Cottages near Port Launay, Finistere, Brittany - Tranquil, but far from remote, just 5 mins from picturesque Port Launay and 10 mins from Chateaulin

We are situated in an enviable position in a stunning wooded river valley, peaceful but just a 20 min walk to the 1st lock gates on the Brest/Nantes canal and a few minutes longer to our village of Port Launay and 10 minutes drive to the larger shopping centre of Chateaulin. We have large grounds which are safe for children to play in. There is a 12' trampoline with enclosure, swings and seesaws. Sunbathe on one of our loungers or sit in our shady orchard, BBQ on one of the sun terraces and enjoy the views. Near the very pretty village of Port Launay, overlooking the slow flowing river Aulne, voted the most salmon rich river in France. Port Launay has also featured in magazines as being one of the prettiest port villages in France. We are constantly told by our visitors how well situated we are for everything! The many beaches, the numerous pretty little villages and the larger cosmopolitan cities.

About Val Bennett

My husband and I bought Rest Huella in 1992, it was rundown and we knew it would need a lot of work.

We looked at other properties but kept coming back to Rest Huella as we just loved the area it was in. It seemed to have everything, near the river, close to beaches and in a beautiful valley.

Luckily my husband has been a builder all of his life, so we set about restoring the farmhouse first of all, then 2 barn conversions during the following 4 years.

We rented out the properties as holiday lets from our home in England, but moved over here permanently 11 years ago and so have been able to fulfil all our ambitions of landscaping the gardens and keeping it all looking nice and welcoming for our visitors.

Why Val Bennett chose Finistere

We came here from Cornwall and there are a lot of similarities. We always say, it's like Cornwall was 40 years ago.

We love the area, it is so picturesque, we like being near water and we are on the first lock gates from the sea on the Nantes to Brest canal. We love to watch the boats locking in and out and gliding silently up and down river. The boats moored up along the river banks and the crescent of old houses makes Port Launay special. People come from all over France to photograph the pretty villages around us.

We are 12 miles from all the lovely beaches, small coves with rock pools and long white sandy beaches used for sand yachting and wind surfing. Safe, clean and never crowded.

Our farmhouse and cottage are just 2 miles into the countryside in the beautiful wooded Aulne valley

What makes this farmhouse unique

If you are looking for a restful, stress free holiday, look no further. Relax on our sun loungers on one of the terraces overlooking stunning scenery and enjoy nothing but the sound of the birds, oh, you may see one or two cars or the odd tractor pass by on the quiet country road.

Peaceful and tranquil we are, but not remote! Just 2 miles to the village of Port Launay on the river and 4 miles to the busy market town of Chateaulin which has 3 supermarkets, many shops, restaurants, bars and pavement cafes, also on the river.

All of our visitors, many come back time after time, all say what an ideal position we are in for everything.

We have everything here in Chateaulin, horse riding, swimming pool, tennis, disco, kayaking etc.

Special interest holidays:

As we have a very large drive in hangar on the premises, our property would be suitable for car/motorcycle club events.

A ramblers paradise with the peaceful country lanes and canal towpaths, also the wooded river valley which is ideal for orienteering and has allotted walks with stunning views over Port Launay and the surrounding area.

Coast/Beach:

We are 12 miles from long wide sandy beaches and smaller rocky coves. Clean seas, often warm, fine sands, safe bathing and never crowded. Pentrez Plage at St. Nic is very long and is used by sand yachts in permitted areas. Plomodiern has smaller beaches with coves and rock pools. St. Anne de Pilaud has a central rocky 'island' for sheltering in or from the sun. There are many beaches in the area, all easily accessible.

Travel:

Our nearest airport is Brest which is 35 mins away by car, car hire is available there. Rennes airport is 2 hours distant by car. The ferry port of Roscoff is 1 hours drive, St, Malo, 2.5 hours, Cherbourg 4.5 hours.

Distances:

Port Launay, has a friendly bar, and a boulangerie, Chateaulin, our local town is 1 mile further on with it's wide range of bars, restaurants, shops and supermarkets,a busy street market is held here on both banks of the river on Thursdays. We are in an ideal position for the beaches, the many interesting little villages, such as Locronan, unique medieval village where Roman Polanski filmed 'Tess'. Douarnenez with it's extensive ship museum and harbourside restaurants.

Further Details:

We are 20 mins from beautiful Quimper with its famous cathedral and old timbered buildings overhanging the narrow streets. There is plenty to see and do here. One can buy traditional Breton fare or the latest fashions and has to be on everyone's 'must see' list. Sit out in one of the sunny courtyards and have lunch or just a drink outside one of the many pavement cafes. The cathedral of St. Corentin is magnificent and dominates the large square with its fountains and children's carousel.

Our area is a walkers paradise, there are several routes to take, signposted along the river and across the fields, through the woods, along the canal tow paths etc. Equally for the cyclist, where there are cycle paths running alongside the canal. There is horse riding, fishing, (river and sea), kayaking, tennis, indoor swimming pool. There is also a well established and well known discotheque in Chateaulin for those who want the night life!.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Rest Huella farmhouse and L'Ecurie cottage have wood burners and convector heaters. The properties are suitable for children, there are also cots and highchairs in each property. There are plug in electric fans to keep cool in the summer. Rest Huella is west facing and L'Ecurie is south facing. Outside: Rest Huella has extensive grounds with no shortage of tables and chairs for dining out, there is plenty of choice between the 2 properties so therefore you are not on top of each other. The Farmhouse has tables and chairs outside and L'Ecurie has its own patio with table and chairs. Alternatively one can sit out on the large terrace overlooking the small orchard or on the large lawned area. There is also another patio area with built in barbecue. Sun loungers are provided as well as individual chairs. There are also several mobile barbecues to choose from as well as the purpose built ones. This is all surrounded by fields apart from the side which accesses our long driveway from the quiet country road. The canalised river which comes in from the sea is on the far side of the valley and one can sit and watch the masts and sails of the boats as they come up river towards the lock gates as they enter into Port Launay.

Fabulous accommodation in a beautiful area. The house is well equipped, clean, comfortable and full of character and has a lovely garden, loungers and barbecues outside. Val and Alan are lovely - welcoming and helpful with lots of local knowledge. The drive to Rest Huella alongside the canal and under a huge viaduct made every journey special.

There is a weekly market at nearby Chateaulin and there is a railway station there if you fancy giving the car a day off! There are a couple of average restaurants in Chateaulin as well but you need to travel a bit further for something decent. The nearest beach was about 15 miles of easy road and were gorgeous - most have a supervised bathing area as well.

Definitely the best gite we have stayed in and I would happily recommend it. We can't wait to return.

Booking Notes:
Initial enquiries by email or telephone for availability. 25% deposit is required on booking, the balance due no later than a month prior to arrival. Payments can be made by cheque or direct bank transfer. Clear directions will be sent on receipt. Electric, calor gas where required is supplied f.o.c. as are tea towels. All duvets and pillows are provided, linen is included in with the price as are towels. Logs in winter can be bought from us at cost price.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday unless out of season when we can be more flexible. Departures before 10am and arrivals not before 4pm please unless pre-arranged.

Notes on prices:
All beds will be freshly made up for your arrival and 2 towels per person are included.

25% required on booking, the balance to be sent 1 month prior to arrival.
