About the property

Lake Como, Italy - Private Location 5 min Walk to Village, Lake and Beach

Perched on the hillside, in the ancient town of Argegno. In front of you Lake Como lies stretched out in all of its glory. In the distance you see a paddle steamer lazily making its way across the lake.

You set the breakfast terrace table with a fresh brioche and a pot of steaming coffee. Another day on the lake begins....

The property is in a typical Italian house (three floors, each with a self-contained apartment) Ours is on the second floor, to reach it, you have to walk down about 20 steps .It is on a private road that is exclusively for the use of the residents in the house which is gated.

The apartment has gas central heating as well as a traditional log fire. Hot water is provided on demand from the gas boiler. There are two large bedrooms each containing a queen sized bed and a single daybed, which can convert to a double if needed. The kitchen is a brand new traditional kitchen fully equipped for all budding Italian master chefs. Drinking the water is fine as it comes from the alpine reservoirs. There is a utility room with washing machine, gas boiler and storage. The bathroom has been newly tiled with Italian marble floor and wall tiles .It has a bath/shower bidet w.c and sink with large vanity unit with large mirror.

The living room has a table that can seat 6, L-shaped sofa , single armchair, LCD TV, DVD.

There is a satellite dish that is pointed at the Astra satellite (we can receive a selecton of the free to air English speaking TV channels. We have a good selection of movies c.d’s and books available for your enjoyment. Internet is available by way free Wifi.

The balcony is large enough to enjoy alfresco dining. Every window has great lake views with the best reserved for the picture window.

We are located about 6 mins away from the village centre with a very safe pedestrian path, taking you down through the heart of the village with narrow cobbled lanes and archways, and leaving you in the middle of the Piazza where you can get fantastic ice cream made on the premises at Zoë’s. The village has a small mini market to provide you with all the basics .There is a bank with international cash machine, a small harbour with marina, fishing tackle shop, cable-car station ,to take you into the mountains to the village of Pigra where you can have the experience of Como from the sky (cable cars run every half hour with a break from 12- 2).The village has its own pebble beach with an adjoining pizzeria where you can hire sun loungers etc. or fish to your heart’s content. There is a small food market in Argegno on Monday mornings where you can get fresh meat, fish veg and locally produced cheeses. There are numerous small bars in the village and a fantastic selection of restaurants and snack bars and in the surrounding areas (La Grillia 2km up the road that the property is on,is one of our favourites with great value in a beautiful rustic Italian setting).Café Colombo is a tiny beautiful wine bar in the corner of the square with Italian 'tapas' and snacks available all day and a great Happy Hour (Free antipasti )at night. .There is a new restaurant, recently opened in the village piazzo beside the fountain, called La Piazzetta www.piazzettargegno.it which serves a wide selection of food from pizza (best in Argegno) to fine dining i.e. fresh tuna tar. The owner Christian is very nice and will try to cater for all your dining needs. Others restaurants we recommend are, Villa Belvedere, www.villabelvedere-argegno.it beside the ferry port and Crotto dei Platini www.crottodeiplatani.it (3 mins down the road towards Brienno). These are situated on the Lake with fantastic food in a magical setting. A delightful new wine bar Bistro Argegno , is only recently opened with a fantastic range of good wines available very cheaply. This also serves antipasti in the evening.

The village lies on the main lakeside road and therefore is on the main bus route up and down the lake .It also has a ferry port stop for passenger ferries (both slow ferry and hydrofoil) and these are a great way of seeing the lake which is at its best when viewed from the water. You can get daily rambler tickets so you can hop on and off at your leisure.

Bellagio is one town not to miss. Taxis are available from Café Colombo in the village Public transport is both inexpensive and reliable and runs very frequently.

Car hire is recommended as you need to explore the lake to optimize your time there although we prefer to laze on the balcony with a bottle of locally produced Prosecco and just watch the world pass by.

