Filomena (3 Bedrooms, Sleeps 6 + 1
Entrance to this spacious property is made from the terrace, thro' the original stone doorway bearing the date 1594. The door leads straight into a large comfortably furnished living rm with Wifi, TV & DVD player. Stone staircase leads to 1 twin/double bedroom (extra put-u-up bed available) & 1 double bedroom with shared bathroom with shower. On the landing there is a roof terrace with views over the valley & rooftops. On the groundfloor, there is a double/twin bedroom with en-suite shower room & small balcony. A separate large kitchen dining room with original stone fireplace & a farmhouse table which comfortably seats 8. The kitchen is well equipped, w/machine, dishwasher, microwave & fridge/freezer. The single beds can be used to form large double beds. There is patio furniture on the terrace at the entrance of the house allowing alfresco dining, with a further terrace, via steps leading up to an elevated area with more panoramic views of the valley. We have upgraded to Gas BBQ's!!
It is known that this was the 1st building to be built in the village in 1594. It has had many uses in its time and was once used as a convent with its cellars being used for the production of olive oil and wine. The olive oil is still being made by the locals from the village olives groves, including our own olive oil & wine is made from the vines grown on the hillside. We purchased the building in an almost ruined state in early 2004 after many years of it being uninhabited. (some parts over 100 yrs) It has been divided into separate dwellings, each having its own individual features & all having been lovingly restored by local craftsmen to include all the modern day appliances while maintaining the traditional Tuscan charm. There is a fascinating mixture of high ceilings, original floors, chestnut beams, stone fireplaces and terracotta floors. With a heated swimming pool set in the extensive grounds, commanding an unbroken and breathtaking views of the hills, a perfect place to relax.
MIDWEEK ARRIVAL OPTION
During the high season our bookings are usually 'back to back' and we are not able to be flexible with our Saturday changeover day. For those families who wish to arrive a day early or stay a day longer, there is a very good and very reasonably priced local hotel in Borgo Mozzano. (Hotel Milano) Their charges include breakfast and they have family rooms for up to 5 people. They also have a restaurant. If you wish to consider this option, please do not hesitate to contact us, or if you wish, contact them direct. They do have english speaking staff available.
For folk arriving late in the evening, we can arrange for some breakfast items so that you can enjoy your first morning without having to hurry out to shop!

About Gill Clay
We 'discovered' Celle, by mistake really! In fact 'it' found 'us'! We were not actually looking to buy 'anything' 'anywhere' We had been on holiday in Lucca with an Italian friend and we were told about a Puccini concert that they hold twice during the summer, in the small hillside hamlet of Celle - the home of generations of the Puccini family. We were intrigued and drove from Lucca to Celle for the performance. Our evening was magical and it totally changed our direction in life.
We moved from Croydon to the Isle of Wight and then sold our distribution business of 27 years in 2007 - people call it retirement! We now spend half the year in the Isle of Wight and the other half in Italy. We call it a balanced life!
Gill Clay purchased this house in 1999
What makes this house unique
We live in a small hamlet village and the people in the village are our 2nd family. There are only about 35 people who still live in Celle and they are always busy growing their fruit and veg and making their wine and olive oil. We love the natural life here. When you look out onto the surrounding hills, there is a sense of calm and peace and we know that we have arrived 'home'

Simply the best
One of the best vacations we have ever had. The villa has a breathtaking view like something you'd see in a travel magazine. The location was great, because the major cities like Florence, Siena, and Rome, could be done in a day trip. Not only that, but there was plenty to do in town. The villa is also ideal for just spending a whole day relaxing by the pool and cooking dinner in the fully furnished and stocked kitchen. Fresh fruit and local wine were waiting for us when we arrived. There's also a grocery store just a few minutes away where you can pick up more groceries and any other items you may need. Whats more, the hosts are one of the most genuine and heartfelt people you will ever meet. They have no problem with showing you the region and telling you the best spots to visit in Italy. Ultimately, it is the best option if you want a genuine Tuscan experience and for a headquarters for your Italian Adventure.
