Award-Winning 4 and 5-Star Apartments in Historic Townhouse with FREE parking - Pilrig House Park Apt (Sleeps 3 max, 2 Bedrooms)

Updated: 21-Oct-2016
Historic House Apartments in Edinburgh, Scotland - Unique, Tranquil Parkland Location, Close To Edinburgh City Centre

Pilrig House Apartments is regional winner in the 2015/16 Scottish Thistle Awards ('Scotland's Tourism Oscars') - in the category 'Best Holiday Accommodation' for the whole of 'Scotland Central South East/Tayside and Fife (Regional Finalist in 2014/15)

Scottish Thistle Award Winner (Visit Scotland - Scotland's Tourist Board - most prestigious awards), for: 'The Extra Mile' and Finalist for 'Customer Care'. Pilrig House is an historic Scottish townhouse (built 1638) with a wonderful literary connection to Robert Louis Stevenson - as a child, RLS often visited his uncle, David Balfour, & played in the gardens here. He mentions Pilrig House in many of his books & novels, eg Kidnapped & Catriona.

Guests will enjoy wonderfully comfortable, stylish & impeccably clean accommodation, and a lovely private garden in which to relax, a tranquil park on the doorstep - perfect for that early morning jog, & park views from all three apartments' main rooms.

Each apartment offers a FREE allocated parking space in a secure private car park to the rear of the house - this is exceptionally rare in Edinburgh and means you don't have to worry about finding a parking space and topping up meters every two hours ('on-street' parking). Each apartment also has free Wi-Fi.

Edinburgh city centre & all the main attractions are only a 15-20 min. stroll away (just over 1 mile), or 5 mins by bus (there are bus-stops within a few mins' walk of Pilrig House). The open-top Majestic hop-on, hop-off bus tour departs from a bus-stop right outside the entrance to Pilrig House Close, which means you literally step outside, walk around 30 yards, hop aboard, and you can stop at the Royal Yacht Britannia, the Georgian New Town, Edinburgh's Botanical Gardens, Holyrood Palace on the Royal Mile, the Scottish Parliament... then stroll up to Edinburgh Castle.

Waverley station is 1.2 miles away, and a taxi here would cost c. £7.

The apartments are managed by Philip & Debbie (the Scottish owners) - we personally welcome all our guests.

On booking, we supply guests with:

- map of our location (plus location information)

- series of 'insider' information files, to get you excited about your stay

- Booking Print-Out which has loads of useful facts about your stay at Pilrig House, and details of what's included to help with your packing

- details of our recommended driver/tour guide service - we have worked with Mike to create some really special tours for guests, which include the new 'Outlander Tour, a wildlife photography day out, with tuition from an expert at a Scottish Lochside location, a unique boat trip in the Highlands, whisky tours, and many many more featuring all the Scottish locations, castles and views you will not want to miss.

We welcome children over the age of 7. No pets. Non-Smoking.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Debbie and Philip, Our vacation to England, Wales, Scotland and France was just wonderful. We stayed in 7 different establishments, from hotels to cottages to apartments to flats. Most were OK, and one or two were just satisfactory. However, one stood out as exquisite, that was Pilrig House. Please accept our highest praise for a lovely apartment, clean, beautifully decorated, comfortable beds, wonderful park setting etc., etc. Also our thanks to both of you for your kindness and help in making our Edinburgh stay perfect. While this was our first European experience with a rental of this type, we have rented many times in the US, and Pilrig ranks tops with us. Our very best to both of you and thanks again. Warmest Regards. Carolyn and Jim Eitel

See our website for links to all other independent, unsolicited reviews on other major holiday/travel sites - out of in excess of 300 reviews, all but two have awarded us 5 stars (the other two awarded us 4 stars).

From the Owner

Well - there's the fact the Pilrig House is utterly unique as an historic 17th-century Scottish townhouse in Edinburgh - with its incredible history! Then there's the lovely location, and the parkland and Edinburgh skyline views... And the peace is supreme! Then, there's the wonderful ambiance in the house itself - it really is special. And, the private parking, the beautiful gardens... there is so much to enjoy about living here. We just couldn't replicate what Pilrig House offers if we searched the length and breadth of Edinburgh. And the fact that we can walk into the centre of Edinburgh in 15-20 mins, or take a bus mins' walk through the park... more than anything, we love the feeling of living in the country, with nature on our doorstep, while living so close to the city centre.

Special interest holidays:

Whisky lovers - we are delighted to offer exclusive membership of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. This entitles 4 adults to drink & dine in either of the Society's establishments in Edinburgh - the historic 'Vaults' in nearby Leith, or in the beautiful Georgian townhouse Queen Street premises in the centre of Edinburgh. Here you can sample the finest single-casked, single malts to be found anywhere in the world - specially casked for the Society! You can also attend exclusive tastings or events that may be on during your stay.

And, if you are attending a cookery course at Michelin-star rated Martin Wishart's Cookery School, you could not hope to be located any nearer - Pilrig House is located 5 mins 'up the road'!

If you're an antiquarian book or antiques lover - Edinburgh is awash in antiques/antiquarian books & charity shops! A local antiques auction is held nearby each Saturday. And, the incredible 'Georgian Antiques' is not far from Pilrig House Apartments.

