Bright and spacious (90 sqm) 2-bedroom apartment in the centre of the Old Town, just 2 minutes from Plaza de España
Casa del Arte is situated in the quiet & beautiful medieval quarter of Vejer, 2 mins from the delightful central square - Plaza de España - with its amazing fountain and its restaurants and bars. It is on the first floor of one of the most historic townhouses in Vejer. The common patio is entered through thick wooden doors and then a wrought iron gateway. The flat blends traditional Moorish features with modern facilities. The interior has been completely renovated, utilising the large floor area to stunning effect. Hand-made terracotta floor tiles run throughout the property, with hand-stained doors and Arabic metal lanterns giving their own special and individual touch.
The thick walls of this historic building protect those inside from the Summer heat so that you feel secure and comfortable inside this hidden gem. Inside the apartment there is a wonderful feeling of space and light. Through each window is a wrought-iron balcony with typical Spanish roll-down shutters. From the living room you can sit and look over the bougainvillea-covered roof of the house next door to the city walls and the countryside down below. The whole flat is bathed in that special light of the Costa de la Luz.
Both bedrooms are a good size and have double beds and balconies. There is also a sofa-bed in the living room that can be used for extra guests.
The kitchen is large and again has a balcony. It also has a washing machine, oven, ceramic hob, toaster, juicer and the usual pots and pans etc. In the living room is a flat-screen TV and blu-ray player, plus a sound system that takes an iPhone or iPod. There are also books and DVDs which guests are welcome to borrow.
The bathroom has a shower over the bath and towels and bedlinen are provided.
High on a hill, nestled between the sierras and the sea, Vejer de la Frontera is a beautifully preserved, white hilltop village. It was voted the prettiest white hilltop town in Spain and a heritage site by the Spanish Government in 1978. Vejer still retains a potent Moorish character so with its Christian churches and convents, Moorish architecture and a Jewish quarter, it is a microcosm of Spain's colourful history.
The wonderful thing about being in Vejer is how quickly one forgets the hustle and bustle of life in the city. The pace of life here is quintessentially Andalucian. The day often starts lazily, with a typical breakfast of freshly-squeezed orange juice, cafe con leche and tostada with tomato, garlic and olive oil, which you can have in one of many cafés.

Gorgeous apartment in a wonderful town
We stayed for 5 nights in this delightful apartment in the heart of old Vejer, which manages to be close to the action yet very peaceful. The flat is spacious, light and cool, with an excellent kitchen, and the views from the windows and roof terrace are lovely. It was great to be able to step out of the front door and straight into the old streets, with plenty of excellent bars around. We always love the Bodeguita, but the revamped market was a treat; open in the evenings for lots of different types of food, it was absolutely buzzing.
A great stay and we will definitely be back.
What a jem!
Lovely old apartment in the heart of the old town only a few minutes walk to bars (less than 1 minute to the nearest), restaurants & little shops, 10 to the nearest supermarket.
Great views from the shared roof terrace too.
Our stay has been over 3 months & it has really felt like home & although winter time we have had little need for the gas fire. The kitchen is modern and spacious with all mod-cons.
Ivan kindly allowed us to keep our bikes here which has been brilliant for exploring the wonderful countryside and coast. No need for a car as also there are frequent buses to Cadiz, Sevilla & south to Tarifa & Algeciras. Also, as its in the old town there is no parking nearby, its just possible to drive outside to unload.
Margerita the cleaner is really friendly & helpful.
Our favourite bar is El Central, 2 minutes walk, family run with lovely friendly staff and superb tapas.
The old town is quiet in winter and in January & February some of the bars are closed but we managed to find good (& cheap) ones 10-15 minutes walk in the 'new town'.
Thoroughly recommend the apartment - when we return to Vejer I would happily rent it again.
I have been using 'owners direct' for quite a number of years now and have found its quite usual for owners to put the best light they can on their properties. For instance one place in Berlin neglected to mention that the apartment was next door to a cemetery, in another, again in Berlin, they failed to mention there was no bedrooms and the single bed was actually the sofa, another place, in Vejer this time (which looked great in the pictures) had a distinct waft of sewer in several rooms, but every place i had rented i have enjoyed myself tremendously, despite the slight niggles. In Ivan's case, his apartment, which i stayed in for a month, was the first time that the actuality has outstripped the description. Its big and spacious. The kitchen area with dining table is suitable for any modern home and the abundance of French windows in every room brings in Vejer's beautiful light. God Knows how ancient the building is but the apartment has been very tastefully modernised, keeping all the old floors, doors and high ceilings. The position is second to none, central, but yet quite as the grave (excuse the pun) at night. I would happily live in Ivan's apartment and thats the first time i have felt that way about any of the properties I have rented. I will be back
Amazing apartment with scenic views
This spacious flat is situated in the heart of vejer de la frontera, the prettiest, most serene town – ideal for couples. We were lucky enough to have the apartment for a week in late June and the weather was amazing!!!
The apartment has two lovely double bedrooms and a double sofa bed – all very clean with fresh sheets and towels. It was well equipped with a very modern kitchen with everything you’ll need including a washing machine. There were balcony’s and a communal roof top terrace perfect to watch the sun set.
There are beautiful beaches only a taxi ride/car journey away but well worth it. We also were able to use the pool in a near by hotel for 5euros.
Vejer has a selection of amazing restaurants to choose from and are all-available on foot, offering the most breath-taking views. We ate in a few nights as the kitchen offers a huge dining room table and all the apparatus to do so.
I will defiantly be returning to both Vejer and this apartment, bringing friends and family. I would defiantly recommend to everyone and anyone who wants to stay in an amazing apartment in an amazing town.
Wonderful apartment set in great location.
I have had the pleasure of staying 3 times in this characterful apartment, and have loved it every time. The building has a wonderful Moorish feel with tiled floors, period doors leading into spacious rooms, and great lighting. Ivan's information regarding the accommodation, location and arrival has been very helpful. The old town is beautiful and the steep drive up is like stepping back into time. Our favourite place to eat is in the Plaza de Espana at the Hotel La Cas del Califa. If it isn't too hot the garden is a perfect setting. The beaches near by are beautiful and unspoilt, however we have found them to be rather windy so be mindful when putting up your umbrella! The town of Cadiz is well worth a day trip as is Jerez where there are very interesting trips of sherry making. I can't wait to plan my next visit.

