About the property

FR1842

La Croisette is an early 19th century farm complex, which was lavishly renovated in 2006. The Farmhouse is a pretty traditional Provencal farmhouse dating from c1835. Oak Alley is largely a newly built barn conversion with traditional features, but designed to be compatible with wheel chair use, on the ground floor. It is close to the centre of the small friendly agricultural village of Grillon, nestling around the base of its ancient citadel. Simple shopping and 2 bars and a restaurant are within 3 minutes walking distance. Situated in the Cotes du Rhone area between Valreas and the picturesque Chateau and village of Grignan, it provides splendid opportunities for exploring northern Provence. Ideal for peaceful relaxation or the more energetic holiday maker. Would appeal especially to walkers, cyclists and winetasters.

About Jennifer Green

Nigel Cox is a retired physician (Rheumatologist). He retired from Medicine in 2009. His main enthusiasms are food and drink in convivial company, architecture, history, classical music (at which he sadly has no playing ability whatsoever), playing Eton fives (which he still does two or three times a week), croquet, and painting. In 2009 he cycled down to Grillon from England; a trip he is unlikely to repeat.

Jennifer Green is a freelance management and training consultant, who fits her work around both her family and home activities. When she has any spare time, it is spent on family research, uncovering the untold stories of previous generations. She loves cooking and entertaining; and is an unashamed Francophile, although her French language skills are not as good as she would like.

Jennifer Green purchased this house in 2003

Why Jennifer Green chose Haut-Vaucluse

We bought La Croisette, after we got married in 2003. It was then a run-down, disused Farm, which had not been lived in since the early 1970’s. The farm, built in 1853, consisted of an old house with no facilities, a number of barns and outhouses and a large dirt yard, but Grillon had everything we wanted in a location including easy access to the centre of an agricultural working village.

We immediately fell in love with it, and spent the next two years carefully restoring the farmhouse, converting the adjacent barns for our own occupation, and building Oak Alley, which is virtually a new build from the ruins of the old forge, and is designed to be suitable for wheelchair accessibility on the ground floor. The total project did turn out rather larger than we had originally intended, and also included installing a swimming pool and two Eton fives courts. A slightly quirky plan it has to be admitted, but one which we have never regretted as it enables us to share the peace and slow moving pace of La Croisette and the beautiful surrounding area with our many friends, family and guests.

What makes this house unique

This part of France is amazingly varied. It has everything - mountains, picturesque hilltop villages, all-year round sunshine, great wine and vineyards; not to mention fantastic walking and cycling country. The lavendar fields in early summer are truly breath-taking. When we are here, we quickly relax and the pace of life slows right down. We have time to appreciate the good things in life, and all our guests seem to feel the same.

Brilliant Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in Oak Alley, the house met all the needs of two families with 5 children. The setting was lovely and we really enjoyed our time using the pool, games area, garden, evening bbq's. Learning to play Eaton 5's was great fun for parents and kids. The owners were really friendly and helpful, we can highly recommend staying here.

The local village was pretty and we had many relaxing evenings in the local bar/restaurant. Lots of places to visit nearby - canoeing, roman ruins, tree climbing, mountains, swimming, bike rides, nice villages. All made for a great combination of activity and relaxation.

Superb spot to relax

  • 5 of 5

We arranged to visit Friday to Friday by special arrangement as one of our party was constrained by work dates and the owners made a great effort to ensure everything was just right.

The accommodation, outfitting and facilities were all first class and pretty much everything you could want or need for a few wonderful days in Provence was provided.

We had a mixed bunch from teens through to granny but the layout of the house meant everyone could get on and do their own thing if necessary, whilst being plenty big enough for family games round the table.

Would definitely recommend a car, because there are so many things to see in easy reach of the village. Ancient towns, River gorges, Historic sights and charming villages are all within an hour or so by car and there is a market somewhere almost every day!

We also made a lot of use of the pool and the lawn, and with a bit more energy might even have had a go on the cycles which were available, but chilling out in the sunshine was good too.

Thoroughly recommend these houses for anyone looking for a civilized place to stay off the beaten track just enough...
