The ground-floor Garden Apartment is perfect for solo travellers or couples. Charming, beautifully furnished & 'cottagey' in style, it is extremely cosy & comfortable, with oak flooring & rugs throughout (the bedroom is carpeted).

The accommodation comprises:

- sunny living-room - 2 reclining seats plus sofa, dining table/chairs, recess window overlooking the park to the front of the house with cosy window-seat

- kitchen - fridge, freezer, clothes washer/dryer, dishwasher, oven/hob, microwave, coffee-maker

double bedroom - double bed, full-length mirror, comfortable easy chair, wardrobe, and dressing-table & chair, bedside lamps, and with garden/park views

- fully-tiled, modern bathroom - shower over the bath/large glass shower screen, heated towel rail and shaver point.

We pay personal attention to detail and consider cleanliness of paramount importance! All three apartments have Broadband Wi-Fi access, free parking and a great DVD library for those lazy days at 'home'.

Scottish Thistle Award Winner (Visit Scotland - Scotland's Tourist Board - most prestigious awards), for: 'The Extra Mile' and Finalist for 'Customer Care'. Pilrig House is an historic Scottish townhouse (built 1638) with a wonderful literary connection to Robert Louis Stevenson - as a child, RLS often visited his uncle, David Balfour, & played in the gardens here. He mentions Pilrig House in many of his books & novels, eg Kidnapped & Catriona.

Guests will enjoy deeply comfortable, stylish & impeccable accommodation, and a lovely private garden in which to relax, a tranquil park on the doorstep - perfect for that early morning jog, & park views from all three apartments' main rooms.

Each apartment offers a FREE allocated parking space in a secure private car park to the rear of the house - this is exceptionally rare in Edinburgh and means you don't have to worry about finding a parking space and topping up meters every two hours ('on-street' parking). Each apartment also has free Wi-Fi.

Edinburgh city centre & all the main attractions are only a 15-20 min. stroll away (just over 1 mile), or 5 mins by bus (there are bus-stops within a few mins' walk of Pilrig House). The open-top Majestic hop-on, hop-off bus tour departs from a bus-stop right outside the entrance to Pilrig House Close, which means you literally step outside, walk around 30 yards, hop aboard, and you can stop at the Royal Yacht Britannia, the Georgian New Town, Edinburgh's Botanical Gardens, Holyrood Palace on the Royal Mile, the Scottish Parliament... then stroll up to Edinburgh Castle.

Waverley station is 1.2 miles away, and a taxi here would cost c. £6.50.

About Debbie Martin

Philip is from Edinburgh - a retired naval engineer, and Debbie a proofreader/copy editor who came to Edinburgh to study and never left.

We have both travelled extensively and when we set up Pilrig House Apartments our aim was, and remains, to provide guests with immaculate, fabulously equipped & extremely comfortable accommodation. Since then, we have been delighted to see the same faces return again, and again - & their friends & families! In 2016, over 65% of our guests were 'returnees'.

We enjoy meeting guests from around the world & always try to make our guests feel especially welcomed & supported throughout their stay. We can also be totally invisible! Living at Pilrig House means we are able to offer advice and help & the hand of friendship, if wanted, and, of course, are able to attend to any problems/mishaps during your stay, usually immediately.

Since start-up, we have won many awards and accolades, including Visit Scotland's (Scotland's Tourist Board) 'Tourism Oscars' - the Scottish Thistle Award for' The Extra Mile'; finalist - Customer Care award, and, in 2014, Best Holiday Accommodation. We were awarded, from thousands of entries, the Regional Winner (for the whole of Scotland South-East) for Best Holiday Accommodation for 2015/16.

As Scottish owners on site, we have worked extremely hard over the last 12 years to ensure that all our guests enjoy fully serviced vacation rentals that are better equipped than the vast majority on offer, with every facility you would want while staying here.

Why Debbie Martin chose Edinburgh

Pilrig House (built 1638) is an A-Listed historic property of note - as a 17th century townhouse located on the edge of a park, with a literary connection - it was the home of Robert Louis Stevenson's family - the Balfours, and with an incredible history all of its own - it is incredibly special - do read our own website's full history page. (The blue plaque on Pilrig House's wall denotes a house of historic significance.)

Then there's the lovely location in parkland, with views over Holyrood Park and the Edinburgh skyline, and lovely gardens in which you can utterly switch off and watch the world go by after busy days' sightseeing.

The peace is supreme - the house has a wonderful ambiance - it really is special. You can walk 5 mins from Pilrig House to the River of Leith and stroll alongside the river towards the charming 'village' of Stockbridge, or to 'The Shore' - a local area on the waterside.

Great Transport Links on our Doorstep

In addition to providing private parking, there are great bus links a couple of minutes' from the house... taking your directly into the city centre (only a few stops away and an easy 20-min walk - 1.2miles), or through the Georgian New Town past the Royal Botanical Gardens. The hop-on, hop-off bus tour drives past the entrance to Pilrig House - handy if you want an immediate 'bearings' tour. The local buses into the city centre will drop you right outside the entrance to Waverley Station, or St Andrews Square bus station OR on the Royal Mile - if seeing the Castle is first stop on your list.

There is just so much to enjoy about living here. We just couldn't replicate what Pilrig House offers if we searched the length and breadth of Edinburgh.

We awaken to birdsong, can gaze out our windows & see the park in all seasons, or sit in the garden in total privacy. We often walk down to the Port of Leith's trendy 'Shore' area on the waterfront- only a 6-minute walk from Pilrig House and a fab dining spot, boasting a wide range of great restaurants, including Martin Wishart's & The Kitchin (Michelin-star).

Everything we need is close-by - shops, transport links, restaurants, deli's, local auction house, swim and leisure centre a few mins' away with a great gym (really cheap to use and attend any classes from a wide choice), post-office, bars, you name it, it's a short stroll away.

And, there are beautiful drives to the East Lothian countryside and coastal trail, including some charming villages - within a half-hour's drive.

A Great Base for Wider Scottish Travel

Pilrig House is a wonderful base for wider travel throughout Scotland - many of our guests book Pilrig House as their home base, hire a car, and travel extensively when here - even taking flights up to the Hebridean islands - which are only a 1-hour flight from Edinburgh. Our central location makes travelling north, south, east and west a dream.

Golf Paradise

Pilrig House also attracts many golfers each year - it really is a great base if you love golf - see our own website's Golf section - it lists all the courses nearby - and the distances from other well-known Scottish courses. Our specialist driver can also take you to and from the course, if you would prefer not to drive yourself - he is a golfer himself and can even play, or walk the course with you.

If staying one week or less, we sk for 100% payment on booking. If staying in excess of 1 week, we ask for 50% payment on booking and 50% payment 8 weeks before your stay.

Booking Notes:
Payment is by credit/debit card via a secure online payment system - World Pay. Our cancellation policy is detailed in our Booking Conditions on our website. Please take a look! We confirm all bookings and payments by email.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is flexible - preferably not Sundays. Check-in is 2.30-3.30pm, unless a later time has been arranged. If earlier check-in is required, we charge £75 to ensure this (we block off the day before). Departures is by 10am latest.

We offer a 10% discount on the nightly rate for all solo travellers.

It is also wonderful for people who want to drive here, or hire a car throughout, their stay - we have a small private car park to the rear of the house with an allocated space for each apartment - in Edinburgh this is very rare! All main bedrooms and living-rooms overlook the garden and park - lovely to awaken to the sound of birdsong and not traffic noise! Just along the road is a great gym and leisure centre, which is cheap to access and is open very early in the morning - full-length swimming-pool, body conditoning classes, sauna, greatgym, steam room...