“I came to Spain in 2003 after selling the dot com where I was IT Director. I wanted to spend 2 years living life differently, which took me to Spain to learn Spanish, then to Costa Rica to work with street kids and then to Mallorca where I worked as a photographic assistant. During my time in Spain I was in San Sebastian, Salamanca and then finally Granada. It was while in Granada that I took a trip along the coast through Andalucia and stayed in Vejer for the first time. I fell in love with the place immediately, coming back 3 or 4 times before deciding to buy Casa del Arte, so named because it was then above a little art gallery.”
Activity and Interests
Special interest holidays:
There are a couple of Spanish language schools in Vejer. Also Kite Surfing schools in the Vejer Costa and also in Tarifa.
The area nearest beaches are El Palmar and Caños de Meca, both about a 10 min drive away. Los Caños is a trendy, bohemian place for the freer spirit and El Palmar is a long white strip of sand that stretches for miles down the coast. These are both unspoilt, white sandy beaches. Surfing, windsurfing and kite-surfing are also available. Nearby Zahara de los Atunes has a crumbling old town, groovy hippie market and a resolutely laid-back feel. Bolonia further towards Tarifa has Roman remains also.
Nearest airport is Jerez, 50 mins drive away. Ryanair fly from Stansted and Frankfurt. Seville airport is approx 1 hour and 45 min drive and is served by BA. Gibraltar is approx 1 hour away and is served by BA, Iberia and Monarch. Hire cars are cheap and a good idea to enjoy the local towns and beaches.
The house is well-positioned for all of Vejer's attractions being in the centre of the old town and minutes from the Plaza de Espana. Arcos de la Frontera is about an hour away as is Jerez de la Frontera. Tarifa is about a half hour. The stunning Parque de los Alconocales for walking and cycling is an hour to an hour and a half away. There are also coastal walks close by to Vejer, as well as the possibility of walking for hours along unspoiled beaches.
Details of local restaurants and activities in folders on bookshelf in living room. Entrance road to Vejer from El Palmar passes the Tourist Office and then bike-hire shops, banks and a little supermarket. There is a bigger supermarket, SuperSol, in the new town.

From the Owner
“Of all the places I have stayed I find coming to Vejer the most calming and beautiful. The apartment is so wonderfully light and airy and the views from my apartment an elsewhere of the white houses tumbling down the hillside always enchanting. There is a blog written by Christina Wilson, a regular visitor to Vejer, that has lots of useful info about places to go etc. Vejer is the ideal place from which to explore the Atlantic Costa de la Luz (the Coast of Light) and the 'sierras' of Cádiz. Walking, golf, bike riding, trekking, bird watching, painting, Cape Trafalgar, seafaring Cádiz, seemingly endless white beaches, kite surfing, wind surfing, quiet palm-filled plazas, the sherry bodegas of Jérez, horse riding through pine forests, a day trip to Tangiers.”

- Notes on accommodation: Rubbish should be left out on the corner of c/ Eduardo Shelley and c/ Badillo - just below the entrance to the flat - and is picked up every evening between 8pm and 10pm except Saturday or the evening before a holiday. When the wind blows, especially the Levante, it can be very powerful. In this situation it is best to open one set of doors/windows at a time, so that no through-draughts are created. When open please fasten the doors with their hooks to prevent them banging and the danger of glass breaking. Tap water is safe to drink but is heavily calcified. Therefore please use bottled water in the kettle. The hot water feed to the kitchen takes a while to travel the distance from the boiler at the other end of the house, so you may prefer to leave the washing up until there is enough to make it worthwhile. The tank only has enough water for 3-4 hot showers so it is best to be as frugal as you can when showering, if you are a party of this size.
