About Mike and Emma

Hola, our names are Mike and Emma. In 2002 we saw the magnificent but neglected Finca El Almendrillo and decided to buy. After two years building and refurbishment we opened for our first Summer letting and were amazed by the response !

Mike and Emma purchased this villa in 2002

Why Mike and Emma chose Loja

We were knocked out when we saw the size, secluded rural location and above all the tranquility of Finca El Almendrillo. During our first week´s stay the only sounds we heard were the song of birds and planes far far above in the clear blue sky. We knew that we could create a luxurious holiday environment. Two years building and one 17 metre (55 foot) pool later we believe we have done so.

What makes this villa unique

Many people who stay at Finca El Almendrillo never leave for their whole week or fortnight ! For them we can organise an airport taxi service, and they only need to think about whether to lie by the pool or in the shade, whether to use the huge outdoor barbecue or the designer kitchen and whether or not to have a siesta. Others find that, though rural and secluded, Almendrillo is perfectly placed for car trips to the Andalucian treasures of Sevilla, Ronda, Cordoba and Granada, not forgetting the Costa del Sol at Malaga and the Costa Tropical at Motril and La Herradura. Rental options are indeed rare which offer the combination of size and convenience (your whole extended family together in one place) luxury (the pool has been described as "Olympic") and local opportunities for holiday fun

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed at Mike's house for two weeks in June 2011. We had a large group (27 total) consisting of babies, children, adults and grandparents. Everyone felt completely comfortable, with plenty of space to hang out with each other or get away to be alone to read or rest. The main house and casita are spacious, we spent most of our time outside enjoying all the different sitting areas and views. We circulated between time at the pool - which is enormous, dinner in the courtyard with the outdoor kitchen, and in the side yard where Mike and Emma have a playhouse, hammocks, and ping pong tables. Mike found us a great baby sitter. Mike provides more than enough toys, games, books, scooters, bikes etc for all to enjoy. Ths is a perfect place, especially if you have small children or older adults. It is safe, private, and comfortable. You can tour many beautiful, interesting parts of Spain, but then come home to cook and swim and enjoy each other in an amazingly beautiful setting. Mary S,USA

Almendrillo captures the magic of rural Spain

  • 5 of 5

Where do you find a unique, private place in southern Spain for six seasoned traveller couples? From our initial research there are not that many! How very fortunate we were to find Almendrillo! This modernized, original estate home is located at the end of a twisting lane a few kilometers from excellant highways. The white stone walls and large, original wooden swing doors open to private comfortable spaces among the well kept grounds and gardens.

We were warmly welcomed by a charming knowledgeable off site, though local manager who was available should that be necessary. We also enjoyed the outstanding cuisine cooked "in house" by a most talented, congenial local couple.

The views are simple outstanding! Enjoy your morning coffee as the sun comes over distant mountains. Have lunch or afternoon cocktails gazing across the olive grove covered valleys and hills as far as the eye can see. Enjoy the stunning large pool area and recessed patios with uninterupted south facing vistas. In time , relax over dinner under the stars and the fading light of the setting sun. The well equiped kitchen and BBQ, off the enchanting courtyard, make meal preparation a most pleasant experince if so inclined.

All needs are provided. Almendrillo was spotlessly clean with comfortable beds and all amenities. The modern bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities were well used by all after our long days and hikes.

Anyone for a game of pool, ping pong, cards or just relax in the second floor TV room with an out door patio? With so many isolated spaces one could easily slip away for a quiet read, wi fi exchange or a welcome siesta.

The small local village, a short distance away is not only charming, it has a small store for general needs. There is also a lively restaurant with very good food and a most enthusiastic owner.

Our goal was to make trips to the numerous historic and cultural sites within an hour and a half or less drive. Almendrillo is ideally located to access the rich cultural history of the region. The white villages and must see cities like Cordoba, Granada and Seville as well as the south coast are spectacular day visits.

If south central Spain is is in your travel plans , and it should be, Almendrillo is a "go to" place. I know you will love it too!

Fantastic property in an amazing location

  • 5 of 5

Our party of 14 old school friends have holidayed together for a number of years and so fantastic was last year at El Almendrillo that there was a unanimous vote for a return visit, the first time this has happened. On arrival some were heard to say - "we are home"!!