See our own website if you interested in tracing your family tree for genealogy links to help you research your Scottish descendants.

There are many delightful sandy beaches & lovely villages along the East Lothian coastline (known also as 'golf-course country- with almost 40 courses to choose from!) - only a 30-min drive away.

A car hire is handy for reaching places outwith Edinburgh, but not necessary - we have a tour pack in each apartment, and, on booking, we provide guests with details of our wonderful personal tour guide/driver - he can offer a 'Meet & Greet' at the airport, act as your personal driver/tour guide, has specialist knowledge of whisky distilleries & is also a golf expert! And, he is great fun. To date, every guest that has prebooked Mike''s service, has mentioned his tour as a highlight of their trip - he can access the really scenic smaller roads, not accessible to tour buses - a great advantage!

Edinburgh Airport is 9.2 miles from Pilrig House. On booking, we provide you with our personal driver service details so that you can book a 'Meet & Greet' to bring you here directly and, get assistance with carrying your luggage.

Glasgow Airport is c. 35 miles away & a city link bus will bring you to Edin city centre, or book our personal driver service (at a set rate) to bring you directly.

Edinburgh's Waverley Station is just off Princes Street (1.2 miles) - c. £7 to get here by cab.

Pilrig House is just over a mile from Edinburgh city centre and all the main attractions - you can walk in around 20 mins, & there are regular buses under a 5-min walk away from Pilrig House. Our location is also only a half-mile from the port of Leith - a trendy dining spot with Edinburgh residents. It boasts 3 Michelin-star restaurants: The Kitchin, Martin Wisharts at The Shore, The Plumed Horse; as well as great bistro-style & pub eateries on the waterfront. The Royal Yacht Britannia is also berthed here.

Edinburgh Botanical Gardens are a 15-minute walk away.

Further Details:

Edinburgh is a fantastic central location in which to be based for your trip to Scotland - so many places can be easily accessed from here - for example, you can drive to Glencoe in the Highlands in around 2 hours; or take off for Loch Lomond and be there in around an hour-and-a-half. You may want a tour of The Isle of Skye, Melrose, Loch Ness, Scone Palace, the Scottish Borders, Whisky Distilleries, OUTLANDER LOCATIONS - many nearby!!

Edinburgh is 35 miles from Glasgow - trains depart every 15 minutes from Edinburgh's Waverley train station. It is also near to the East Lothian coastal trail - a lovely drive taking in many picturesque villages, beaches, ca (and golf-courses), eg North Berwick, Gullane, Gifford, Dirleton & Dirleton Castle, Tantallon Castle. You may want to walk all, or part of, The John Muir Way, starting in Dunbar.

Lindisfarne & Holy Isle, Bamburgh Castle, and, a little further on - 'Alnwick Castle' (featured as 'Hogwarts' in the Harry Potter films) are around 90 mins' drive away.

Rosslyn Chapel can be reached by car in around 35 minutes, or there are buses directly to the village of Rosslyn.

Guests may wish to visit the Borders, eg Melrose (visit 'Abbotsford' - home of Sir Walter Scott), Floors Castle, St Andrews, Stirling Castle & The Wallace Monument, Linlithgow Palace, Perth - all are all around an hour's drive away, or can be directly accessed by train.

Pilrig House is within a 5-10 min walk of shops, supermarkets, leisure centre, auction-house, bank, post-office, cinema, restaurants, deli, cook school, Leith Woollen Mill & Clan Tartan Centre, the Water of Leith Walkways & Cycle Paths, the Playhouse Theatre.

And, best of all - we do have a private car park with free parking. Many ads that state 'parking' fail to mention this is 'on-street parking' which means there is no guarantee you will get a space, and if you do, you will need to continually top up parking meters all day!

The Peaceful Setting All of the above! We awaken to birdsong, can gaze out our windows & see the park in all seasons, or sit in the garden to the side of the house in total privacy and enjoy the tranquillity. We often walk down to the Port of Leith - only a 6-minute walk from Pilrig House and now a trendy dining spot, where there are great restaurants, including Martin Wishart's, The Plumed Horse & The Kitchin (all Michelin-star) right on the waterfront. Everything we need is close-by - shops, transport links, restaurants (2 within mins), Edinburgh's main train station... and, there are beautiful drives to the East Lothian countryside and coastal trail, including some charming villages - within a half-hour's drive. A Great Base for Wider Scottish Travel Pilrig House is a wonderful base for wider travel throughout Scotland - many of our guests book Pilrig House as their home base, hire a car, and travel extensively when here - even taking flights up to the Hebridean islands - which are only a 1-hour flight from Edinburgh. Our central location makes travelling north, south, east and west a dream. Golf Paradise Pilrig House also attracts many golfers each year - it really is a great base if you love golf - see our own website's Golf section - it lists all the courses nearby - and the distances from other well-known Scottish courses. Our specialist driver can also take you to and from the course, if you would prefer not to drive yourself - he is a golfer himself and can even play, or walk the course with you. Free Private Parking Best of all is being able to offer our guests free private parking - very rare - and usually costly - in Edinburgh!