Picturesque, relaxing, and great hospitality
This is a first for me - a five star review! I normally consider a four star review as excellent as there's always room for improvement. Not in this case. They have thought of all the small details so you don't have to. Obviously this is a fantastic location - peaceful, beautiful, relaxing… I could go on. But also the little things like washing up liquid, salt, sugar and oil. The well equipped kitchen. The comfortable beds. All the modern features, but still retaining that Tuscan charm. There are so many restaurants in the area that we did not have time to sample them - we will have to come back.
The downsides? Well you must have a car and be able to walk up the steps or slope to the village. We were there when it was very hot, so I'd consider going outside school holidays.
5 star stay
This was our second visit to Gill and Ken's fantastic property. The location is perfect for a getaway-from-it-all retreat. The accommodation is excellent, clean and well-maintained and Gill and Ken have thought of everything you might need to make it a home-from-home. The kitchen is very well equipped including cool-bags for picnics and charcoal for the barbecue. If you don't fancy cooking there is a lovely restaurant in the village and great places to visit for sightseeing. Gill and Ken are superb hosts, very thoughtful and generous. I heartily recommend them and their property.
We have stayed here twice on family holidays with teenagers and we intend to return. The house is delightful - full of character, comfortable, spotless and well-equipped - and the village and area are beautiful with plenty to do. Gill and Ken are the very best of hosts: friendly and welcoming and extremely knowledgable. A real find.
Can't fault it!
From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed by our hosts Gill and Ken who were helpful and friendly without hovering around us constantly. The accommodation (Filomena) was very beautifully renovated and with all the comforts of home that you could think of. The booklet in the lounge room was especially handy, it told us of all the sights we could go and see and more importantly, all the restaurants and supermarkets that were close by. As it is located up in the hills, once you were home for the night, that was it! So having directions to the local supermarket was a real bonus. We had a fantastic time and I would recommend Gill and Ken's accommodation to anyone. Fair warning though, you will need a car, I think relying on a bus would be impossible.
An absolutely wonderful retreat!
We stayed in Il Capriccio for a week at the end of June. It is a very tastefully renovated property with all modern appliances and it provided excellent accommodation for us. The house was spotlessly clean, extremely well equipped and with lovely views over the village and beyond from the terrace at the front. Celle is situated in a beautiful, peaceful village setting and is a welcome escape from the throngs of tourists in busier towns and cities. The large heated pool is fantastic. There are hammocks to relax on as well as sun loungers around the pool and plenty equipment for the younger visitors to play with. The garden areas are immaculately kept and the views across the hills are amazing.
Gill and Ken provide the all-important human touch and are genuinely lovely hosts. They give you a warm welcome and are on hand to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout your stay. They have provided all their guests with a substantial information pack covering suggestions for day trips, restaurants etc.
Celle is within easy reach of Lucca, where it is possible to hire bikes to cycle round the city walls ? great fun! We also enjoyed a visit to the gardens at Villa Reale at Marlia and a drive north through beautiful countryside to the Devil?s Bridge at Borga del Mozzano and on to Barga.
The Molin del Volpe and La Fonte restaurants are within easy reach of Celle and we can?t recommend them both highly enough.
This was our third visit to Celle. We didn?t want to leave and we have already rebooked for next September. I guess that says it all really!
Activity and Interests
Special interest holidays:
Each of our properties has a detailed information pack that we have put together for our guests, showing places of interest, activities for all ages and we hope it will give our guests an idea of how to enjoy the Province of Tuscany to the full. To name but a few that you may wish to search on Google, Vinci, the home of Leonardo where there is an interesting museum for both children & adults showing models of his inventions. The monastry built 'in' the rock in Calomini (Eremo di Calomini) by the monks in the 7th century. Grotta del Vento, an under ground world of galleries & chambers. Parco Avventura, offers a challenge for children, youths & adults who can test their ability with suspension bridges, swinging beams, vertical nets, ropes etc. (trainers & long trousers essential) Many fabulous places for walkers, San Pellegrino to name but a few. Celle is an excellent starting point with so many things to do & see, an ideal finishing point for that important time for relaxation.
