About the property

It is known that this was the 1st building to be built in the village in 1594. It has had many uses in its time and was once used as a convent with its cellars being used for the production of olive oil and wine. The olive oil is still being made by the locals from the village olives groves, including our own olive oil & wine is made from the vines grown on the hillside. We purchased the building in an almost ruined state in early 2004 after many years of it being uninhabited. (some parts over 100 yrs) It has been divided into separate dwellings, each having its own individual features & all having been lovingly restored by local craftsmen to include all the modern day appliances while maintaining the traditional Tuscan charm. There is a fascinating mixture of high ceilings, original floors, chestnut beams, stone fireplaces and terracotta floors. With a heated swimming pool set in the extensive grounds, commanding an unbroken and breathtaking views of the hills, a perfect place to relax.

During the high season our bookings are usually 'back to back' and we are not able to be flexible with our Saturday changeover day. For those families who wish to arrive a day early or stay a day longer, there is a very good and very reasonably priced local hotel in Borgo Mozzano. (Hotel Milano) Their charges include breakfast and they have family rooms for up to 5 people. They also have a restaurant. If you wish to consider this option, please do not hesitate to contact us, or if you wish, contact them direct. They do have english speaking staff available.

For folk arriving late in the evening, we can arrange for some breakfast items so that you can enjoy your first morning without having to hurry out to shop!

About Gill Clay

We 'discovered' Celle, by mistake really! In fact 'it' found 'us'! We were not actually looking to buy 'anything' 'anywhere' We had been on holiday in Lucca with an Italian friend and we were told about a Puccini concert that they hold twice during the summer, in the small hillside hamlet of Celle - the home of generations of the Puccini family. We were intrigued and drove from Lucca to Celle for the performance. Our evening was magical and it totally changed our direction in life.

We moved from Croydon to the Isle of Wight and then sold our distribution business of 27 years in 2007 - people call it retirement! We now spend half the year in the Isle of Wight and the other half in Italy. We call it a balanced life!

Gill Clay purchased this house in 1999

What makes this house unique

We live in a small hamlet village and the people in the village are our 2nd family. There are only about 35 people who still live in Celle and they are always busy growing their fruit and veg and making their wine and olive oil. We love the natural life here. When you look out onto the surrounding hills, there is a sense of calm and peace and we know that we have arrived 'home'

Beautiful house, amazing views & such a lovely welc

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week of our summer in the beautiful Tuscan “hamlet” of Celle. Such a lovely area off the main tourist track, but not too far from Lucca and slightly further to either the coast or Torre Del Lago. The apartment was marvellous, so much character and style and everything you could need….such a high standard with a lot of love put into it!

We filled our days with a mix of “action and adventure” or lazing by the lovely pool, chilling and soaking up the sun. On the active days we did some orienteering down waterfalls, paragliding off a local mountain (incredible thing to do!!) or taking in the culture of an opera performed at the fabulous amphitheatre at Torre Del Lago from the local composer, Puccini. The local Puccini museum is also worth a visit.

Thank you Gill & Ken for your help, advice and organising some of the incredible things we did during our stay in Tuscany, especially the pizza night - such fun. Such a super holiday….

Five star accommodation. Glorious location.

  • 5 of 5

Ken and Gill went above and beyond the call of duty as hosts. Always willing when we needed them. The house was simply the best appointed we have rented. Ever. Nothing was wanting. Kitchen was very well equipped and allowed us to cook when we wanted, but also very good local restaurants nearby.

Celle is a beautiful rural village. Incredibly quiet and peaceful. A great antidote to our everyday lives. It is well positioned as a base to visit the sites of Tuscany. I hope we will be back.

