About the Owner

As keen skiers, boarders and riders (racing & mountain), 2 old university friends convinced their long suffering partners that an apartment in the Alps was a good idea! A lot of hard work went into renovating the place into a bright, fresh apartment perfect for 4 friends or a family holiday. Now in our 5th successful year and having recently redecorated the property, we are pleased to welcome guests for 2012 and onwards. We regularly spend time in Chatel both in summer & winter and we hope you enjoy your stay as much as we do.

Place where memories are made

This is the second time we've stayed in this apartment if i could buy one this would be it .The views from the windows are fantastic. We first stayed with two children but left with four as when we got home we discovered we were having twins .The twins first holiday was to this apartment we were initially dubious about space but once we settled in we discovered it was more spacious than our house in the UK. The Twins surprised us again by learning to walk in the apartment .The village of Chatel can be reached easily by the bus outside but by personal experience twin buggy with a 5 year old on my shoulders I still reached it in 10 mins even with the gradient. The bedroom is adaptable from single beds to a bunk bed and the sofa configures into a bed but we still managed two travel cots in the bedroom plus bags (ski stuff included). The bathroom was clean and easy to use again with a fantastic view from inside the bath .The added ski locker downstairs was ample to take 3 snowboards and four sets of skis .The kitchen was easy to use and provided facilities to cook for 6 people and the Tv even has an English channel as well a the village on Tv channel which was in valuable for information .We also found the access to Switzerland was quick and allowed us to travel down the mountain Swiss side and to Verbier another memorable drive as the views are amazing with the Swiss mountains either side via the Swiss motorways in exactly 1 hour The apartment was convenient for Geneva and other area of France and Switzerland and also the mountain pass to Italy (the one used for the Italian job) .This is the place where my wife , daughter and 5 yr old son learnt to ski who seriously has the ski bug now .The balcony is spacious and even though i only used it during the ski season still manged to have my breakfast whilst admiring the view Also as being a ground floor apartment it also meant we could unload and load the car quicker via the balcony and was safer for the children . We are already talking of a return to this apartment and felt sad to leave it on both occasions but we managed breakfast in the alps lunch in Dijon dinner in Calais and a pint in the local in one day although i didn't feel the same as a pint in the local in Chatel. The owners are extremely pleasant and easily contactable .

Location

From the Owner

Chatel for us is the best of both worlds - world class skiing on your doorstep (both in France & Switzerland) and an authentic French ski town which has real character. It offers a good range of bars and restaurants along with plenty of options for ski/bike rental and shopping. Appealing in Winter with its access to so many varied runs and lunch stops - you're sure never to ski the same run unless you want to! Long alpine cruising runs or the snow parks are close by. Whilst in summer, with its world class mountain biking and hiking, parasailing, fantasticable, pool and tennis courts you (and the kids) will never get bored. Clean, fresh mountain air builds up an appetite like nothing else! The Wednesday market is a great place to try before you buy.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

Coast/Beach:

Within 1km of an alpine lake for fishing and diving. Lake Geneva is 40 mins by car - perfect for sailing in the summer. 40 mins from a Swiss Spa retreat. Three hours from the Cote d'Azur!

Travel:

For self-drive, Calais is 9 hours away. For those that fly, Chatel is approximately 90 mins from Geneva airport. Car hire (from French side of Geneva airport) is recommended as it can often work out cheaper than an airport transfer.

Buses are also available from Geneva bus station. Train to Aigle (CH) or Thonon-les-Bains (FR).

Distances:

A short stroll to the local bakery, ski hire shop, supermarket, slopes and restaurants. 1km from Chatel town centre with a free ski bus running throughout the day. 5 mins drive to Abondance village or Switzerland.

Less than an hour's drive to Thonon-les-Bains, Lake Geneva, Morzine, and Annecy. Geneva, Lausanne, Chamonix and Italy are just over an hour away.

Further Details:

Walking.

There are more than 65km of footpaths in and around Chatel and over 300km of well marked trekking routes in the Portes du Soleil. Recommended is the Lac de Vonnes and the woods surrounding it, the meadows and farms lower down the valley. Stopping off at one of the many local farms or cheeseries to taste local produce is a must!

Mountain biking.

Chatel is a very popular mountain biking resort in the summer with over 24 lifts open giving access to 580km of marked cycle tracks in the Portes Du Soleil. Bikes and equipment can be hired from the nearby ski/bike shop 2 minutes away. Contact James at Vertical Horizons.

White Water rafting.

White water rafting is done on the river Dranse. A team of well organised and professional instructors will ensure that you have a safe but thrilling day out. While you are here you can also try canyoning, white water swimming, canoeing and paragliding.

Fantasticable.

This is unique to Chatel, there are 2 fantasticable lines stretching over Plaine Dranse. Open every day from March this is truly and incredible experience where you will reach speeds of up to 100 kmh.

Horse riding.

If you wish to see the mountains on horse back then this can also be organised through the local stables.

Sailing

We would also highly recommend a day trip down to Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) for a day's sailing. The nearest school is in Thonon-les-Bains (40 mins away).