Within a 10 min drive north you have a huge selection of beaches, both sand (man-made) and pebble all along the lakeside. Swimming there is very safe as there are no tidal currents to worry about. Recommended is a day out on the lake on a boat which can be hired from the local boat yard ‘Turatti’ in Argegno (200 metres past the church, opposite the cable car station),tell them we sent you. No experience is necessary as the boats are very simple to operate and there are no hazards like shallows or sandbars (Como is the deepest lake in Europe). There are plenty of places to tie up for lunch or you can simply stop the boat are jump off for a swim in the warm freshwater. There is a fantastic lakeside pool (lido) in Menaggio 15min drive with an on-duty lifeguard .There is a large supermarket in Lenno (10 min drive away, north) or a shopping centre with hypermarket in Como town (20 mins drive ,south). For some retail therapy I would recommend Bellagio with current Milan fashions and some good bargains to be had in Italian designer sunglasses, handbags etc .Como is famous in the region for its silk. There is a huge outlet centre called Foxtown (info on net) just over the border in Switzerland (15 mins from Como) where the Milanese go to do serious shopping. Don't forget to bring your passport.

Italian life around the lake starts very early (the local bakery is usually sold out of most of its bread by nine thirty) and ends quite early with dinner starting at about 7and bars closing around midnight. Also everywhere is very child friendly. Getting your timing right is very important as most shops close from 12.30 until 3 and most restaurants finish serving lunch at 2 with not another bite to be got until about 5 when they fire up their pizza ovens. There is a small shop in the village where you can get most of the basics but I suggest you go to in Bennet Shopping Centre in Como Nord where there is a very large supermarket which will cater for all of your needs.

With regard to place to visit top priority is a slow ferry on the lake to anywhere!

Best places are Bellagio (a must for lunch), Menaggio, and Como lakefront (also great for shopping with a flea market on Thursday mornings and all day Saturday).

You must visit some of the villas with the most popular being Villa Carlotta http://www.villacarlotta.it/ this has beautiful gardens and is open to the public.

Villa Balbainello http://villabalbianello.com/ is another beautiful villa to visit. It now has a new next door neighbour – Virgin boss Richard Branson.

We have included some information leaflets in the 'Va Bene' folder with regard to places to visit.

Of course Switzerland is only 30 mins drive away and Lake Lugano is well worth a visit. A trip to St Moritz (1.5 hrs) will certainly be one of the highlights of your trip. I do hope this is of some help to you and don't hesitate to ask any more questions that you may have.

The most important thing is to enjoy 'La Dolce Vita' with a glass of vino on the balcony.

Wow - what a view!

  • 4 of 5

Stunning views from the apartment which is comfortable if a little basic.

A 1k walk up/down the hill to the town centre where you'll find some lovely restaurants and even lovelier people running them! Boat hire from Turati Centro a must do. Ferries around the lake from the pier very convenient. Lido a bit pricey to get to the lake for a swim. Hire a bike for a ride around the lake (or up the hills if you feel fit!). Bit of a trek to the supermarket in Lenno or Como, and limited "corner shop" options in Argegno. The town itself is beautifully situated for that view up the lake to the mountains. Struck us that everywhere on the lake requires a compromise between view, all-day sunshine, local facilities (shops, restaurants, bars, coffee shops etc), lake access, things to do etc and Argegno seems as good a compromise as we could find!

David is also a very attentive owner who made our stay very pleasant.

Only notes about this apartment which take the star off...if it had more outside space in the sunshine (which you lose in the afternoon) it would be ideal. Also it is sandwiched between top and ground floor apartments owned by the same person who is doing building works alongside at the moment (which according to David he shouldn't be during the rental season!). And finally, you have to park your car a little way away.

Great view but very noisy

  • 2 of 5

Argegno is a fantastic little town, the resturants, bars and ice cream really make it. The view from this apartment is beautiful but is spoiled by the constant (24 hour), noise from the road below the balcony. The beds are comfortable and clean but the decor is quite tired looking and the shower could do with been changed. You don't need a car to stay here as the local shops provided us with everything we needed but be warned, the walk back up from the town is tough and we are a fairly fit family. The owner arranged a taxi when we arrived which we appreciated but he wasn't always easy to get in touch with. The rental boats in the town were a firm favourite with my sons and we all loved the Argegno bistro, cafe Colombo and the pizzeria. The cable car was also worth the visit.