A Fabulous Place / Great Owners

  • 5 of 5

Gill and Ken have to job of holiday property owners down to a fine art! The place is lovely and the apartment was stocked with everything you need. My wife reckoned that the kitchen was better stocked than ours at home. The swimming pool is cleaned every morning at 6am. The property (La Sinfonia) is finished to a very high standard. Gill and Ken go out of their way to ensure that your stay is as relaxed as possible. I would recommend Celle to anyone wanting a relaxed holiday. A visit to the nearby restaurants Mulon (at the bottom of the hill) and La Fonte (further up the valley) is a must! Keeping to their attention to detail, each apartment has folders full of information on local restaurants and attractions. While we were there, Gill and Ken heard about a new sea swimming area near Pisa which was cordoned off by a rock wall so that it was safe for children - they travelled to visit (and assess) it before including it in their info on attractions! It's comforting to know that Gill and Ken will have reviewed all attractions they recommend.

Amazing place to relax and unwind

  • 5 of 5

Sinfonia is a beautifully restored and furnished apartment, set high up in the hills of Celle dei Puccini with far reaching views over the wooded hills north of Lucca. The apartment offers a good size living area with carefully chosen furniture and décor which really compliments the building. There is a magnificent wood burning stove as you enter the living room, whose flue travels up through a vaulted ceiling. A real wow. The kitchen is modern and very well equipped with all the utensils any holiday maker would need and everything is meticulously clean. There is a downstairs bathroom with shower, very handy when just returning from the pool. Upstairs there is a lovely twin bedroom and double bedroom with a further good size bathroom. Off the kitchen is a small balcony with a high table and 4 stools. The views from here are amazing and we spent many hours here gazing across the rooftops of the village below and the surrounding countryside. Our hosts, Gill and Ken have clearly taken a lot of time and effort in restoring this apartment and the others within the building. The restoration has been carefully considered, and the attention to detail is first class. The added benefit is that Gill and Ken live on site so if we did need anything they were on hand. Nothing was too much trouble. Outside the property there is a lovely and well maintained swimming pool with plenty of sun loungers and chairs, lawned area, raised terrace with 4 hammocks under a shaded canopy which was very welcome when it became really hot. The property also had a gas BBQ and separate eating area outside. The restaurants we ate at locally, offered excellent quality food and good value. The nearest supermarket was about 15 mins drive away and good value for money. Lucca is approximately 30 minutes drive and Pisa 1 hour 15 minutes. There are plenty of interesting places to visit within a 1.5 hour drive. We visited Lucca, Barga, and Vinci all of which are well worth going to. However, we were more than happy to just stay put at Celle Dei Puccini and relax by the pool. We will definitely be returning next year.

Another wonderful holiday

  • 5 of 5

To say that this holiday location is idyllic is an under statement. We have stayed in La Sinfonia many times over the last five years. It is a beautiful family home that has been lovingly restored and has every essential requirement for us to call this "our own" holiday home. The hospitality and kindness shown by Gill and Ken the owners keeps bringing us back to visit again and again. There is also so much to do in the area and the prime village location puts you in the heart of rural Tuscan life with the added bonus of all the history at the Puccini museum. A truely magical holiday destination, one to be highly recommended.

Amazing holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in La Sinfonia for a week last July and had an absolutely amazing time! The house is spacious, airy and extremely comfortable with absolutely everything you could possibly need for a self catering holiday. The views from the house out over the village and the surrounding hills are breathtaking especially after a thunderstorm! That was only one afternoon and the sun and heat returned very quickly afterwards! There is plenty shade around the immaculate pool and the house stays cool. Our kids (5 and 7) loved the pool and hammocks.

The village is beautiful and we had a lovely meal in the wee restaurant. Lucca is only a short drive away and well worth a visit but we left it until late afternoon so we could cycle around the walls when it was cooler.

Ken and Gill were extremely helpful in their quiet and unobtrusive way and nothing was too much trouble. They even let our wee boy help with the gardening!

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Special interest holidays:

Each of our properties has a detailed information pack that we have put together for our guests, showing places of interest, activities for all ages and we hope it will give our guests an idea of how to enjoy the Province of Tuscany to the full. To name but a few that you may wish to search on Google, Vinci, the home of Leonardo where there is an interesting museum for both children & adults showing models of his inventions. The monastry built 'in' the rock in Calomini (Eremo di Calomini) by the monks in the 7th century. Grotta del Vento, an under ground world of galleries & chambers. Parco Avventura, offers a challenge for children, youths & adults who can test their ability with suspension bridges, swinging beams, vertical nets, ropes etc. (trainers & long trousers essential) Many fabulous places for walkers, San Pellegrino to name but a few. Celle is an excellent starting point with so many things to do & see, an ideal finishing point for that important time for relaxation.

