About the property

Village Shops And Restaurants 5-10 Minutes Walk Away

A newly restored, characterful house with open beams that backs onto the living rock like most of the houses in the old village centre. The house is a comfortable and cosy base for visiting Rome and the surrounding area. High speed wi-fi coupled with a desk and typing chair also make it popular with writers and academics as a peaceful retreat that offers plenty of friendly local colour when you open the door. The adjectives that best describe Capena's historical centre are warm, friendly, laid-back, quirky, arty and pretty. The house is 45 minutes by public transport from Rome. If you have a car, you can visit excellent local pools and lakes Bracciano, Martignano, Vigo and Bolsena as well as the Sabine Hills and other interesting places to the north.

About Juliet Haydock

I am a freelance Italian-Spanish/English translator and live in Twickenham, but try to spend as much time as possible in my house in Capena, near Rome in Italy. I'm very lucky because my job does not tie me to any particular place.

Juliet Haydock purchased this house in 2006

Why Juliet Haydock chose Capena

I first went to Capena when teaching English in Rome in the early 1980s, captivated by its charm and friendliness. People still used donkeys and did all their washing at the communal washing place. Everyone made wine and you could not pass an open cantina door without being beckoned in to share a cool glass.

Weekend visits evolved into permanent residence for about two years, when I enjoyed the yearly rhythm of village life and all the festivals - while still within easy reach of Rome for work. About 12 or so years ago, I went back to Capena with my two small boys. We were welcomed with open arms and within hours a trestle table had been spread in the piazza for an impromptu party. Later, the same local builder friend who restored my larger property restored Casa Marconi as well.

What makes this house unique

Casa Marconi is ideal accommodation for a couple, either alone or with one or two small children. A lot of our guests have spent several weeks in Capena and ended up as part of the local community, even being invited to parties and for meals with the locals.

The house is very convenient as a base for visiting Rome, the lakes or the Sabine hills. It is just round the corner from a very friendly bar and two minutes away from a grocery shop. Capena also has several other shops and wonderful restaurants a few minutes away on foot.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just wanted to let you know we had a wonderful stay in Capena & totally chilled out. We loved the square and Cafe Emporio where Gabila & the locals were always so friendly & welcoming. I had the honour of meeting Rosina, who has been a favourtite artist of mine since I was a student. We also loved the food - fresh pasta from Uovo Pasta, pastry & 'gelato' shop, ham from the market as well as the meal we had at Giardino degli Ulivi.

It was nice being the only tourists in town and it was as authentic an experience of Italian life as you will ever likely to get. The house was well situated in the historic part of Capena with a sunny cafe just round the corner. The mosaic murals and seating in the historic quarter were unusual and interesting. Easy access to shops and good value restaurants.Travel into Rome by train very cheap as was car parking in station car park. Recommended for authenticity and very good value for money.

spring in Rome

  • 4 of 5

We rented this cute little house in Capena for 5 nights in May so we cold explore Rome for a couple of days without staying in the centre and also explore further afield to the lakes, Tivoli and Ostia. It was a good location and Rome could be reached in 1hr by the time you had parked and taken the Metro. But my advise would be to stay in the centre if you want to explore it properly, otherwise it is a long tiring day with lots of extra travel.

The house was clean and well furnished. A little bit musty but I suspect we were the first travellers of the season. The Wifi is good. The nearby parking was fairly secure. But the small road/alleyway which the house is located on is very busy (even midweek in May) and there is a lot of noise from cars, scooters, people and utility vehicles. The lack of any outdoor space was an issue, as there is no chance to enjoy the sunshine. Plus the downstairs is not very private. The blinds are thin to let in light in, but passers by can also see in when the lights are on. Likewise the neighbours can see directly into the bedroom if the curtains are not drawn. Still we enjoyed our stay and the trendy nearby bar a few house down the road in the Piazza was a real bonus.

Casa Marconi

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent stay in Casa Marconi! The house information was detailed and very helpful, and the house was clean and warm when we arrived. A much appreciated bottle of fantastic local wine was even waiting for us on the table! We were able to contact the house owner at any time if we had any problems and she would always reply promptly. The location was great for visiting other towns and regions, as well as being close to a direct train line into Rome. Transport into the city was very reliable and great value. Our favourite restaurant was Big Ali's - really great food at fantastic prices and very friendly service. !0 mins walk from the house is a small supermarket that had everything we needed for the week.

Would definitely visit again!

Captivating Capena

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved Casa Marconi. The house is delightful: obviously very old but with all the necessary conveniences for a modern holiday. We were fortunate to meet Juliet who showed us the old monastery and introduced us to some of the colourful locals, particularly Nando whose food we enjoyed on more than one occasion. Juliet's recommendations for restaurants and places of interest were spot on - we had numerous delicious meals in the village. The guidance for travelling to Rome and other attractions wasalso extremely helpful.

The only hiccup we had was a leaking shower which Juliet had repaired in a matter of hours.

We would love to return to Casa Marconi.

Good value, helpful owner

  • 4 of 5

Very well presented and well equipped. Everything fresh and clean. Especially appreciated the large and very comfortable bed and comfortable sofa for the evenings (very important). Typical Italian hill town with medieval enclosed 'borgo'. Appreciated the welcome touch of a bottle of wine and bowl of fruit. Not a deal breaker, but having only two windows, it is, typically for a very old house, a bit dark, but then we were only there in the evenings. We are great readers so a couple of better reading lamps near the sofa would be good.

Thank you!

our wonderful week at Cassa Marconi,

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at Cassa Marconi, which was beautifully decorated and very comfortable, particularly the bed! Capena is a real community and it was a delight to see everyday Italian family life in the tree lined Piazza della Liberta, the cafes and in the restaurants in the evening. The Rocca is a special place and its intimate medieval charm and beauty was the perfect contrast to the grandeur of Rome. Grazi Juliet!
