Village House in Niguelas, Lecrin Valley, Andalucia, Spain - It has a private pool and large roof terrace. The stunning views make it a really special place.
Casa Alta has all you need for a relaxing and interesting holiday. From comfortable beds to a large fridge freezer, from sunny terraces to an indoors games room, from a well-equipped kitchen to wifi, there is something for everyone. Every aspect of the house has great views: over the village towards the church, across the Lecrin valley with its patchwork of olive and almond trees. the dramatic beauty of a mountain vista in the distance and the Sierra Nevada mountain range rising from the rear of the property. The roof terrace is a great place to see the changing colours of the mountains during the day and to watch the sun go down before eating dinner under a starry sky.
There are pastimes to meet different tastes.: relax by the pool, pop into the village at lunchtime or early evening and join the locals for a drink and free tapas, take a stroll along the walkway along the Torrente valley or, if you feel more energetic follow the GR7 footpath which traces an old trade route from Algeciras to Athens that runs through the village. Or go further afield, our guide in the house will give you more information or our friends who will meet you when you arrive will give you some advice.
Niguelas is a thriving traditional village with a strong community spirit. It two bakeries, several shops, a market, a variety of bars and restaurants. It is home to a music school that contributes to village events and celebrations. There is also a larger supermarket selling good range of fresh meat, fish, fruit and vegetables just 5 minutes drive away.

We would like to say how much we enjoyed our stay in Niguelas and thought that the whole of the Lecrin valley was beautiful. The accommodation could not be faulted and was well stocked for all self catering needs.Thanking you once again for providing us with the accommodation for a wonderful holiday (RC Hinkley;Aug 2010)
I would like to commend you on your property " La Casa Alta" which exceeded our expectations in all regards. We had a wonderful break with our family and would recommend your property to anyone (MW South Africa Sept 2010).
Great elevated location in the village offering wonderful views and stunning sunsets. Lots to do in Niguelas too, with friendly people, lively bars and useful amenities. All this makes Casa Alta a perfect rural/village base from which to explore Granada province. Recommended. GS Lancaster May 2013

