About the Owner

We spent our holidays, exploring France, for 12 years, until we fell in love with La Rose des Vents on a rainy day in October. It ticked all the boxes - we saw that, here, we could offer the type of holiday accommodation, we would like to stay in! So we took the plunge, gave up our busy careers in the UK , in management and engineering and moved with our cat, Mischa, to this beautiful region. Since then we have lavished care and attention renovating the properties to ensure our guests have a great holiday and along the way learned to speak French, made lots of friends, sampled numerous restaurants, were adopted by 3 kittens - Honey, Lucy and Rosie, joined a couple of classic car clubs and explored the area in our Morgan sports cars -our other great love.

Fantastic location in a former vineyard. Fully equipped with every possible item for a relaxing holiday.

The facilities were very clean and well maintained with a real attention to detail. The hosts, Lyn and Graham were excellent and were on hand to deal with any queries. This was our second visit and i would fully recommend a visit.

Manor Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We have had the pleasure of staying in Manor Cottage for the past 2 years and can't wait to visit for a 3rd time this summer.

Lyn and Graham are the perfect hosts and go the extra nine yards to make everything perfect.

The cottage is immaculate and furnished to an extremely high standard set in it's own private garden with 2 outside dining areas making summer evenings a delight.

Everything is first class down to the detailed scenic drive routes of the surrounding picturesque area. The swimming pool and surrounding area once again is an impeccable reflection on the hosts professionalism.

We highly recommend La Rose des Vent as a holiday destination for the discerning traveller.

From the Owner

We had visited this Region before, and loved everything about it - the climate, relaxing lifestyle and people. We live in a small hamlet - no traffic noise, just birdsong (the nightingales are magical)& the occasional tractor. No light pollution - the stars at night are incredible & in summer guests enjoy a midnight swim whilst watching the meteorite showers! However we are not isolated, but ideally located. Cognac is just 15 mins drive away and Saintes & St Jean d'Angely close by. In 45 mins we can be sitting on the beach, or for a fix of city life, be in Bordeaux within an hour and a half. It is beautiful driving country on near deserted roads, through rolling vineyards and there is always something going on - street theatre, music festivals, firework displays, artisan markets and fetes.

Special interest holidays:

This is delightful driving country, and the resident owners, who have owned classic cars for over 25 years, offer a range of detailed scenic drives which will take you off the beaten track, through picturesque countryside to unspoilt villages in the Charente, Charente Maritime, Dordogne and Bordeaux regions. If you would like to experience a drive through the vineyards in an open top sports car, you can enjoy a complimentary ride in one of our 4 seater Morgans during your stay - if you are very keen, you can hire one during your stay!

Whatever makes your perfect holiday - exploring this beautiful Region; soaking up the atmosphere in the pavement cafes; sampling the local food and wine; playing golf; a family holiday with the children or just chilling out you can be assured of a very warm welcome at La Rose des Vents.

The Atlantic beaches are under an hour away and stretch from Chatelaillon-Plage with its 2 miles of golden sands (the safest on the Atlantic coast) and brightly coloured villas to La Rochelle. Visit Royan one of France's leading seaside resorts, drive along the Cote Sauvage with it's powerful breakers or take the toll bride to the Ile de Re and wander through an unspoiled island of sandy beaches, whitewashed houses, hollyhocks, and bustling harbours lined with cafes and restaurants.

La Tacherie is located on the border of the Charente Maritime and Charente and is just 4.5 hrs drive from St Malo, the nearest port, or 7.5 hrs from the channel tunnel, and the TGV station at Angouleme is 45 minutes drive away.

The area is well served by low cost airlines, La Rochelle is 1 hr 15 minutes drive, and Poitiers, Bordeaux and Limoges are all within easy reach - approx 2 hrs drive.

The market town of Matha is 5 mins away and Cognac 15 mins by car. Saintes with its Roman amphitheatre is 30 mins away and the coast can be reached in 45 minutes. Take time to linger in a quayside restaurant or wander through the ancient arcaded shopping centre of La Rochelle. La Corderie Royal and the historic naval dockyards of Rochefort is 1 hr away. Within 1.5 hrs you could be in the beautiful city of Bordeaux, the vineyards of St Emilion or even picturesque Brantome in the Dordogne.

Further Details:

The local market town of Matha, has a full range of shops, banks and supermarkets. There is a market somewhere near us, every day of the week - including Sundays. There is an excellent choice of restaurants, within 15 minutes drive including gourmet dining. Cycles suitable for all members of the family (safety helmets, and chariots for youngsters) can be hired from a local company, which will arrange for the cycles to be delivered to the cottages ready for your arrival. Further details are available from the resident owners.

For your first night of your stay, if you wish, you can reserve a 3 or 4 course dinner with wine, to be served in your cottage or under the stars in the garden. Put the children to bed, light the candles and sit back and relax.

For those with limited time, 3 night B & B mini breaks which includes a 4 course dinner on the first night, are also available outside high season, from £185 per person. Please see owners website for full details.