There are miles of sandy beaches within easy reach from Celle. As the crow flies the coast is not far, but as we are in the hills, it takes a little longer to reach them - about 45 mins. Most beaches in Italy are private & for E20 a day they provide loungers & parasols, the use of the WC/showers & cold drinks & snacks & that all important icecream can be bought on their 'patch'. Viareggio, Lido di Camiore, Forte di Marmi are just a few of the many stretches of beaches that can be found. The train from Lucca will take you to Pisa and Florence which makes for a more relaxing day without the worry of parking the car somewhere in the city
It is an easy journey by air from UK to Pisa. Pisa airport is a growing airport & you pass through the formalities quickly. An alternative airport is Florence. BA, Ryanair, Easy Jet & Jet 2 all service Pisa on a regular basis from all over the UK. By car from Pisa airport to Lucca is 25 mins by motorway with a further picturesque 25 mins journey to Celle following the river, then a winding, asphalt road from Diecimo. Driving from the UK is also an option which we can give advice if required.
The whole area is rich in historic & cultural interest. The charming city of Lucca – 25 mins by car, retains elements of its age & history amid its many churches, imposing palaces & in the secluded squares one finds sophisticated shops & restaurants. Florence by car - 1hr 15mins. We recommend travelling by train (a doddle) as parking can be tiresome in the City. The Chianti area between Florence and Siena (2 hrs by car - each way) is one of the most beautiful in Italy. A long day, but do'able!
Shops: With only 32 people living in Celle, there is not enough business to warrant shops.
Only 10 mins drive down the hill is Diecimo. There is a row of small shops run by the locals, including a bank, Post office, 2 petrol stations, chemist, a baker who bakes on the premises and a grocers next door, selling fresh fruit & veg, Opened in 2015 is a Gluten free shop. There are 2 cafes, where you can stop & have coffee & delicious cakes freshly filled rolls. A further 5 min. drive to Borgo Mozzano, there is a supermarket & large deli. An ideal shop to start your holiday shopping. There is another, larger supermarket (Esselunga) in Marlia which is in the direction of Lucca. Many great restaurants within 8-10mins drive from Celle & one in the village itself serving fresh homemade traditional Tuscan food, made with local produce & local wines. The nearest Train Station is in Diecimo. You will need to change at Lucca for Florence or Pisa. Free parking at Diecimo Station
Climate: In the Spring (April/May) & Autumn (mid Sept - mid Oct) the temperatures are at their most comfortable & pleasant. July/Aug are usually hot & temperatures tend to stay around 30 - 35 degrees. Off peak holidays also have their attraction: May/June are wonderful months to visit, when the air smells of honey & the wild flowers are abundant. This is an excellent time for walking with many walks in and around Celle.
Sept & Oct are interesting months when the grapes are picked and the wine is made. October is when the fabulous porcini mushrooms appear & the locals go hunting in secret to find them in the forests. Restaurant menus change to include delicious dishes using these precious mushrooms, precious because the season is so short. It is also the season for zucca (pumpkin) and there are zucca festivals in nearby villages where you can buy locally made produce. October is also a time for collecting & roasting chestnuts.

Outside: Celle, like so many Tuscan settlements, clings to the side of a hill overlooking valleys, hillsides and mountains with terraced vineyards and olive groves. In the foreground and beyond, wooded slopes and picturesque villages. Celle is a peaceful place, totally unspoiled; it retains its slow tempo and traditional way of life. It has been home for generations of Italian families who still cultivate the surrounding land. Access to Celle is by narrow, winding, asphalt road from Diecimo. There are excellent restaurants nearby. The countryside surrounding Celle, is a delight and there are pleasant walks into the woods and across the hillside. The slopes are resplendent with wild flowers, seemingly at all seasons. The heated s/pool measures 12m x 4.5m (opens May). Comfortable sun loungers are closeby the poolside & there is an area of shade. The views are magnificent.