There are miles of sandy beaches within easy reach from Celle. As the crow flies the coast is not far, but as we are in the hills, it takes a little longer to reach them - about 45 mins. Most beaches in Italy are private & for E20 a day they provide loungers & parasols, the use of the WC/showers & cold drinks & snacks & that all important icecream can be bought on their 'patch'. Viareggio, Lido di Camiore, Forte di Marmi are just a few of the many stretches of beaches that can be found. The train from Lucca will take you to Pisa and Florence which makes for a more relaxing day without the worry of parking the car somewhere in the city

It is an easy journey by air from UK to Pisa. Pisa airport is a growing airport & you pass through the formalities quickly. An alternative airport is Florence. BA, Ryanair, Easy Jet & Jet 2 all service Pisa on a regular basis from all over the UK. By car from Pisa airport to Lucca is 25 mins by motorway with a further picturesque 25 mins journey to Celle following the river, then a winding, asphalt road from Diecimo. Driving from the UK is also an option which we can give advice if required.

The whole area is rich in historic & cultural interest. The charming city of Lucca – 25 mins by car, retains elements of its age & history amid its many churches, imposing palaces & in the secluded squares one finds sophisticated shops & restaurants. Florence by car - 1hr 15mins. We recommend travelling by train (a doddle) as parking can be tiresome in the City. The Chianti area between Florence and Siena (2 hrs by car - each way) is one of the most beautiful in Italy. A long day, but do'able!

Further Details:

Shops: With only 32 people living in Celle, there is not enough business to warrant shops.

Only 10 mins drive down the hill is Diecimo. There is a row of small shops run by the locals, including a bank, Post office, 2 petrol stations, chemist, a baker who bakes on the premises and a grocers next door, selling fresh fruit & veg, Opened in 2015 is a Gluten free shop. There are 2 cafes, where you can stop & have coffee & delicious cakes freshly filled rolls. A further 5 min. drive to Borgo Mozzano, there is a supermarket & large deli. An ideal shop to start your holiday shopping. There is another, larger supermarket (Esselunga) in Marlia which is in the direction of Lucca. Many great restaurants within 8-10mins drive from Celle & one in the village itself serving fresh homemade traditional Tuscan food, made with local produce & local wines. The nearest Train Station is in Diecimo. You will need to change at Lucca for Florence or Pisa. Free parking at Diecimo Station

Climate: In the Spring (April/May) & Autumn (mid Sept - mid Oct) the temperatures are at their most comfortable & pleasant. July/Aug are usually hot & temperatures tend to stay around 30 - 35 degrees. Off peak holidays also have their attraction: May/June are wonderful months to visit, when the air smells of honey & the wild flowers are abundant. This is an excellent time for walking with many walks in and around Celle.

Sept & Oct are interesting months when the grapes are picked and the wine is made. October is when the fabulous porcini mushrooms appear & the locals go hunting in secret to find them in the forests. Restaurant menus change to include delicious dishes using these precious mushrooms, precious because the season is so short. It is also the season for zucca (pumpkin) and there are zucca festivals in nearby villages where you can buy locally made produce. October is also a time for collecting & roasting chestnuts.

In the foreground and beyond, wooded slopes and picturesque villages. Celle is a peaceful place, totally unspoiled; it retains its slow tempo and traditional way of life. It has been home for generations of Italian families who still cultivate the surrounding land.   Access to Celle is by narrow, winding, asphalt road from Diecimo. There are excellent restaurants nearby. The countryside surrounding Celle, is a delight and there are pleasant walks into the woods and across the hillside. The slopes are resplendent with wild flowers, seemingly at all seasons. The heated swimming pool measures 12m x 4.5m (opens May). Comfortable sun loungers by the poolside & there is an area of shade. The views are magnificent.