Owner's Response: Hi Paula Thank you for your kind comments with regard to the village of Argegno and the views from the property. I am however, surprised with some of your other comments and your very low 2 star rating. The property is freshly painted every year so I am puzzled by your 'tired decor' comment. Soft furnishings, linens etc. are replaced every year. Also I am by your comments with regard to contacting me. I count 26 emails and many phone calls including arranging the taxi to be collected from the airport and returned in time for your early morning flight. Perhaps it was the time you could not contact me when you arrived due to your network problems. I did however arrive within 3 mins of your arrival after receiving a call from the driver. As I live within a 3 minute walk from the village I was always on hand if you needed anything and was happy that during the times that we met in the village that you had no problems with the property. It is such a pity that you did not take the time then to voice any of your concerns and I would have done my utmost to ensure that you had a more pleasurable experience. Argegno is a lakeside town and the main lakeside road runs through it. As mentioned in previous emails you have a trade off, if you want to be close to the lake and its amenities you must be close to the road. Should you wish a quieter holiday you must go further into the mountains, away from the lake and all amenities. (Shops, villages, etc.) This is true for all properties are close to the lake. It is true that this public road is open for traffic 24 hours a day but traffic volumes die down in the evening, to the occasional car passing by. It picks up again in the morning and generally the double glazed windows provide enough sound insulation to deal with the occasional night- time motorists. Of course if you are particularly sensitive to traffic noise this may be a bit of an issue The walk back from the village is a bit steep (for 70 metres) at the start but once on the road it is quite pleasant and we have had many clients (including many elderly people) who enjoyed the walk. It is because of the elevated position and proximity to the lake, that the property enjoys the beautiful views that you enjoyed and if you took this away the property would not have had this breathtaking vista that you loved. I am glad that you took advantage all the tips and recommendations that I gave you and hope they helped you enjoy your time on the lake. Regards David

Myself and my family spent 10 wonderful days in this beautiful apartment in July. Although we were not very fortunate with the weather it certainly did not impede on our enjoyment of this wonderful place. We were so happy with the apartment and especially all its lovely home comforts. We loved having the TV and playstation for the children on the many rainy days that we had. It certainly kept the children entertained. There were also books and board games left for our use. We have rented many apartments over the years and honestly this was by far the best we have ever rented. The owner David was so lovely to deal with from the initial booking to meeting us on arrival and answering all our many questions. We had a thunder/lighting storm on one of our days and lost power, we called David and within in 5 mins he was at the house and had the problem sorted immediately (it was just a trip switch). It is so nice to know that if there are any problems that the owner is there on hand.

I cant wait to return to Argegno and hopefully next time we will be a little luckier with the weather:-)!!!

Owner's Response: Hi Paula It was such a pity that this Summer was not 'the best' weather wiser but I am happy that you enjoyed your time in the property. Having had young children ourselves we do know its important to have facilities during wet days and I am glad that the children made use of the games etc. I look forward to meeting you when you come back to the lake. Kindest Regards David

Wonderful Argegno

  • 5 of 5

Having spent many hours deciding on the correct holiday property to celebrate my husbands 50th Birthday we were truly blessed to have chosen this wondeful property. Without a shadow of doubt the views are out of this world and we found it very hard to drag ourselves away from the large balcony which we used at every possible moment. The property itself is beautiful and so homely with everything you could wish for and more supplied by the owners. David (owner) met us and brought us to the property on arrival and got us settled in. He spent quite a considerable amount of time with us and answered all our questions along with giving us his wonderful local knowledge of Argegno and Lake Como in general. The flat is very large and was perfect in every way for our family of 5. The 2 bedrooms are fitted with king sized beds along with a single bed in each room. The decor was magnificent our daughters loved the colourful bedroom. The front bedroom has 2 large picture windows. We cooked in several nights during our 2 week stay and the kitchen was very well equipped. We also used the bbq on a few evenings.

The charming village of Argegno is just a short walk downhill and we walked here most days leaving the car behind ( A car is not really necessary at the property). We were spoilt for choice with eating options but certainly our favourite was Da Emilio just behind the main sq. We also loved the little enoteca for aperitivo in the evenings.

We absolutely loved this little piece of heaven and cant recommend it highly enough. We cant wait to return.