We were met by Christine, a lovely lady who manages the property. She was extremely lovely and helpful, answering all our questions. The villa was in a great location and we enjoyed walking out to the local shops and tapas bars and up the mountain to enjoy the waterfalls. Everything else was only a short drive away. Would highly recommend the area, it offers everything. The villa offerred a lot of different outdoor areas which was lovely for a big group. As we were two families, we struggled for hot water, often having very short, staggered, barely warm showers. There is only one double room so the other couple shared a twin room but the beds do not go together well to make a double, leaving one couple slightly uncomfortable. Otherwise, a fabulous holiday! Thank you Michael!
Fabulous village location. Great house and really well equipped with everything you could need. The pool is a welcome relief to help cool down. Plenty of options for sitting outside, whether you like the shade or the sun.
There are several bars and restaurants in the village, as well as local shops, all within walking distance.
You can be as active or inactive as you like here; it's really comfortable and spacious if you want to relax, or you can take some wonderful walks in the foothills and river beds around the village. 30 mins or so to wonderful Granada in one direction or a day at the beach in the other. We've been to this region in the winter too and you can get to the ski slopes in about 40 minutes.
We really enjoyed ourselves, we will be back!
Fantastic village house
We were a party of 6 adults and a 3 year old who all enjoyed the house. It was clean and comfortable, the kitchen was very well equiped and we loved gathering round the wood burning stove in the cooler evenings (it was the end of March after all!). By day it was a temptation just to laze around in the sun on the roof terrace, and light the occasional barbecue. The walk from the house up to the local waterfall is not to be missed, nor is a trip to the caves at Nerja, or the Alhambra gardens. The internet connection worked well, even with all adults connected, which was a great plus for us. Lastly we have to mention Christine who looked after us during our stay - very welcoming and happy to help - a wonderful stay!
The only problem is having to leave
The property itself is comfortable, clean and well equipped. The pool is lovely and private. Being at the higher edge of the village makes for some amazing views across the rest of the town and the Lecrin valley beyond from the terrace.
The village itself was lively and welcoming (we were there during fiesta week) and it felt like a real privilege to be part of the community for our stay. The village has a selection of bars, bakeries, small grocery stores and restaurants as well as a larger supermarket just outside meaning you don't have to go far and can just enjoy village life if you want to. A morning coffee at the churreria became a very pleasant daily ritual.
Within 30 minutes drive you have Granada and the Alhambra to the north, Salobreña and the coast to the south, and Lanjaron and the Sierra Nevada to the east. Such a variety of different landscapes, activities and experiences within easy reach all of which we'd love to see again.
This was our first visit to Spain and we'll definitely be going back. The only problem with having visited Casa Alta and NIgüelas on our first visit is that it's going to be hard to see other parts of the country when we know this perfect little gem of a place is there.
We arrived here in late January and it was everything the description states.
The house has good sized rooms and a very well kitted out kitchen.
It was spotlessly clean and very well maintained.
I would recommend this property to anyone looking for a good base to explore the surrounding area which is rich in real life Spain.
A short holiday break but we wished we'd booked for longer ,the property has lovely views ,well located above the main part of the village, well equipped kitchen with a very comfortable lounge clean & well maintained throughout ,a lovely roof terrace for private sunbathing and al fresco meals, also a cool balcony for hotter days, a small pool offering complete privacy, fantastic shower ,comfortable beds and a small indoor games room. The village has several bars within easy reach all very welcoming with tapas accompanying every drink .We'd recommend this house for a family with older children ,easy access to numerous activities in the Sierra Nevada inc walking ,cycling ,canyoning etc. Bus service to Granada and a very well stocked supermarket a short drive away. Also worth a visit is the local Bodegas for excellent wine at very reasonable prices.
There are numerous walks from the village all of which are well signposted. The walk up to the house from the village would prove a little difficult for people with reduced mobility.
Overall we had a fantastic time in the area there was far more to do than we had time for. This is a property we would use again and have no hesitation in recommending it for a holiday, easy access from Malaga the coast is only an hour away the drive is very scenic.
The description of the house by the owner is accurate if anything the house exceeds the description.
From the Owner
“We came on holiday to the area in 2001 and loved the dramatic scenery and the quaint white Moorish villages dotted around the Lecrin valley and decided to buy somewhere the following year. We were particularly attracted to Niguelas because it is quiet but is still a working village with a primary school and a well-regarded music school. It has just the right amount of things to do so you can do your local shopping visit one of the half a dozen bars or couple of restaurants or go for a scenic mountain walk without having to use the car. Our boys were about 13 and 11 when we bought the house and we have always come out once a year for a family holiday. It is very safe for young children to wander about. At the same time it is within half an hour of Granada, the coast and the ski resort.”
Activity and Interests
Coast is 30 minutes away and it is about 35 minutes drive to the beach at Salobrena.
Granada airport has international flights and there is a direct British Airways flight from London City Airport to Granada. There are lots of flights direct to Malaga (about 1.15 hours drive from the house) and Seville (2.5 hours). Although there is a good local bus service to the coast and Granada, car hire is recommended.
The beautiful and vibrant city of Granada with its magnificent Alhambra Palace, is only 20 minutes away. The coast is about 30 minutes with good beaches at Salobrena. Malaga is about 1.15 hours away and Seville about 2.5 hours drive.
Niguelas has a population of about 1500. It is very old (the church dates from the 16th century) with narrow winding streets. It has two bakeries, a small daily covered market with a fish stall, a greengrocer and a butcher, a fishmonger, a pharmacy, a number of small supermarkets, a number of bars, all of which serve free tapas. Some of the bars are set round two pedestrianised squares while one bar is in a beautiful garden. There are two restaurants. Everything is within about 10 minutes walk of the house. The village also has a small museum, a music school and a cultural centre where the mayor often pays for free concerts. There is a part-time bank. Horse riding can be arranged in the village. There are some great walks through the local countryside and mountains and some of these start in the village such as the path from the village which leads to the famous GR7 route which runs from Algeciras to Athens. In the summer it is possible to climb Mulhacen, Spain's highest peak at over 3500 metres, starting from the ski resort.
Durcal, 2km away, is a medium sized town with all facilities including a weekly market. A big supermarket has just opened between the village and Durcal. English language DVD's and books are available in Durcal.

“We liked the location of the house because being at the top of the village, it has terrific views from the terraces over the villages to the mountains beyond. The house is spacious so our children were able to bring friends. They have fond memories of playing in the pool and the table tennis room is great to retreat to at Siesta time. But what we like is the house enables us to totally relax. There is nothing better than sitting on the terrace and watching the sunset over the mountains whilst having a drink.”
