasonable price.

We wouldn't hesitate in recommending Casa De Flores to all our friends and family. We look forward to returning again in the future.

Owner's Response: Dear Karen Thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely review, it was a pleasure to have you and your family to stay at our house and you are welcome to return at any time in the future. I also love the view of the sun coming up from behind the hills in the morning and the terrace at the end of the house, where the grapevines are, is a good spot to watch the sun going down but my favourite place, by far, to enjoy the sunset is sitting on the terrace of Bar La Extramena sipping a nice glass of Rioja whilst waiting for Sonja to bring my dinner!! The terrace at Restaurant Amalia also has stunning views.Visitors are more than welcome to pick any seasonal fruits and nuts from our trees during their stay. I am looking forward to going over in October when I will get the last of the figs but the oranges should just be ripening for me to have very fresh orange juice for breakfast. Thank you for your lovely comments about our house and gardens , we have a great management team and I will pass your comments to them as they will have prepared the house and gardens for your arrival. Hope to see you gain in the future. Best Regards Margaret and Brian

Gorgeous villa with stunning views!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a very relaxing two week holiday staying at the beautiful Casa de Flores. The villa was just what we wanted and more. A well equipped villa in a private setting with amazing views we still were within walking distance of local amenities. We didn't hire a car as my husband drives for a living and wanted a break from driving. This wasn't a problem as Margaret arranged our transfers to and from the airport with the local taxi 'Maria' who we also used during the two weeks when we ventured to the neighbouring village of Competa. Archez offers 4 excellent bar/ restaurants and a well stocked village shop. Margaret was happy to answer any questions we had prior to departure as well as forwarding lots of useful information about the villa and local area.

We highly recommend Casa de Flores and hope to return. With regard to the steepness of hill on which the villa is sat with views to admire and an excellent bar/restaurant half way up .... we didn't find it a problem!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. It was a pleasure to have you visit our holiday home and you are more than welcome to return. An increasing number of our guests are choosing to not hire a car and we are always happy to arrange airport transfers with Maria. I am glad that you enjoyed the local restaurants, I very rarely cook when I am over as the local food is lovely and not at all expensive. We hope to see you again soon

Total chill out !

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 2 weeks in September. As we didn't hire a car, Margaret arranged for a taxi to pick us up from the airport. The villa is very clean and comfortable and has everything you need plus more.

The pool was great to cool down and there is a lovely patio to sit under if it gets too hot where you can enjoy the lovely view and look across to Archez.

You can make this holiday as active or inactive as you like. If you want active you really need a car but if like us you just want to chill, a car is not necessary.

There is a well stocked supermarket in the village which is a 5 minute walk away. It did stock fresh meat but they only seemed to get it in at the weekends.

The bars and restaurants are lovely and really cheap. Café Amalia, about 100m from the villa sells pre-cooked meals. We never tried them, but they did provide us with a barbeque pack so that we could use the BBQ at the villa.

We really didn't venture out of Archez for the two weeks except when we went to Competa one evening. It was well worth the visit and the 25 euros return in the taxi. There are plenty of walks and I walked up to the next village of Cannillas in about 20 minutes. There is a butcher and a fishmonger in that village, but a fish van made daily visits to Archez and while we never tried it, it was very popular with the locals.

The garden in the villa is great with lovely flowers and loads of fruit trees. We thought we had won a watch when we arrived with the 'lime' trees bursting with fruit for our G&Ts. It was only at the end of the fortnight when the 'limes' were getting bigger and bigger and turning lighter that we realized they were oranges!

Would thoroughly recommend Casa de Flores and this area for a holiday.

People here don't speak much English so remember you Spanish phrasebook.

The only slightly bad point is that the last 20m up to the villa is very steep - but it did provide a good workout !

Owner's Response: Glad that you had a great time at our house, you are welcome to return any time. I am glad that you made good use of the local restaurants as they are extremely good value, We have had the home made ready meals from Café Amalia, the chicken and chorizo casserole is delicious. I have not had the barbeque pack but I know that the burgers and sausages are home made by Dot and other people have told us that they are great. The local supermarket also has frozen pork chops, chicken breasts, king prawns etc in the freezer cabinet. I enjoyed your story about the limes which were unripe oranges. I hope to be picking them ripe, fresh from the tree next week for my breakfast juice. John , our gardener, keeps the garden beautiful for us and Jenny takes great pride in her cleaning standards so we are glad that you were pleased. And yes, the last 2 minutes walk up from the village has contoured our calf muscles beautifully. Thank for such a great review. Best Regards Margaret and brian

Holiday at La Casa De Flores

  • 5 of 5

The villa is very comfortable and has everything you need for your holiday. The property is very well kept and we found it to be very clean and comfortable inside and out. The views from the many seating areas are magnificent and even more beautiful than the pictures on the website. The villa and grounds had everything we needed, the pool was lovely and clean and our children really enjoyed playing in it for much of the day every day.

The local village was very pretty, the narrow streets are charming and look as though they haven't changed in centuries! We found the local restaurants to be very reasonably priced and the food was superb everywhere we ate. Margaret's information pack and suggestions were very helpful in aiding our enjoyment of our holiday.

There was enough to entertain our family of four within the village and local surroundings for the week and we probably wouldn't bother with a hire car if we came again in the future.

Overall I would recommend this as a fabulous villa in a unique, beautiful location.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review , it was a pleasure to have you and your family spend your holiday at La casa de Flores. I am glad that you had a great time and that you have enjoyed the local restaurants. They are very much cheaper that the restaurants on the coast and I really don't bother cooking at all now when I am over and I make good use of the 1 euro coffee in the bar avenida. Our property managers will very much appreciate the comments about the cleanliness of the inside and outside of the house and the pool water, I will pass your comments to them. If I go over for week, I don't bother renting a car so if you should decide to return, and you are more than welcome to do so, I will be happy to make arrangements with Maria for you. Best Regards margaret

From the Owner

After viewing 14 properties in 3 days, we fell in love with this one as soon as we came through the gates. The gardens and terraces are beautiful and the views are absolutely stunning. Because we are driving a lot at work we wanted to be within walking distance of at least 1 restaurant and 1 supermarket. We are lucky enough to be able to walk to 5 restaurants and 2 supermarkets in our own village and a similar number in the next village. I often travel to our villa alone and wanted to have somewhere that was private but not isolated. The real deciding factor though, was the warmth of the local people. Our village is a small Spanish community where the most valuable assets are family and friends.

From the Owner

The fact that the village is very self contained means that we don't always need to rent a car as we can buy everything that we need locally. If we want to take a trip to Granada, Seville etc we will rent a car, but if not, Maria, the local taxi driver, will collect us at the airport and take us back there at the end of our holiday. The majority of our returning guests do not rent a car now.