Once again the lovely house and grounds exceeded our expectations

in fact we all felt it to be better than last year. Situated up high with the most amazing views all around and so many places to sit including the hammock!!!

The swimming pool is just the best!! A full size pool with really bright clean water and so well maintained. There are plenty of comfortable sun loungers and a covered area for shade. Having a poolside shower and loo was so convenient - not having to pop back to the house!

Toni and team had done a brilliant job cleaning for our arrival and the house looked great.

The two interior large and airy kitchens are well equipped with large pots and pans and everything else one might need. In addition this house has an amazing outside kitchen with hob oven and bbq, which was fantastic for cooking outside especially as the very coveted beer barrel was situated in that area.

Indeed thanks to Sian for arranging the beer kegs, various wines and water. This made it so much easier for us to plan our food shopping in the various food markets in nearby villages and the good supermarkets within a 30minute drive. We used Mercadona in Rute.

The really great thing about El Almendrillo is the variety of bedrooms and bathrooms which makes it so easy to allocate rooms to the right people in a large party. There are also loads of places where you can go and sit if you want some privacy, to read or just enjoy the views.

The house stays lovely and cool as it has really thick walls and windows that you shutter during the hot days.

Down the hill in the village you will get an excellent gin and tonic at Antonio's, good food and friendly service.

We have to mention the view from the balcony at sunset, absolutely amazing, as the sun goes down the stars start to wink into place and when completely dark the sight of the Milky Way will simply take your breath away. There is absolute darkness, all you can see are stars and the odd shooting star!

We had a brilliant week and would fully recommend this beautiful property for large groups.

Superb villa

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Almendrillo. The views over the valley from the property were simply stunning. The villa was well appointed, beautifully decorated and contained more than enough room for our group of nine. We particularly liked the choice of outdoor areas in which to relax and to dine. The pool is an excellent size also. I would 100% recommend this villa.

Lovely stay in the Finca

  • 5 of 5

The property is incredible. It is a beautifully done up old farmhouse with lots of quirky old features. The pool is huge and has a beautiful view out over the mountains. You feel completely away from the world (though is close enough to all your basic amenities, and just a short drive from the nearest village) - it is a wonderfully peaceful place. Our hosts were so helpful before and during the trip, sending advice on all sorts of issues - from where to eat and places to visit to tips on which supermarkets best catered to specific dietery requirements. We didn't want to leave this place - I don't think I've ever had a more relaxing holiday.

Perfect for large groups!

  • 5 of 5

Finca el Almendrillo is the perfect place to stay for large groups. The accommodation is extremely spacious and the kitchen and bathroom facilities are well equipped to cope with a large number of guests.

The pool is very large, and has plenty of space around it for people to spend the day relaxing. There are a lot of amazing places to sit, including a wonderful first floor terrace. All of these spaces afford a good view of the amazing landscape that lies to the south of the Finca. The view is truly awesome, and the buildings and grounds catch the light throughout the day and into the evening. In addition to the outer spaces, the Finca includes a central courtyard which is perfect for group dining. There is an adjacent BBQ area which made cooking in bulk extremely easy.

You can walk into the village of Fuente del Conde, which has a small shop for essential supplies, and a really nice bar which serves good tapas. 15 minutes drive away is the town of Iznajar which is situated high up overlooking a large lake. We spent a really good day here swimming in the lake and eating in the town afterwards. Malaga & Granada are within an hour’s drive. Other towns with large supermarkets can be visited on the way back from these places.

Mike & Emma were extremely communicative and friendly throughout the booking process. They were also very responsive when we needed to contact them during our stay. I would 100% recommend the Finca and my group fully intends to make a return visit.

Fantastic holiday

  • 5 of 5

We visited Finca in June 2017 and we had an amazing time. We were 14 adults and 6 kids. The house was amazing. All the rooms were completely different so we spent a bit of time after we arrived having a nose in all the rooms. I ended up in a beautiful room overlooking the courtyard and it had a beautiful small balcony outside.. stunning! The views from the house were breathtaking both by day and night . The pool was massive and we spent hours everyday in there with the kids. We had plenty to keep us occupied each day and visited Antonios Bar down to the road a few times. I could not recommend this house enough. It was an amazing and peaceful break away from it all! We hope to go back in the future!!
