We are Ian & Lisa Elsey and we live here at Chez Augros in Vibrac in Charente Maritime with our two daughters, Katrina and Rebecca who go to school locally. We moved here in 2005, when the farmhouse was in need of near-total renovation and we've done most of the work ourselves, so were able to make things as comfortable and efficient as possible.
We love this unspoilt, rural area that we live in - the roads are quiet and even the towns are fairly relaxed most of the time. The coast can get fairly busy in the summer, but it's easy to visit for a day, then escape back to our rural paradise!
Lisa Elsey purchased this farmhouse in 2005
We chose this area because it's close to so many things to see & do - Bordeaux and Saintes are both World Heritage sites, and we're also within easy reach of the gorgeous sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast but at the same time, we're located at the edge of a sleepy village - we didn't want to be in town, but didn't want to be cut off from civilisation, either! This is the second sunniest region of France, and being sun- and water-lovers it's just perfect for us. The weather is reflected in the large swathes of sunflowers and vines which surround us each summer, and which give us a tranquil landscape we're sure you'll love too.
We particularly love our glorious pool area - we keep the water nicely heated from early May to late September, and find that it's a delightful place to relax & unwind, even in Spring & Autumn. It's also the perfect place to cool off and take it easy after a hot day sightseeing, its views over the surrounding farmland make it a delightful place to chill out.
You'll also appreciate your dedicated outside space - we find ourselves spending most of our evenings outside in the summer and it's important to us to have somewhere pleasant and private to relax.
Extremely comfortable gite, very well stocked (just like home!) and the pool was beautifully warm and just exactly as the photos had shown. The owners were very welcoming and so helpful as well. We loved it so much, we intend to go back next year to explore more of this lovely area.
We loved it here! This well run, little group of 4 gites is set in a courtyard surrounded by beautiful countryside, vineyards and fields of sunflowers. The owners are very welcoming and relaxed and were happy to accommodate our last minute booking and our very late night arrival. We travelled with two boys, aged 10 and 13 and L'Atelier and the local area had everything we needed for a family holiday. The gite is comfortable and practical and we enjoyed having a private garden area as well as the larger grounds. The boys loved the quirky little twin bedroom with its beamed ceiling and " secret" door. The pool area is lovely and we enjoyed being able to swim in the warm evenings, after a busy day out, and, even with other families on site, we often had the pool to ourselves. The gardens have enough space and toys for everyone, and the neighbouring farm provides the sound of cockerels crowing and a very friendly visiting cat! The detailed local information folders, provided in the gite, were invaluable and we enjoyed visits to the local leisure lakes, the markets ( night and day) in Montendre, restaurants in Jonzac and longer trips to Aqualand and Vallee des Singes. There really is nothing bad to say about this place, we just wish we had discovered it sooner and wish we could have stayed longer! We would love to return.
We had a great time: beautiful area and countryside, peace and quiet, great pool for all (our kids were never out of it) and nice accommodation. Location ideal for days out to local family attractions / activities. All in all a very enjoyable stay.
We had a wonderful week stay at L'Atelier. Lisa was extremely helpful during the booking process and was super quick at replying to emails and answering numerous questions - thank you Lisa! The gite was lovely and clean with everything that you could need. The pool area was fantastic and the location was great for getting to Saintes and Cognac within the hour. Enjoyed very much - thank you!
Our hosts Lisa, Ian and girls were extremely helpful and friendly. The property was clean and had all the facilities needed. We would have no hesitation in recommending Chez Augros and we will certainly return on our next visit to France.
This was the best equipped gite we have stayed in. Lisa and Ian have thought of every eventuality and catered for it! The heated pool was wonderfully warm and there is so much space around it to feel you are not 'on top of other people' although a lot of the time we had it to ourselves. I needed to use the medical service while we were there and Lisa went out of her way to help with that. We visited many of the places they recommended and enjoyed them all (particularly the Cognac distilleries!). The Gironde estuary is within easy reach so you have both coast and countryside to enjoy. We would certainly consider coming again perhaps with our extended family and having the convenience of the interconnecting gites. All in all a very enjoyable holiday!
