About the property

It is known that this was the 1st building to be built in the village in 1594. It has had many uses in its time and was once used as a convent with its cellars being used for the production of olive oil and wine. The olive oil is still being made by the locals from the village olives groves, including our own olive oil & wine is made from the vines grown on the hillside. We purchased the building in an almost ruined state in early 2004 after many years of it being uninhabited. (some parts over 100 yrs) It has been divided into separate dwellings, each having its own individual features & all having been lovingly restored by local craftsmen to include all the modern day appliances while maintaining the traditional Tuscan charm. There is a fascinating mixture of high ceilings, original floors, chestnut beams, stone fireplaces and terracotta floors. With a heated swimming pool set in the extensive grounds, commanding an unbroken and breathtaking views of the hills, a perfect place to relax.

During the high season our bookings are usually 'back to back' and we are not able to be flexible with our Saturday changeover day. For those families who wish to arrive a day early or stay a day longer, there is a very good and very reasonably priced local hotel in Borgo Mozzano. (Hotel Milano) Their charges include breakfast and they have family rooms for up to 5 people. They also have a restaurant. If you wish to consider this option, please do not hesitate to contact us, or if you wish, contact them direct. They do have english speaking staff available.

For folk arriving late in the evening, we can arrange for some breakfast items so that you can enjoy your first morning without having to hurry out to shop!

About Gill Clay

We 'discovered' Celle, by mistake really! In fact 'it' found 'us'! We were not actually looking to buy 'anything' 'anywhere' We had been on holiday in Lucca with an Italian friend and we were told about a Puccini concert that they hold twice during the summer, in the small hillside hamlet of Celle - the home of generations of the Puccini family. We were intrigued and drove from Lucca to Celle for the performance. Our evening was magical and it totally changed our direction in life.

We moved from Croydon to the Isle of Wight and then sold our distribution business of 27 years in 2007 - people call it retirement! We now spend half the year in the Isle of Wight and the other half in Italy. We call it a balanced life!

Gill Clay purchased this house in 1999

What makes this house unique

We live in a small hamlet village and the people in the village are our 2nd family. There are only about 35 people who still live in Celle and they are always busy growing their fruit and veg and making their wine and olive oil. We love the natural life here. When you look out onto the surrounding hills, there is a sense of calm and peace and we know that we have arrived 'home'

Notes on accommodation: The properties all have gas central heating. Gas, electric & water is included in the price. Crisp white Egyptian cotton sheets and towels including beach towels are included & changed weekly. All of the properties have been traditionally refurbished to a high standard, and the kitchens are well equipped to make cooking a joy (for those who enjoy cooking!). A travel cot and highchair is available on request. We include many items such as loo paper, tea, coffee, sugar, pepper, salt, cling film, foil, kitchen towels, d/washer & w/machine tabs, to name a few - items that we feel are essential for every day living but can be wasteful to buy for only a short stay. There are absolutely no hidden charges & we hope we have provided everything to make your stay with us relaxing, enjoyable and trouble free. We offer (if available) the use of our personal Sat Nav (Tom Tom) making siteseeing easier - on a 1st come 1st served basis. Outside: Celle, like so many Tuscan settlements, clings to the side of a hill overlooking valleys, hillsides and mountains with terraced vineyards and olive groves. In the foreground and beyond, wooded slopes and picturesque villages. Celle is a peaceful place, totally unspoiled; it retains its slow tempo and traditional way of life. It has been home for generations of Italian families who still cultivate the surrounding land.   Access to Celle is by narrow, winding, asphalt road from Diecimo. There are excellent restaurants nearby. The countryside surrounding Celle, is a delight and there are pleasant walks into the woods and across the hillside. The slopes are resplendent with wild flowers, seemingly at all seasons. The heated swimming pool measures 12m x 4.5m (opens May). Comfortable sun loungers at the poolside & there is an area of shade. The views are magnificent.

Classy Rustic Charm & All Mod Cons

  • 5 of 5

Gill & Ken's fantastic attention to detail started with their helpful directions on landing at Pisa Airport, navigating not only the roads to Celle, but also tips & suggestions about the car hire.

Celle itself is an unspoilt, pretty village clinging to the stunning hills above Lucca. The accommodation is at the top of the village commanding views right along the valley over the terracotta rooftops below. All of Gill & Ken's properties are centuries old village homes beautifully restored to their original glory, Stylish and with superior, well maintained modern facilities. The kitchen was particularly well appointed in holiday let terms & made cooking with the local produce a joy. The cleanliness was faultless.

Gill & Ken are perfect owner/managers: helpful & hospitable, but never intrusive. They supply excellent books of suggestions of where to eat, walk, sight see or seek adventure and are also ready to answer all your questions about the locale. There is so much to do. The hiking is superb & there are also caving & swimming activities, though we limited the latter to sunbathing around & swimming in the heated pool, situated on it's delightful hillside terrace.

Local places to eat are many if you are willing to drive a short distance. A certain level of mobility is needed to walk up from the car park to the accommodation.

This is a truly idyllic place and we look forward to a return visit very soon. We would recommend this place to anyone who appreciates great natural beauty, stylish living & tranquility.

Best vacation location

  • 5 of 5

One of the best vacations we have ever had. The villa has a breathtaking view like something you'd see in a travel magazine. The location was great, because the major cities like Florence, Siena, and Rome, could be done in a day trip. Not only that, but there was plenty to do in town. The villa is also ideal for just spending a whole day relaxing by the pool and cooking dinner in the fully furnished and stocked kitchen. Fresh fruit and local wine were waiting for us when we arrived. There's also a grocery store just a few minutes away where you can pick up more groceries and any other items you may need. Whats more, the hosts are one of the most genuine and heartfelt people you will ever meet. They have no problem with showing you the region and telling you the best spots to visit in Italy. Ultimately, it is the best option if you want a genuine Tuscan experience and for a headquarters for your Italian Adventure.

Smith Family Review

  • 5 of 5

On our third return visit to Celle, we found everything as perfect as ever! Wonderful clean, well equipped kitchen, comfortable furniture and rooms and excellent facilities. The village and area are simply wonderful if you like peace, quiet and nature. Nothing, however, can compare to the warmth and care of the hosts who absolutely make our holiday by considering every possible comfort and luxury. They are happy to recommend restaurants and trips out personally and maintain the property and pool to excellent standards. We are returning next year, already booked!

Over and above

  • 5 of 5

Gill and Ken are the most thoughtful owners! We have travelled extensively but we have never been so well looked after! Nothing is too much trouble! On our late arrival, dinner supplies and breakfast for the next day had all been prepared! The Peroni and red wine also went down a treat! Reservations to restaurants were made for us! The directions and local information that was prepared made our stay stress and hassle free! Everyone in our party loved the pizza night that Gill and Ken arranged at a locals house, along with other guests! They even taxied us there and back! The apartment and pool was just fantastic, amazing views, perfect to kick back and relax! We had some lovely meals in local restaurants a short drive away! We visited Lucca and Pisa several times for shopping, ice creams, bike rides, food and culture. Our stay ended with a concert in the village to celebrate Puccini, with opera singers and music! Our 5 year old didn't want to leave, this was the same for her Grand Parents! A perfect holiday!
